My gal and I have been soaking up alot of Japanese horror flicks lately; alot of Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Hideo Nakata (and a Hong Kong director named Chi-Leung Law; I know he's not Japanese, but, he's GREAT!)
Last night we picked up a flick called Mail that's based on the comic book series by Shigemizu Tagasaki. Now, when watching this, it comes across as a series of short stories; kinda like a Japanese Twilight Zone.
I'm not much into comics, but I know some of you are. Have any of you comic bookers seen this? I'm curious about the history of the main character Akiba (sp)
Oh, it also stars the ADORABLE Chiaki Kuriyama (Who, I'm told, is in one of the Kill Bill flicks)

I guess what I'm wanting to know is, is this "movie" a compilation of Japanese TV shows that's crammed together into one movie?

Having met 7th dan aikido-ka Steven Seagal in person at an aikido seminar some years ago I can attest to this: The man may not be a great actor, but his martial arts ability is incredible. He is a gracious and intelligent teacher whose very presence commands respect. I believe his finest film was Above the Law... everything since has kind of gone down hill. (After watching "The Patriot" I wanted him to come and kick me in the ass for renting it). He trained with Dan Inosanto, who you may or may not know, (student of Bruce Lee) who was amazed at Mr. Seagal's ability as well. That's high praise.
Executive Decision was also a great film, tho Mr. Seagal only played a small part in it.
Mr. Seagal was also born in Lansing, MI, my city. Wee!
I've mentioned Mr. Seagal's name 5 times now... how's that schizophrenia doing? :D

It was a good movie, and him dying so early on was only a plus.

A true fan, eh? :)
He would never have been able to compete with Kurt Russell's chin anyway.
John Leguizamo was also in executive decision... small world.

Heh if you like Chiaki Kuriyama (she looks like a dog faced gremlin to me) she's also in the very first Grudge movie, Ju-On: Curse, it's probably the worst drawn out scene in the whole film (a friggin phone ringing for 3 minutes!?!) but shes there and gets killed :D

Dog faced gremlin? Isn't that a bit harsh....I think she's a cutie!

I may say that she is the hottest Asian actress out there right now...but I havent seen them all:D
She is also in a great flick called Battle Royale, a movie based on a series of manga comics...or the comics may have come after the movie...I dunno, we were talking about comics...anyways, you should definately pick up that film...its about Japan kidnapping a class of students every year, putting them on an island, and making them kill each other off...the winner gets to live. It also has Vic Romano from MXC as the bad guy in it:D His name is Beat Takashi or Takashi Kitana (I think), and is a very famous actor and director in Japan.
And that ends your first session in Asian filmaking and acting 101:D

This chick aside, do all these Japanese horror movies have the same basic plot?
And what is it about water that freaks the Japanese out so much? It seems to be in all their movies. Are they, as a culture, hydrophobic?
Seems kind of weird given that Japan is a series of island surrounded by water...

Well, it's not like ALL American HollyYawn flicks don't have the same plot either.....At least most of the Japanese horror flicks have some sort of plot and don't try to hire an actor to look spooked in most scenes..... Or hire some kid to "see dead people".
In fact, I can't name ONE good "Hollywood" ghost flick that was made after
The Uninvited - 1944

Hrm hrm..."Ghostbusters"(although it's really a comedy), "Poltergeist", "The Frighteners", "Field of Dreams" - hey, I know it seems weird, but they are ghosts, "Sleepy Hollow"(not great...but decent), "An American Werewolf in London", "Beetlejuice", "Scrooged", "The Shinning"
Sorry Adreno....I had to do it :D

Didn't he beat up his wife or something? I'd find it hard to respect him if that was the case.
Chiaki Kuriyama - wasn't she in Battle Royal as well? I seem to remember that in the build up to Kill Bill they mentioned that one of the Japanse actresses was from Battle Royal.

Well, I never said there was an accounting for taste...

Hmm.. if that's the case, that's pretty reprehensible. According to a web search I did, he was charged with domestic assault, but no word if he was proven innocent or not. Odd too, considering he has been involved in Buddhism for much of his life.
I love japanese horror. They know how to make movies the right way. I saw Ringu and it is far better than the American version

Actually, the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi was the runaway sleeper hit of the year! That was made in 1990.
The original House on Haunted Hill (the one with Mr. Price) was a decent enough flick, and who'll lie and say that old woman floating across the floor didn't creep them out? Yeah... that was some scary stuff.
