this is a twisted movie. the movies main focus is on the killer with little caracter development and a lot of gaps in the story, but it is a good caracter study of a deranged serial killer.
and tom savini did the effects for this movie and was an acter in a small part;)

"Maniac" is a great flick, one of the classics of the Video Nasty period. A lot of films in that period were just hacked out cash-ins (*cough* Drive-In Massacre - aka HUGE SUCK FEST *cough*). But "Maniac" really delivers the goods, it's a must-check-out for everybody into the slasher genre, go see it people!

Small part with a big bang!

From Tom Savini's make-up video release of movies he did, I recall that he was in the driver's seat of a car and someone, maybe the maniac, jumped up on the hood and blasted a shotgun through the windshield, blowing poor Tom's head off. Is this correct?

A grindhouse film that really delivers the goods. Joe Spinell is the antithesis of a Hollywood hunk. Too many times does the killer turn out to be the prep with the izod sweater. It walks a fine line between stark reality and the supernatural. The scariest thing about the character is that he can turn on the act and fool society. Most psychopath flicks simply portray a blatant nutjob. This creep might end up at your dinner table!

That is indeed correct, and it's a glorious effect

I was very dissapointed when i saw this film. I bought it because I had heard so much about the great Savini effects. I thought that the post-production was cheap, the story was not innovative, the acting was only OK, and the effects were much less than spectacular. Dont get me wrong, I love Savini effects, thats why I got the movie, I just thought this movie did very little to showcase his talents.
