I have always wanted to visit the gulf or east coast when a Hurricane is approaching - it has GOT to be a huge rush!!! I'm a weather nut and have been known to stop the car in the middle of Kansas or Oaklahoma (in the middle of nowhere) and watch a funnel form - It's like dancing with God.

another funny thing about approching hurricanes, if you watch the weather on the news (and it's always on during a hurricane) you can see the real time updates of the shower line, getting closer and closer to where you're at, and then suddenly the sky opens up and just starts pounding down rain, damn weird.

It sounds really awsome! I might try and make a Hurricane run this summer - I've been meaning to for years.

Dude...Its not as fun as you might think it is. I cover hurricanes in the news for a living and I have been through many. I can tell you from a first hand point of view, that everyone thinks it sounds fun and cool, and I guess, the first time anyway, it kind of is, but it is way too dangerous for people to go running to the coast just to sit through a hurricane. Its stupid. That's how folks get killed. If you know for sure its only probably going to be a tropical storm, then that can be cool, but after having sat through a CAT 4 in the middle of the night while the roof got ripped off my hotel, and especially after being stuck down there for days on end without running water or air conditioning or power of any kind I can honestly tell you its not fun for me anymore.

But....far be it for me to ruin all your fun...if you still want to go sit through one go for it! Just remember that when the thing is on top of you and the winds start ripping things apart and you can hear, through the howling wind, the sound of trees hitting the ground all around you...that no one will be able to come to your rescue and save you until long after its over and there is no where to run...its kind of a humbling experience.

understood, my friend.

I have chased tornadoes for years ( I know that's not as powerful as a Hurricane) and have been in some VERY hairy situations. I don't do it for "fun". It's, to me, comparable to skydiving, only I call it ground diving, because that's what you end up doing. :D
It's the power of Nature that draws me to this; more convincing than the concept of "God". I do it because it's very spiritual to me.

It is indeed a spiritual experience for me as well. The first several times I covered a hurricane I was in awe at the power and beauty of nature. I don't disagree with you going down to check one out, but I was only expressing that maybe the first one you go see is a powerful tropical storm as opposed to a CAT 3 or 4. That way you can be out and about in it and still enjoy it. Its kind of fun to try and stand in the wind when it between 45 and 80 mph gusts, but anything after that actually hurts like hell, especiall when there's alot of sand in the wind.

If you do go check one out this summer, just don't forget to take a really good hurricane kit with you.
Peace!

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely take it.
