1. I remember being an avid HpotD user... (yes, it was horrible addiction) 1997 - 2000. What's this about a major crash in 2001?

2. Why the threads/links removal when dealing with copyright issues, file sharing etc.? Surely us discussing these matters do not constitute property infringment on behalf of HpotD?

1) HPOTD had a big blow up like you said, it was hacked and everything fell apart. It was down for a few months during this time, and of course (as we're sitting in front of it), Neil brought HPOTD back to life.

2) Read the Rules/FAQ segment, it's all explained there. But for those too lazy to go and check it out, this is the jist:

Loom was 'private software' created by Neil. VBulletin is not. The VBB software is licensed, so matters concerning copyright infringement are to be avoided to protect both the licensee - but ultimately VBulletin - from getting their asses sued by the RIAA or whoever is on a crusade.

Talking about the culture surrounding downloading is fine, or saying "I downloaded [media name] t'other day, and it rocked!" is fine.

However, providing information on where to acquire files that infringe copyright (e.g. a Torrent website, links to P2P software), as well as providing information on how to go about using downloaded media after the action of downloading (e.g. how to burn an AVI of Titanic to a VCD - or how to copy DVDs) - is all against the rules.

The rule regarding copyright infringement is completely 100% un-moveable. Like it says in the FAQ, irrespective of what the admins/mods think about downloading, the topic (beyond cultural and non-informative discussion) is completely not allowed.
