View Full Version : What kind of forums do we want this to be?

I seen this before, good forums with lots of cool discussions get bogged down with "social butterflies" using every chance to snipe at anyone or anything they don't like. Drowning out any interesting points in lame jokes or just endless repeats.
Using the very good news that the walking dead is nominated for an award to take a pot shot at Georg Romero. Wtf? Don't you think that Romero like the walking dead and wish them all the best?
Also intervening in threads with jokes about things said in other threads to make thing said there look silly, instead of... You know having an actual argument for why its silly and post it in the original thread.
Its like the people in question just act like jerks so they don't have to do any actual debating.
Its cheap social tactics to "dominate" the opinions on the board.
I have been gone for a while so when I got back it was very noticeable.
I am not mentioning names but lets all make an effort to be on topic, supportive of the walking dead, and factual.
And let me just save you the trouble of saying:"if you dont like it you can just leave" I'm not going to leave :p .

Discussing the same zombie-related material over and over again becomes very repetitive when there are very few new things to add. Jokes break the monotony. Every other site is the same.

Wrong forum, btw....

Oh, you've met DubiousComforts have you? :D

Every board is going to have their good Granny Smith apples and their yucky apples. I think we're fortunate here in having far more good apples than yucky apples. And the yucky apples can sometimes prove to get a conversation going actually and bring some unique opinions around here to keep things going.

Overall, I only post on this forum and one other forum (a forum about generations/generational differneces) actually. I haven't found any other forum on the internet that has such a tight community with some overall wonderful people as I have here at HPotD. I really mean that.

And it's a frakkin' message board! Stop taking stuff so seriously... we're all here for the same reasons I would hope, to hopefully have some fun to take us away from the mundane regular day-to-day existence we live by talking about things we have mutual interests in as the awesome people we are -- great horror films, interesting articles, interesting things in life. And oh yeah, zombies.

Anyway, for the most part, I think most of the folks here at HPotD are just super people. Trencher, me thinks you need some Christmas cheer -- so here is a Merry Christmas from me and Michael Ironside:

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/3520/ironside4ed.jpg

EDIT: This is post # 1,000 for me! Hooray! Ironic that my 1,000th post would be about the awesomeness of this board, eh? Here's my lifting my breakfast barbecue pork rinds to another 1,000 posts! I only have 4,000 more until I get a special logo and all that jazz, I figure I can make it in the next decade if I'm lucky!

I agree with you, Lee, I get a huge kick out of him. I think he makes things far more entertaining around here as well in addition to being highly intelligent. But, the three of us (you, me, Dubs, along with Gary and a few other folks here) can certainly be taken somewhat out of context sometimes and others can take us to be somewhat of an ass (even though that's not our intention). That's all I'm pointing out. Of course, it's hard to be as awesome as we are all the time so naturally others would feel some extreme jealousy regarding that.

I want them to be the forums they are right now, and frankly things ebb and flow over time. I have been around through several version of forum software and seen many "regular faces" come and go... and you know what? The forums are always strong .There are lulls in the "action" we lose things to talk about, cover the same ground a bit too often perhaps... but that is the way of it. I like the forums just fine and if it gets too personal or too much of a flame fest people step up and put them out.

Life moves on, the forums stay basically the same. I am just glad we have them.

There are far worse places than this my friends!

I find that most people here are pretty okay, the measure of decent folks/forums for me is if I can have a bit of a ruck with somebody about one subject, but have a laugh with them on another...basically, people who don't take this stuff (and themselves) too seriously.

I understand what the OP is looking for, but dude you won't find that anywhere on the interwebz... Basically forums are a place to be a complete and total ass if you want to be as well as an articulated observer who has something meaningful and worthy to contribute. I used to post at a forum for wrestling video game coverage when I was REALLY young called "Soxx's Wrestling Coverage." In fact, I was looking at the old look of the forum yesterday on the internet archive site. (It was taken down in 2007, long after I left, and its members scattered.) There will never be another message board quite like SWC. However, being so young at the time (I don't even think I was in my teens yet) it'll be hard to match that anywhere else for me.

But anyway, my point is, if you think there's a lot of arguing and bullshit HERE, you should've seen that place. I got into daily debates on why I thought Rap as a whole sucks. (And I still do, although I have since discovered Hip Hop and love the majority of it I've heard.) People there were being douchebags for the sake of being douchebags, but it was all in good fun, no harm was meant from it.

I also posted at a metal forum, Metal-Rules. Now THATS a group of assholes. They're even worse than most metal-heads are, they're as snobby and condescending as crusty punk kids talking down on hippies. (Yea, a group of people called 'Crusty Punk Kids' actually try to act condescending. And they're generally some of the worst filth I've ever met.)

The only thing I think this forum needs is a bit more traffic. And I'm surprised it doesn't have way more traffic, because I can't personally find ANY other forums dedicated to zombies.

word. i don't post on this forum much anymore and i'll make no secret of why: many of you are incapable of discussing anything over the 2d grade level.

jokes have their place, without a doubt, but that place is not 4 or 5 posts into a thread where someone is trying to start what could be an interesting, relatively serious discussion. that is nothing but bullshit and a completely childish attempt at attention - the class clown syndrome - "i don't have anything relevant to say, so i'll try to show how funny i am". it is mildly cute in elementary school but fucking shocking when it is repetitive behavior from an adult.

most of the god damn memes and pics add zero to the discussion and are nothing more than a completely juvenile attempt at derailing threads in an effort to look "funny."

now i patiently wait for some fuckwit (yes, you are a fuckwit if you fall for it) to come along and post the inevitably puerile pic.

if that is the kind of board you guys want, then fine by me. like i said before, jokes and funny pics have their place. that place shouldn't be derailing 90% of the threads because certain posters want to act that this an internet romper room. a lot of what has gone on here recently is asinine.

rational complaints are never asinine. people probably complain because they enjoy (or enjoyed) coming here and don't care for what has been going down lately. laughs are good but sometimes, it is simply too much or taken too far. things are funny once or twice but rapidly move into the territory of the juvenile when done over and over and over again.

if you want to try to show how funny you are use the shoutbox.

It is asinine when you consider it won't change a thing. If you don't like it, stop visiting. If you would like to still visit and don't want anything humorous in your threads, ask a mod to delete it. They will generally delete the post or the entire thread if the creator asks them to.

Complaining about things not going your way is just like crying for attention. Might as well roll out the soap box...

Mike, if you want a serious topic without jokes, create one and say explicitly in your first post that you dont want it derailed. Then if it is derailed and mod spots it, the offending posts will be removed. I did put that in the FAQ along time ago too.

I think there needs to be a lot more Paxil and Prozac prescribed to people in this thread! (just to be clear, so no one interprets that wrong, that was a joke)

It's an internet message board. Things get weird sometimes, and it will go through phases of strangeness, intenseness, etc. It happens, and it doesn't stay that way forever, so just step back (I didn't say "leave" - lets not go there) 'till there's a good opportunity to jump back in. It's not really that hard. Shit man, I left HPotD for over a year because I was annoyed at what was going on - but, I took a step back, collected myself, and returned at a later time when things settled down.

The REAL problem with ALL forums are the know-it-alls, people with no tact/common courtesy or conversation skills that interrupt threads with such stupidity that it can't help but derail everything. If people post pics and it gets on your nerves - ignore them, it's a nice little feature this board has. I, myself, have purposely created threads in the lounge (the "bacon" and "lou's gallery of weirdness" threads) for pics only, and have tried to keep them all there. I like posting pics and memes, but I don't want to piss all over other people's threads doing so (unless it's relevant to the conversation), hence, why I created those threads to let people just go nuts with them and keep them out of other threads. I realized I myself was getting a bit out of hand with it, so I reigned it in and relegated it (mostly) to those two threads.

Discussions are great, sometimes intense - but that's part of the fun. However, busting into a thread like you know everything and everyone else doesn't know shit - yeah, that's annoying as all hell and something I wish would go away on ALL forums (again, not just this one). ;)

I'll be honest - the only issue I have here at HPotD is you fuckers don't post enough. I sit here at work, check the board at 9am, post... come back 3 hours later and there's like 2 new posts. Don't make me start another "I have shamed myself" thread to get you bozos talkin'! ;) :D

Again, I got you back Bass.

And that's a good point. People don't want smiley/jokey stuff in their threads shouldn't bring up the same or similar topics up for the umpteenth time. It bores alot of us to tears because those things have been discussed ad nauseum. So some of us like to lighten things up a little bit to break up the monotony.

Or here's an idea. The igore button!! Just ignore the usual suspcts and that won't be a problem anymore. I haven't heard anything DB and leo have had to say for like a year now and my life is better for it. Hey some people like their posts and they can read them just as easily.

But yeah Bass, all this complaining lately is just as if not exponentially more annoying than a facepalm pic. See there are tons of things to complain about here it's just that most of us ddon't complain about it every other thread.

What's more childish? Making jokes or complaining about the same thing over and over?

And Bass didn't tell anyone to leave. He merely informed those who have a problem with the way things are going around here that leaing is always an option in case they have forgotten.

All things considered Me thinks this place is just fine. Don't know what all the fuss is about. As a matter of fact I can't remember this place NOT being like this. Adreno posting pics of heidi as a bear in the middle of a thread for example. Great classic stuff. There used to be nothing but jokers around here.

In short the only thing that is new are the complaints about it.

Oh it's by my own choice for sure. It's just that the only reason I came back in the first place after a lengthy absence was to have a few laughs with my friends here. It was never my intention to annoy anyone or ruin anyone elses enjoyment of the forums.

Honestly, it's a good thing. I don't really feel like I have anything worthwile to contribute at this point, & all of the enjoyment has gone out of posting for me anyway. Plus I've been spending all the time I spent on here on more productive activities.

Second. Wouldn't be the same without Moon...

Waitagoddamnminutenow!!!!! What the fuck is going on?!?!? What is this shit?!??! THIS is why I don't post very often any more.. . . .All the people that I like on here can't fucking let things be and just get along!!! Who has told you to quit posting Moon??!?! And Mike. . I love you buddy. . but what the hell man??!?! When did having a laugh start getting on your nerves? You used to get silly with the rest of us. And then when it was time for a serious talk. . well we would all have that too. I don't know guys. I just used to have a lot of fun on these boards. . .and then. . . well it looks like the fun is being sucked from them. Look at the year end awards for this year and compare them to last year. . . .you will see a large group of people that used to get along last year. . and this year you will see a 2 page argument. Why can't we all just get along?

Nobody forces anybody to do anything you can only do what you choose to. It's as simple and as complicated as that. I agree with the sentiment about far to much tangential derailment, but also agree with bassmans comment about how some would like nothing but one long circle jerk about how they want a zombie apocalypse to happen to finally get back at a real world that spurns them when they go down to wallmart and ride the complimentary rascal. Its all swings and roundabouts. each threads is different. that is the point of a forum. if one is not to your tastes, stop reading it and read another or make your own. thats what the new topic buttons there for. Dont like people derailing, say something. i rarely do but at least once ive said to dj and thxleo during one of there "biggerman-offs" to just drop it before they get the thread closed and as if compelled by some eldritch power they both did. saying nothing and getting pissy that others can know what your opinion is without you taking part and inputing it in the dialogue is an exercise in futility.

-and lest be frank here, i'm the fuckin' clown here. Don't let nobody tell you any different. so now i step back from my rare attempt at sage wisdom and end with a usless, utterly foolish and good natured picture.

Our forums are fine, there is no need for anyone to "leave" there is no cause to over react, we do not need to be heavy handed. Again I say these forums have been around LONG before a lot of people here and will be through the grace of God and Neil be around LONG after many of us go. That said I would be damned if I was ever forced out by anyone... from anywhere.

These are your forums too Moon even if you do not use my old school Signature file anymore... you belong here. Period.

More than one. There were a few different complaints. It's all good. I just really don't feel it would be in anybody's best interests, (my own included), to continue participating. Thanks.

Oh it's by my own choice for sure. It's just that the only reason I came back in the first place after a lengthy absence was to have a few laughs with my friends here. It was never my intention to annoy anyone or ruin anyone elses enjoyment of the forums.

Moon -

First off, do NOT stop posting regardless of ANYONE'S opinions. Guess what? Most people probably think i'm a complete moron, but that doesn't stop me. While I respect others opinions, that doesn't mean I agree with them, and I'll be damned if a small handful of people who don't like my posting habits out of hundreds is going to make me change.

I am just as guilty as anyone else of posting goofy pictures and memes, and every time someone says "I hate that shit!" I know who it's directed at - usually you and me. We're the resident picture/meme posters (along with a few other crazies... *cough*hellsing*cough*). I'm not going to stop posting, I just said "screw it" and started my own threads (bacon/gallery of weirdness) so we could go nuts in there and the people who don't want to see it can stay away. I may have "adjusted" my posting, but I sure as shit am not going to let a few complainers make me stop completely. That already happened once when I took my first year-long absence from HPotD. Now I have a different attitude - if you don't like what I'm posting, don't read it. There's plenty of functions on this board ("ignore" being one of them) so the people who don't want to read our humorous/goofy shit don't have to.

Bottom line is, don't stop posting because a small handfull of people say they don't like what's being posted. Guess what? I don't give a rats ass. Remember, complainers are the ones you always hear from, the people who really enjoy what you're doing won't be as vocal (aside from me, your posts are always hilarious to me). If a mod told me to tone it down, that's a different story - it's their universe we're playing in, and it's their rules. I respect that, but that's as far as it goes.

Honestly, it's a good thing. I don't really feel like I have anything worthwile to contribute at this point, & all of the enjoyment has gone out of posting for me anyway.

I'm here to tell you you're wrong. *I* enjoy your posts, and *I* feel they are valid contributions, even the crazy pics. Who cares what a few complainers think? It's not like we can talk about the same zombie shit over and over and over again and not get bored. People like you and I break up the monotony, and that's SORELY needed when forums like this run out of steam between zombie projects.

Don't stop posting, Moon. If you do, I'll have to post twice as many pictures, then we're all in deep shit.

So are we saying that after all those times... that's NOT what she said!?!?

I like the serious debate. And I like topics to stay on topic. I also like it to be fun, funny, and entertaining. I've rarely found the levity in a topic keeps the topic from being explored by those who want to dig in deeply.

There has been an unusual amount of sniping going on lately. I think it stems from The Walking Dead providing a lot of new zombie content to discuss, along with putting an unflattering spotlight on GAR's recent work. It's been very polarizing and some of the ensuing discussion got way out of hand.

The quality of the forums is not a numbers game. More members does not equal better forums. If someone is irritated at the content wish them well and let them leave. While I hate to see any good contributing member leave it's better than having them stay and be irritated and post negatively. It really only takes one negative, inflammatory post to derail a thread. And only a few derailing posts from a particular person to label that person a troll. With luck some time away will allow that poster to come back as a good contributor again.

And, no, that paragraph is not targeted at Moon. Moon has always been a class act, providing both good discussion and great sidebar levity.

Couldn't agree more.

No reason for people to fly off the handle, bring real life drama here or otherwise act all brokedick. It's the internet of course, so we will all do one or more of the three at some point or another given a long enough timeline, but let's just remember we should be coming here to enjoy ourselves and one another and when one cannot do that, well, it may be time to step away from the computer for a little bit or change things up by using the ignore feature etc.

Moon, don't be an in-forum dropout :p But if you need a vacay from here, I completely understand.

LMAO @ Mo's GIF.

After laughing at the post for about 5 mins, I noticed he actually shits into the water and laughed another 10 mins. I'm still freaking wiping tears from my eyes. LOL Thanks for making my day brighter after working a exhausting 12 hr shift. We shall call this a shitting cannon ball!

After reviewing this thread a few times and drinking several of beers I've come to my conclusion.

I don't mind the board the way it is because I get lots of laughs  and a few decent conversations going but it just annoys me to no end when some dumb"asses" pop their heads in and shit all over everything plus can't bring a damn decent argument to their side of the story and refuse to leave it alone.

NOTE: Bullshit staticistics/facts do not count for shit. :deadhorse:

This sucks... I just found out from Lou tonight that Moon buggered off? That fucking sucks.

You know we all have our own levels of douchebaggery, and we all find entertaining things here and there on the boards, but seriously did this thread have to get made? and why is it in the wrong friggin' forum.

We lost a great member because a few people thought the pics were a touch much???? Oh come the fuck on, that is what message boards are like now a days. It is meant to be a place to have fun, laughs and communicate with your internet friends from around the world.

Seriously, we are in a zombie lull right now, at least until March 8th or whenever the next shitty Romero movie comes out... so why not have a little fun. I am sure a zombie apocalypse thread will be started sooner or later that we can all jump in and play out our own little fantasies of how awesome we will be when the glorious day, the dead start -Rah-hising from the grayyyyy-ve (nod to NOTLD: TPS right there, yup) begins to happen.

Seriously people chill. Yes it is a zombie forum, but the whole point was that all of us love zombie films and we like each others company and enjoy talking serious stuff along with having fun... if you take the fun out of it, what is the fucking point in visiting the forums? And who says at age 40 I have to be an adult? Shit, I am lucky I to act like a 20 something most times.... Come on people... lighten up and lets get Moon back in this mutherfucker and go back to singing Kooom BIIIIII YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa

Thats shit. :( Moon is a good lad (I have no problem with Mike for the record, everybody is entitled to an opinion). Nobody needs to be leaving anywhere as far as I am concerned.

M-O-O-N spells "get your arse back here Moonsylver".
