As I sit here sippin Mescal and rockin' out to Queens Of The Stone Age, I gotta ask you peeps at HPotD a question. What's your favourite album of all time? It's probably been raised before elsewhere but I don't give a s**t. I will allow one old-skool album and one new album as it can be difficult to decide at times.
Me?
Old-skool: The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
New: The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute

old school - led zeppelin 1 - how many more times has the best solo ever.
new school - arrgghh when is new? this decade? if so then "akercocke - goat of mendes" but if you means 90s then "manic street preachers - The Holy Bible"
if you like queens of the stone age, give "the big black" by orange goblin a go (if you havent already) specifically the track "scorpionica".

Hrm....I can't possibly have only two. There are many different aspects to determine what is a favorite of all time....old or new. Here's just a few off the top of my head:
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - The Beatles
"Diorama" - Silverchair
"Physical Graffiti" - Led Zeppelin
"Before These Crowded Streets" - Dave Matthews Band
"S.C.I.E.N.C.E." - Incubus
"Evolver" - 311
"St. Louis to Liverpool" - Chuck Berry
"A Show of Hands" - Victor Wooten
Sorry dude. I know you asked for two....but it just can't be done. I actually have some more.:p

Saw Orange Goblin a bunch of times but I dont own one damn thing of theirs, crazy huh?
"Physical Graffiti" - Led Zeppelin
Great album but I much prefer Led Zeppelin 1 or In Through The Out Door.

I like ALL Zeppelin....but "Physical Graffiti" has always stood out to me for some reason. My next favorite would probably either be "IV"(some call it Zoso) or "Houses of the Holy".

YES!!! I LOVE silverchair and Diorama is one of the best albums I've bought in years. Unfortunatly, they aren't too popular anymore over here in the states...

As unpopular as this will be with Liam, :p, it'll be popular with Hellsing, so it's balanced out. :D
My favourite album is currently (and has been for a few years now), "Razorblade Romance" by HIM. When I first heard it one Winter's evening in first year Uni after coming in from the cold and sticking it on loud, I just loved it and promptly spoodged all over the shop as I loved it so much. :):p
"Appetite For Destruction" by Guns n Roses
"There Is Nothing Left To Lose" by Foo Fighters
"Unplugged In New York" by Nirvana
"Dookie" by Green Day
"10,000 Days" by Tool
Those are some other faves off the top of my head, but Razorblade Romance is my top fave.:thumbsup:

MZ you think your album choice was bad then get ready for this!
My fav album of all time has to be without a doubt The Rasmus - Dead Letters, not one track i would skip on that album.
Story of the year - Page Avenue is also another album i adore
(remember i am only 19!! haha)
As for an old album its hard to choose as i dont own many although i do like the odd Phill Collins albums or a bit of Moondance by van morrison! Yes ok some might say god how say but each to there own :)

"Strapped down to my bed
feet cold and eyes red
I'm out of my head
am I alive?
am I dead?
Sunkist and Sudafed
gyroscopes and infrared
won't help, I'm brain dead
can't remember what they said
God damn... S**T THE BED!"

I'm so eclectic in my listening choices right now. Actually, since my wife joined a band and started drumming again, I've been kind of pulled into the 'local scene'. So much so, that I can't really think of the last album that I've been excited over...
(and before anyone ribs me over this post, please note that I didn't drop any links as this was NOT a plug for anything :p)

Good stuuf. Strait ahead melodies and a good garagey recoding without a lot of crap pasted on top. Thanks for the link!:)
A couple records I like, hard to get 2 so I wont. So many rulebreakers:)
I also Love Pet Sounds.
I have some bootlegs where you can hear how they built the tracks and the amount of subtle instrumentation is just incredible. So many tiny percussion bits and all on 4 track. The song structures are really wierd and creative. A lot of the lyrics are so kooky and directed at specific situations which I have not heard in any records of the period. Joni Mitchells Blue is the only other record I can think of , Lyrically, thats like that. Just a perfect record.
BLack Flag The Process of Weeding Out and Damaged. I love the instrumental stuff. The tonality is bizarre and it's still mighty after all these years. Greg Ginn is a master of chromatic hostility. The drumming is off the wall too with all those martial snare rolls.
Minutemen- Double nickels on the Dime. Its like 50 great songs on 1 record. Every one inventive. The theme from Jackass, that's Corona by Minutemen.
Dust Bros. Fight Club. My Favorite Soundtrack/Electronic record. It's all over the place in the best way. Its one of the few soundtracks that stands alone as a record.

hehe, again with the fight club soundtrack. fair enough, it is probably the modern equivalent of the clockwork orange soundtrack as far as standalone quality goes.
gonna chime in a few more...
metallica - master of puppets (predictable choice yep)
aphex twin - drukqs
death in vegas - contino sessions

thats a good one but i prefer "and love said no greatest hits 1997-2004" gay as hell title for a pretty good album.
a for old school its either blizzard of ozz, or porbably an old meatloaf one since my mom drilled that **** into my head when i was a toddler, seriously i aint heard a meatloaf song in years and i can still quote all the lyrics to "i would do anyting for love"

This is a really hard question and I know I'm going to want to change my answers within 5 minutes, but I'll hold off and try to leave them at this...
Morbid Angel - "Alters Of Madness"
Beastie Boys - "Pauls Boutique"
DEATH - "The Sound Of Perseverance"
Boston - "Boston"
Judas Priest - "Sin After Sin"
The Offspring - "Smash"
Sepultura - "Beneath The Remains"
Beastie Boys - "Licensed To Ill"

Pauls Botique is great. The lyrics are really inverntive and pretty hardcore. At the time it was SUPER hardcore. Now they disown it because they don't realize they now suck balls.
For Priest I like Sad wings of Detiny (victim of changes rules) and Point of Entry. I think Minisrty The Land of Rape and Honey is better. It's taste, but it was also super new when I heard it and totally infulenced me Musically at the time. That and Butthole surfers Hairway to Steven. Kuntz is a classic. We didn't really think you could make Acid influenced Hard music. It had never occured to me before that.
Death Sound of preserverence is great if It is what I think it is. Is that the real rearly one with the garagey demo sound?
Boston?!?!?!? WTF?. Not saying it sucks, but I'm kinda surprsed. Morbid angel, Death...Boston:)
Hellsing, how is record from 93 old school? I think of Old school as mid 80s and under. But hey, Im like 20 years older than you. and hanks for reminding me you little bastid:p
Blizzard of Ozz was great because after Sabbath broke up (and never say die, the last record was pretty lame) all us fans were bummed. We thought oz was gone forever. Then Blizzard came out and it was great. Randy Rhodes was a huge star for a couple years before he died. His music has never really recovered.

I cant believe no one mentioned Queen
Queen: Greatest Hits 1 & 2 (this never changes!)
Snoop: Doggy Style
2Pac: All Eyez On Me
Delirious?: World Service
Nirvana: Nevermind
Michael Jackson: Bad
Ruff Endz: Love Crimes
Tenacious D: Tenacious D
Theres tons more but they always change depending on my mood. I could throw a little Sinatra in there along with abit of MoTown, little of Robbie Williams, some Green Day the list goes on....... ;)

My favorite Album is The Doors - in Concert.
It's a 2CD album covering their best songs from various concerts.
It has my favorite song ever, 'When the Musics Over'. The studio version is slow and dull but the live version is immense! Also included excellent versions of 'Soul Kitchen', 'Gloria' and 'Close to you'.
I can't think of any other albums that compete with the one above, so I'm going to leave it there.
I do not buy music. I am probably the only person on earth like that but growing up my favorate album was Michael Jacksons's "Thriller" and basically all albums by Styx, Blue Oyster Cult, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd.

8) Sex & Religion : Steve Vai
7) Fair Warning : Van Halen
6) Zappa plays Zappa : Dweezil Zappa
5) Sand : Allan Holdsworth
4) Individual Choice : Jean Luc Ponty

I think Pauls Boutique was probably blowing people away when it came out. I was too young to own it and even if I did, I don't think I would have been able to grasp how revolutionary it was at the time.
As far as Priest goes... they're one of my favorite bands of all time; I love every album they've released (yes, even Turbo) excluding the stuff with Tim Owens. If I had to pick JUST ONE it would have to be Sin After Sin, unless I could pick greatest hits albums, in which case I'd pick the "Metalogy" boxset I have (even though it doesn't contain THE RIPPER on it, what the hell?!?!).
I think Ministry's best album, by far, was Psalm 69. The Land Of Rape And Honey never really did much for me. I've been listening to Psalm 69 since it came out and it's still one of the heaviest albums I own.
The DEATH album you're thinkin of is Scream Bloody Gore. That's a classic. Once again, I love every album Chuck released. The Sound Of Perseverance was the final album that came out. It was extremely smart and progressive, produced very well, and had the amazing Richard Christy on drums.
Oh and about Boston... despite what most people think, I don't only listen to metal (although it's the true love of my life). I'm a sucker for classic rock, as well. Not to mention punk (the real shiv, not farking Rancid or Green Day or any of that CRAP). My favorite guilty pleasure, though, is old school hip-hop; everything from The Fresh 3 MC's to The Cold Crush Brothers to LL Cool J and Ice-T's first LP's.

My favorite Album is The Doors - in Concert.
Great double live cd. I think The Doors version of Gloria is better than the original ("wrap yer legs around ma neck, wrap yer arms around ma feet, yuuuhh") and of course their performance of The End from the Hollywood Bowl is a classic. The pinnacle for me though was The Celebration Of The Lizard, major trip-out material. Do you have the concert of The Doors Are Open? It was a black and white video performance recorded at The Roundhouse in London and contains the best version of When The Music's Over ever recorded in my estimation.
Oh yeah, nearly forgot. "Dead Rats, dead cats, thinks he's an aristocrat, well that's CRAP!"

Didn't like Illcommunication too much. I like the hardcore stuff. I hate "lets all be nice and friendly" hiphop. If I want nice and friendly I'll listen to CSN. Though Aglio E Olio ep is a great one. I really love their punk stuff. Nervous Assistant is great.
I think Pauls Boutique was probably blowing people away when it came out. I was too young to own it and even if I did, I don't think I would have been able to grasp how revolutionary it was at the time.
It totally was. Dylan samples? That was nuts. and the rhymes were vicious. We all new it was something revolutionary. Everybody was like "How do they make music like that?". BBoy Bouuibase is great. its like 12 somgs on 10 minutes. That and Public Enemy nation of millions were really tripped out. Rap went directly from the Fat Boys to that. Thats like going from Chuck Berry to Electric Ladyland literally overnight, for example. Sampling was the biggest mystery back then becausse an sampler was like 5000 dollars and noone had ever seen one.
Im pretty much the same. I liked turbo too. Wasnt Sin after Sin the one with Diamonds and Rust? I LOVE that tune. A Joan Baez cover? Thats pretty imaginative. The first Priest tune I ever heard was Victim of Changes. I never heard anything like it and I'll never forget the feeling something that new gave me.
I think Ministry's best album, by far, was Psalm 69. The Land Of Rape And Honey never really did much for me. I've been listening to Psalm 69 since it came out and it's still one of the heaviest albums I own..
I think the Live album (In case you didnt feel like showing up oe somethign) is the best. Forgot about that one. The Stigmata is Evil. I saw Ministry at the Building in 1991 and they had a barbed wire fence in front of the stage. It was punishing but beautiful. Hard to describe. But I was getting kicked in the face on 3 hits of Acid so I guess that accounts for the clashing feelings:) . I saw them a bunch of times back them. And Pigface (a Ministry?NIN off shoot) they really smoked live.
The DEATH album you're thinkin of is Scream Bloody Gore. That's a classic. Once again, I love every album Chuck released. The Sound Of Perseverance was the final album that came out. It was extremely smart and progressive, produced very well, and had the amazing Richard Christy on drums.
Death is a one and only. I gotta dig out my CDs. I started getting so many that I havent even listened to them all.
I saw Both Green Day and Rancid before they got famous in San Francisco and I thought they both were Lame
Green Day "That aint punk! Thats fruity as hell!"
Rancid "They are like the Clash, but lame". I was used to hardcore and their version of punk was waaay softer then I expected. Though I got to see the Circle Jerks and that was one of the best shows I ever saw.
I love Old Skool and I aint guilty about it. I grew up with it Literally every week there was a new song with a new sound and a new style. Those were good times to be a fan. Other Good Ones;
Scholly D- PSK, Satuday Night and Welcome to America.
Run DMC Raining Hell
Rakim Dont sweat the Technique
When it comes to the Doors, their bootlegs really overshadow the studio recordings. They dont jam on the tunes as much as expand and contract them. Real interesting stuff.
And I love Ol' Zappa too.

Too many notes for the royal ear ?.. You're entitled to an opinion , unfortunately alot of people enjoy Mr Vais' music , and wont stop liking it . :skull: Mr Vai happens to be an incredible musician , worked with Frank Zappa for years . He can transcibe any solo on any instrument , to written music . But you cant hear it , and criticize him . His music is not sterile and blank , its just that it goes way over your head , and you dont enjoy it . His music has been called , " Music for people that love music ." , Any true musician isnt bothered by facial expression . If you are really into playing your instrument , it can be very hard to control your face when you play . If you are just sort of standing there with a blank face because youre afraid what people think of your expression when you play , you should be an accountant ,not a musician ...as Bill Murray said on "Thats not Funny , Thats sick " : Sombody once said that face when Ah play da bass kinda gets kinda like a jelly fish , like somebody rubbin' rubber ."

I like Vai's Zappa stuff, though I am not really crazy about his records. Joe Satriani, on the other hand, really sucks. His albums sound awful like the Drums, Ugh> I think his music has no taste at all. Not liking Vai doesn't make it over his head just not this taste. I understand it and don't find it (Usually) that appealing.
I scowl whe I play. Even if I am plaing some country pickin stuff I look all pissed off. Or sometimes smirky. It's not on purpose. People will tell other people they like my stuff, but never me because I scare them I guess, which is funny becasue I am very polite and appreciative. When you are playing the hell out of your instrument you are allowed to make all kinds of funny looks. Except G.E. Smith. He is a massive tool.

GE smith wanker indeed , ever heard the Vandals song about him ,"GE must go "? As you are entitled to your opinion about Joe , still he makes music and people like it , and he makes good $ at it ...Whilst there are severly limited talents out there that make moolah off the stupid fast-food factory that has become "popular Muzak " ... I dislike minimalism when its all they do ; minimalism has a place . It only makes an impact if you really have creative and expressionistic ability with whatever music is being made . Why should a musician worry that they will intimidate the audience with thier ability? Its like in the beginning of "The adventures of Baron Munchausen " a soldier is shot (played by Sting) for saving fellow soldiers .Excelled talent to me is an inspiration to be a better musician , and listener at the same time .

I live Steve Vai, as long as he's not writing the song. He does great parts, but not crazy about his records. People can like Satch or anything, I think he's dull. He could make a billion $$$, I still dont like it (I know thats not what you mean) I like musicality. One of my all time Favs is Coltranes Meditations. You want to clear a room, put that on.
Never heard the vandals tune, but I want to. My girl use to see GE and yell "What the hell is wrong with that guy". He makes the cum face when hes vampin on an A Barre. Whatta chump. Jimmy PAge makes some goofball faces but he's kickin ass. Zappa doesn't make any and he destoys (Black Napkins!:) Great tune)
Minimalism? In what context? Electronic preset Arpeggio tunes? Muzak? 12 tone tedium?

it doesnt go over my head, and it doesnt have too many notes for my royal ear, and may i say i get the same prententious, condescending replies from all vai fans. youre a guitar nerd, right?
i listen to lots of OTT fretwanking, i actually like a *bit* of satriani, malmsteen, lots of rodrigo y gabriela, mattius eklunde (spelling almost certainly butchered) also john 5 and some other folks.
by "sterile" i mean that steve vais instruments nearly always sound like he's just bought them, you imagine the studio being crystal white and having that new car smell.
ever heard of interesting production or experimental recording techniques?
as you said, he can transcribe any piece to any instrument etc, but i think that's part of his problem, to me, he's all technique and no soul. he could NEVER make something as simple and entertaining and interestingly produced as a sex pistols or nine inch nails record. it's out of his league, and yet he's this great musician? hmm. you might think those bands suck, but the fact remains.
nothing he has ever written makes me angry, or sad, or feel inspired. it's just his big pretentious attempt at projecting his ego through a series of self aggrandising musical endeavours. *loosens collar*
i appreciate that other musicians like his music because it is unencumbered by traditional songwriting structures thus leaving him free to pursure many innovative and unorthodox musical ideas, but yknow, i'm one of these weirdos who listens to music for the way it makes me feel emotionally, not to be impressed and aspire to some musos technical genius.
as you can probably tell, i have long debates with the guitarist in my band about this stuff (he plays stuff like "eugenes trick bag" on his guitar over and over)!!!
but, each to his own, if you like it, that's cool, i wouldnt criticise you personally for eating different types of cheese to me...just don't assume i'm some tool who listens to my chemical romance & has no clue! ;)

I was in a band in the 80's we were produced by Youth whos the founding bassist for Killing Joke ... I love The Pistols and most punk ... Bury the hatchet .I am deeply moved by music emotionally & I relate to you that way .I would like to mention that Vai played guitar on the PIL "Album" , "Cassette" "Compact Disc" ( the generic blue stripe ) from 1986 ...BTW , Charles Ives was a great composer and wrote some real intense stuff . May I also run Allan Holdsworth by you ? If liking these artists makes me a guitar nerd , fine . What makes my adnoids curdle , is worshipping Jerry Garcia . Now he SUCKED > The 'royal ear' was a quote from Amadeus ...I relate to the ricital of 'eugenes trick bag' that would drive me bats ... Its not about how technically advanced you are , but connecting with the instrument and communicating ... ok? Peace , thats whats great about open disscussion ...Cheers !:skull:

:D cool. sorry if i sound a bit confrontational, but i'm passionate about music to the degree of being slightly immature! i have no bad blood or beef or whatever, blah blah...
vai also launched the career of heavy dev and played a bit with alice cooper, props for that. i agree with what someone said earlier about him adding great things to other people's projects but being a bit much on his own LPs.
it gets my hackles up when people who are currently hooked on records i got bored of ten years ago (at one point i was die hard black/death metal, and i get very bored of metallers taking the piss out of me for liking KMFDM and the like, seeing as they will probably be into it in a few years) try to insinuate theyre in some way musically above me - not that you did that sir,but i'm a coiled spring on this issue! any *hint* of it and ten paragraphs will fall out of me...
sorry about the guitar/music nerd thing, it was pretty rich coming from someone who owns a theremin and a soundproofed bedroom ;)
i have this thing about guitar enthusiasts who reduce music to some kind of spectacle, an endurance sport if you will, where only the lightning fast sweep picking at the speed of light bastards get a look in. they have an air of superiority, when i feel they don't actually understand music to begin with!

You talk about Garcia sucking....and then go on to say that a good musician is one that can connect with the instrument and the audience. Hrmm.....bit of a contradiction there, because Garcia did just that.
Now, you may have the personal opinion that you don't like his music, but to say that he sucked and didn't accomplish the things mentioned above.....well that's just plain wrong. Even I can say that some trash metal guys put emotion into it....doesn't mean I like the music.

yeah, when you get so many fans that they coin a term for 'em, you've connected w/ your instrument and audience.

I'm taking this as sarcasm....hard to tell through text but I think you're being sarcastic here...
And this has to do with what? Because the fans call themselves "deadheads" it means that he's not good? Right.....

nope....I meant that literally....If you've got enough fans that they've coined a term for 'em, that's is evidence that you've connected w/ a lot of freakin' people. sorry for the ambiguous tone, hope i didn't rattle the old nerves too bad :)

Man what a tripwire I stepped on ! Sorry ... Just sick of fighting on this otherwise cool site ... I dont like Jerry "the Gods" playing , sounded to me like he was just meandering about playing notes , I cant feel anything in his expression in the guitar ... I am sorry for ragging on him . I retract it ... ahem . :bored:
