View Full Version : Do you think its odd to have..
a huge DVD collection.
I have at least 300 movies and I am proud to say 90% of them are horror and sci-fi. Not to mention my dozen or more Japanese movies and Godzilla flicks. Whenever I have someone over they give me a that creepy look when they see my collection. I even had someone say jokingly that they hoped I would not stab them when they saw the horror flicks I had. lol! I do not think it is odd or abnormal at all to be a DVD collector. I am just someone that thinks renting is a waste of money. If I was going to spend $5 on a rental I might as well spend another 10$ and own it. I would rather watch a good scary movie or a cheezy 50's sci-fi over a stupid chick flick or kiddy teen movie any day!

Yeah, I've got a huge collection as well. Only mine isn't composed of alot of horror films. I have a balance of all kinds of stuff. Lots of classics.
Alot of the time, my friends will laugh at the amount I have because they think it is a waste of so much money. Then again, these are the same friends, that about 10 years ago, laughed at me for buying an expensive DVD player(when they were first getting widely accepted) saying that it was a waste of money and wouldn't be useful in five years. Now they all have multiple DVD players and dvds:rockbrow: ....

Well I do have some comedy and Monty Python. I think 1/3 of my movies is comedy, action, miscl...and 2/3 horror and sci fi. I have some classics like old vincent price and The Day the Earth Stood Still. I am sad to say that I lost my "Robot Monster"

I just picked up Monty Python and the Holy Grail the other night for my GF. Good movie, very funny. That's about all the comedy I have. I have about 100-200 DVDs but I get on-demand, too. A little overkill, I know, but you never know when you might want to see a certain movie.

I think that's pretty stupid of people to give you strange looks over your movie collection. They should be impressed!

i think if you have 300 films and say 250 of them are all horror or scifi, it would be kinda of strange. only because there are so many great movies out there, to buy only sci-fi, and horror movies means your well past being "commited to the Premise" and there something going on.
at last count, i have some where near 400 DVDs. i'd say maybe 150-75 are scif and horror.

You should check out "MP: Life Of Brian" and "MP: The Meaning of Life". I love "The Holy Grail", but "Life of Brian" is my favorite Monty Python flick.
If you really like the Monty Python troupe, pick up the 16 ton megaset of "Flying Circus". Now THAT is alot of funny:D ...

I've got close to 600 DVDs and only about 125 are horror or sci fi (most of those are very low budget). The rest are classics, comedy and foriegn.
I just bought one the other day called Songs From the Second Floor (Sånger från andra våningen) It's a VERY bizarre Swedish flick made in 2000 -It's quite hyptnotizing.

Well a lot of the sci fi and horror are old classics too. Not like they are all slasher movies or zombie stuff. Now if I had 300 Teenager boy meets girl kinda movies (like Bring It On) Now that will be crazy.lol I would run away as fast as I can!

I can not wait till that movie about slugs is in the theater. Is it suposed to be a remake of Night of the creeps? Seems like it.

I have 295 dvds (thanks dvd aficionado for counting them), I haven't bought many in the past year, but in the next few months there are a lot of good movies coming out on DVD so my collection should break the 300 mark.

No it is not odd, for if it is then I'm the oddest in the bunch here. I've been collecting dvds for the past 5 years and its the safest, albeit expensive, hobby I've done. Plus, I never have to worry about whether there's anything good to watch on TV.

Can't really pick a favorite. Pretty much all of them except the last season when Cleese left the show. If I had to pick a few I would say "Whither Canada?"(first episode), "The Ant, an Introduction", or "Henry Thripshaw's Disease". I suggest you pick up the set....it's worth every penny.
Speaking of DVDs...Some of you might like to know that there is a new(cheaper) dvd collection of the "Godfather" films. I know the old set was always like 60-70 dollars around here so I never wanted to fork out that kind of cash for 4 discs. I found the new one at Best Buy for 35 dollars. Good deal. I thought someone might like to know:shifty:

The X-Files season sets are lso being re-released at a cheaper price of 30-40 per set instead of the 100+ for the original sets. This will just help add to my collection.

Im approaching 500 or so DVDs....a lot of what I bought was to replace my extensive VHS collection..
I hardly have any horror movies though because I think its a genre riddled with horrible crap....
I of course have all the dead movies...(Romero's)....and the dead movies that are Remakes of Romero's...
Other than that though I do not have "horror" movies....I do not count stuff like Frailty as horror
Most of the movies I own I would say boarder on genreless...but I suppose could be considered Drama?...

If you use the DVDaficionado.com cataloguing system you'll find out just exactly which genre you have the most of. I'm at currently 1572 and drama leads the way at 362 titles with horror a distant second with 221.

Im saying that sometimes I dont agree with how some movies are placed into genres....
like Dawn of the Dead could be considered a societal sattire....

True but then it's really a horror film when taken to its most basic level. Remember, horror is its first and foremost pull on the audience. The social commentary that gives it meaning really only picked up by a percentage of the people who watch it. Plainly, people who visit this forum and its like.

I could never get into that Bollywood crap. And I love foreign films. I think if Bollywood made a zombie movie it'll have dancing and singing zombies and no blood and gore.

Try the South Korean Vengeance trilogy by Chan Wook-Park: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

While there's a thread on the subject, I have to ask....Does anybody else here alphabetize or categorize their dvds in any way?
That's another thing that my pals like to laugh about but with as many dvds as I have, it's needed in order to find what im looking for within 15 minutes:p
