View Full Version : I have lost all faith in the Academy...

I was just watching the OSCARS, and after seeing just about every film on the list I would not have given George Clooney an Oscar for best supporting actor. Too many others on that list were more deserving.

I don't hate the man, I even go out of my way to catch his films. I even think he is a good actor, but he is NO Paul Giamatti, or Matt Dillion. Their performances outshined his by a long shot.

That is why I never watch the Academy Awards...its not about showmanship anymore, its about politics...its a worthless award.

Though I am glad they picked Hoffman as best actor. He was long due.

Give props tp the academy, Broke Back lost!!! Crash a good (didn't think it was oscar good) film that wasn't hyped with a holywood agenda won.

At least Crash got "best picture" -
I'm sure Borkeback Mountain is a good film, but all the damned, useless "controversy" steers me away from it until all the "talk" dies down. Didn't Utah ban the thing from theaters?
Anyhoooo, Crash is an excellent "thinkers" flick.

I was flipping stations back and forth between nothing and nothing last night and everytime I stopped on the Awards there was some sort of political joke being uttered.

Apparently the Christian school, which one of the actresses in Brokeback went to, disowned her and blasted her for being in the film - all because of the gay thing *geez*

Some people just need to be neutered...preferably in a painful manner.

Christian schools, man....they creep me out. *picks nose*

You'd think humans would have mentally evolved a little more than they have by now.....Hell, I saw an news article last week where a group of simple minded, Neo-Nazis were marching somewhere here in America - claiming no-one but them had a right to blah blah blah. So, let me get this straight,... a bunch of young, white pasty males are the only ones that have a right to live in America? Now, THAT sounds faggy! (and their "women" look like they could single handedly rebuild a diesel engine)

Oh, but back to the schools thing - funny thing is,... the old, crotchety men that decided to "disown her" are more than likely the same old farts that molest young boys in the restroom. And the women that voted her out probably rebuild diesel engines.

this is supprising how? **** the only reason the school is doing this, would be for the free publicity. while i don't doubt that they dislike the material of her film, the whole "disowning" her angle is purely done to get press and in turn thier school's name published. i'd be will to bet just orior to the "disonment" press release coming out, the school's tuition rate went up by 3-5%.

although the school, will veihimently deny any corolation between these facts.

sorry but of late there is no such thing as morality, it's just and angle to be worked in order to make some extra green.

Never really bother with any of the big award shows... I haven't got around to seeing any of the films who where up for the Best Picture. Bar Crash, none of them really interest me and even Crash doesn't interest me that much.

And in which case, that's f'ed up. But it is a Christian school afterall, a normal comprehensive mainstream place wouldn't dream of using bad press to raise attendence...but mind you, gay bashing in the name of Christianity goes down well (or at least better) with Christians than gay bashing would in the land of comprehensive education.

Some people are just destined to be retarded and drag down the human race...

true, and a great point. however it is important to point out, these people don't speak for the group at large. on the whole most christians, are ok people. it's just the uber christains that are the loud mouthed asshats we hear about so often. and honestly they're so loud mouthed because they have the most to hide.

the one truely wondeful thing about these asshats is their numbers ARE dwindling. Groups like the Fred Phelps all-star scum **** brigade, are now staffed almost completely by close family members, where as 10-20 years ago they would have had at least a moderate following.

another example of tis is while the number of vocally radical fringe groups has seemingly gone up, in fact the membership numbers of these groups are relatively small. indicating an over all decline in the number of rampant pro-god ****wipes out there.

Ardenochrome, do you listen to yourself talk? Being gay does not put someone higher on the evolutionary scale. People have the right to not support gays. Christians are not child molesters, chatolic preist are the ones under fire for it.(whens the last time you heard an acusation?) I am christian, I am not catholic, and your lumoing of all christians into the child molestation really ****es me off.

Chill out....whenever there is some sort of controversy, 80% of the time, Christians are behind it and making a big deal out of something that is or should be seen as "normal"...if I offended you, I apologize.

I lost hope in ALL awards events a long while ago. The grammy awards, oscars, everything. It's all a joke. A publicity stunt. An award is nothing, because they have awards shows for everything, and in that, awards for everything. It's no longer a high honor. It's a joke.

Evolved? Being gay is on a higher level?

Don't lump the small number of priests that abuse children into christianity. I am not catholic, I am christian. I see nothing wrong with a religion renforcing it beliefs in a peaceful way. when christians start wearing suicide belts into gay night clubs we can talk.

I never said being gay anything else is "on a higer level". I just think people are spending too much time whining and b*tching about other peoples' business. Christians are all about "Forgiving" but they (most) sure do like to condemn. just MHO

There was an interesting (aka terrifying) programme on Channel 4 here in the UK last night - it's called "Dispatches" and focusses on political issues. The past couple of weeks it has looked at terrorism & government spin, ID cards & the erosion of the right to privacy and last night is was about Christian fundamentalism.

They now have that "virgin ring" thing like you guys have in America, a bunch of teenagers pushed into a group by their parents where they pledge to not bone until they're married - statistics show (and here's the kicker) around 88% FAIL to keep the promise.

And when they fail, they're told to take that damn ring off for they have shamed themselves and broken the pact. Disgusting thing is - they're not told about contraception - AT ALL - so when they do bone, they'll do it unprotected - and what are the chances of the partner being another one of these chastity-ravers? It's all rather silly and counter-productive.

Contraception is a lot better than going commando, you friggin stupid evangelicals!

Also, they told the tale of these three northern schools - state schools - which means if you live in the 'catchment area' you have no choice but to send your kid to that school. Anyway, these schools are all Christian schools - some rich bastard (who's a, yes you guessed it, religious nutter) paid for 10% of the schools, and somehow he gets a say in how the school should be run. 90% was footed by the tax payer and the government after all - AND the parents HAVE to send their kids there, even if it's a Muslim kid!!!

Anyway, one of the many disgusting forms of behaviour was as follows:

Under no circumstances were kids allowed to leave class during lesson time (to combat truants apparently, these are uber-strict schools) - so there were many cases of kids utterly bursting for the toilet, but being refused a toilet break. Other kids were feeling unwell and again were not allowed to leave - they ended up throwing up in the class bin. But here's the really nasty case (which are plural, not just the one time)...

Girls, who are going through their period, are also not allowed to leave class to attend to their business downstairs - changing sanitary towels or popping one down there for the first time that month. So...what happened? A bunch of girls humiliated in front of their teacher (whom they're supposed to trust) and their peers because they have blood-soaked underwear (I don't know too much about this sort of thing, but apparently 'at the beginning' of a 'career in periods' for females, a young girl's 'flows' (or whatever you wanna call it) can be fairly harsh. How did the teachers (that cared enough to 'do something') deal with it?

Hand the girl in question a wad of tissues to mop herself up with - IN THE CLASSROOM - IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY.

And religion is supposed to preach tolerance and acceptance and make you feel good???

That "Dispatches" had many more moments that just shows how unflexible and unnecessary fundamentals are, and why exactly we should be worried about them. And who allowed these 7,000-ish religious nutjob schools to go ahead? That's right, Labour's very own bastard - Tony "God will judge me on Iraq" Blair...

It seems he's gone completely off the deepend diving board and is now jibber-jabbering about God - for the first time since 1997 he's now acting like Bush in terms of saying God will judge him and so on...and that reminds of "The Last Word" (a panel discussion on one of Channel 4's digital channels), where one very intelligent lady noted - 'where does this put athiests?' - damn straight. I'm an Athiest, and yet here's Blair chumming up with his God and religious schools.

At worst it should be no more than a secular vibe like in France, it's weak-willed Christianity (Britain's religion of choice shall we say - it's a "Christian country" ... apparently) in schools, nothing more than that should ever be enforced. I thought we were supposed to be teaching kids to be open minded and view all things equally - if you want your kid to learn about and love Jesus, then do it on your own family time - education should be a level playing field for all - and that includes Athiests damnit!

Thankfully by the time I reached High School, prayer in assembly was on it's way out, we had a year of that and then it was shoved - good - I'd just stand there and see if my shoes were clean, or see what time it was...

And then there's the Muslim treatement of women...*geez*

yes, the majority ARE homophobic. My best friend is gay and has been out of "the closet" for the entire 25 years I've known him (at least, among his friends and family). About 5 years ago he belonged to a church where he "kept his secret" because he knew what they'd do. Sure enough, as soon as he felt that he needed to share his lifestyle with members of this Church they all but dragged him out and burned him at the stake. He received annonymous hate email, threats and phonecalls for weeks afterward. These people preached "peace, love and forgiveness for all humans" - until one of their congregation admitted to being gay, then they became slobbering beasts with a taste for blood.

Has anyone here seen Brokeback Mountain?

I just don't see any interest in it whatsoever. I could care less if there are 2 gay cowboys in it, whether they were gay or straight still isn't going to get me to rent the film. I just don't get into romantic coming of age dramas.

Give me the action driven, blow **** up flicks anyday of the week.

However, action movies as of late are starting to suck.

Since I haven't been to a Movie theater since KING KONG was released can anyone reccomend anything?

I almost never go to the theatre. The last time I was at one was for Land Of The Dead. Before that it was Dawn 04. haha! I just don't feel movies are worth the $9 ticket price these days. Plus you have to deal with the annoying kid behind you that kicks your set the whole time and his dad that chews on popcorn/ice with his mouth open and that girl in the front of the theatre that won't shut up and so on and so forth.
