The sound of my laptop's woefully pointless pokey little fan spinning around like a madman trying to deal with a file "checking" through itself.

The last song I listened to (about an hour ago) was:

"Hearts on Fire" by John Cafferty - FRIGGIN' EXCELLENT, perhaps the best montage song there has ever been - as seen in Rocky IV (yes, I've been on a major Rocky kick recently, and I'm loving it).

Not listening to anything right now because it's 7 in the morning but I wanted to contribute to what you guys were saying about GnR...

Not even remotely enough people give credit to Izzy Stradlin. In fact, some people question "Who?" when you mention him. Appetite For Destruction wouldn't be what it is if it weren't for him.

Actually, to most people when you mention GnR it's always Axl or Slash to them. I rarely hear anything said about Izzy, Duff, or Steven unless the person is a true rocker.

capncnut
13-Feb-2007, 12:46 PM
There's no doubt that Izzy Stradlin WAS GNR at the time but I don't think he has fared to well on his own, thus making him a non-legend in my eyes. Axl was a great vocalist and Slash an excellent guitarist, they had presence but Stradlin and Duff were the backbone, no argument there. I still prefer Finck though, his technical ability far outweighs Izzy and Slash's put together. Why Axl insists on having three guitarists (four if you include Stradlin's little comebacks) onstage when he's got Finck up there is beyond me?

Edit: I just saw this new pic of Izzy, boy he's changed! Clickeroo (http://muzyka.onet.pl/_i/info/duze/i/izzy_stradlin.jpg)

Maybe, but I have communed with my inner geek after being undercover many years and I am much happier. My GF encourages my dorkiness rather than ridiculing me, which was a blessing.
For survivals sake I had to submerge my true self and it took me years to break out of it. I mean, I lurked on this forum for like 5 years before I ever posted, but now I am free.:D

I love NPR. wide variety of world information and intervoews. Its not just for faux intellectuals. I do get sick of the over emphasis and jizzing on Classical flamenco guitarists and snobby poets, but luckily that is rarer than you would think.
Due to my crap vision I cant read as much as I used to, so things like NPR have been more important to me

I made myself another Mix CD today and listened to it in the car this afternoon/evening when I was out driving around (was supposed to be going to a job, but got there and it was no longer on, so I got paid to drive there and sit for 45 minutes and then drive home ).

It has 3 tracks from the "best of Rocky OST" album thing that was put out for Rocky Balboa - the Rocky theme by Bill Conti, Eye of the Tiger and - of course - Hearts on Fire, which I listened to several times throughout the journey, which made yomping around the country lanes in the rain so much more fun.

Also on the CD was (among others):

Rob Zombie - American Witch
Mogwai - We're No Here
- AutoRock
24 OST - Kim & Terri Escape From ... (forgets rest of title)
+44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating
Snow Patrol - Open Your Eyes (seen the video? Great song to drive to as a result)

There's a bunch more too, like I said, on that thar Mix CD I made today ("2007 Mix 2").

Do you mean "unusual"?

Snow Patrol are good, damnit!

Yes, they may be popular, but that's for a reason - they're actually good and they make good music. Not like all these other bands that are copies of each other that just get thrown out there to flood the market (e.g. the million bands whose names begin with "The" and are then followed by some random word, e.g. "Subways") - basically, the sort of bands you see standing on top of that podium thing on The Friday Night Project...

I have four Travis albums in my collection, they're good too! I don't listen to them that much now, in fact barely have in the past few years (recently did a one-whisk tour through my Travis collection when I was revisiting music I'd listened to back in the day - "The Man Who" was the best Travis album I reckon).

...*rolls eyes at the childish sniggering*...

Whateva...minga ... ... (anyone get that reference?)

Cold Play, when they're not playing music, are a bit up their own arse, I completely agree - "afford to be Liberal" is my estimation (and call your kid a real name, not after a friggin' fruit ya numpty! What will the next one be "Pear"?) ... but their music is pretty decent (their recent album wasn't too hot though, some good tracks, but A Rush of Blood to the Head was great).

And Snow Patrol are quality, just cos they get a lot of play, doesn't mean they suck, just means they've got a lot of people listenin', and they make a great sound.

My musical tastes are wide and varied ("expanding faster than a whore's vagina" ... to quote Brandon DiCamillo ... there, some crudity to butch it up for the likes of Hellsing, Liam and Capn )...

It's all a matter of personal taste, and I'm all over the shop, today I've been going through early White Zombie that I downloaded (I think WZ 1989 onwards is my cup-o-zombie-tea preferably).

But I think we can all agree that twats like Paris Hilton and that rehab-hopping-whats-her-name ... Lohan ... can get f*cked with their pro-tools developed gargling. They don't even have to be in key for cryin' out loud ... no wonder someone had the good sense to throw trash at that slag Hilton when she was at some crap mall event to promote her wonky eye...

You have to be somewhat in range for the pitch correction app to not sound too artificial. God help me, but I was surprised at how good That slags CD sounded. Im not saying she can sing but she couldnt have been too far off. I have used various pitch correction technology so I know how it works.

I just listened to Bad Brains the youth are getting restless. The Brains are great. I saw them as "soul Brains" a couple of years ago and it was one of the best shows I ever saw.

I dont get Guitar Hero either. I never played it, but I bet in the time it takes to master the game you could actually learn to play something.

lol ... not really, but it just makes already retarded teens even more retarded and act like Amy from Hollyoaks, what a stupid tart that character is, geeeeeeeeeeeez! If that character represents the average teenage girl ... oh dear.

It's strange though, how sexually charged the music videos for such tracks are - like "Satisfaction". Great video, but damn, it's just sweaty tits bouncing up and down ... and that "Call on Me" or whatever it was called, a bunch of really hot chicks wearing incredibly shear one-pieces stretching and spreading their legs while the luckiest bloke in the entire f*cking universe flirts with them all ... lucky twat.

I hope you don't mean "The Sacrament" as "old school" HIM, that's new stuff dude. Old school is anything under Razorblade Romance ... and RR is pushing the "old school" barrier a bit.

Incidentally, I've been rocking Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666 lately.

Ooh - they've got the second part of that 'alternate mixes' thing they started last year. The first was the 'softer side', the new one that comes out next month is the 'harder side' ... and I think it includes that kick ass version of Buried Alive By Love. I like the album version, but the unreleased version was just so much better, that should be a fun album to listen to (for HIM fans, Capn, geeeeeeez ). :)

Thanks! It's my Zombie epic that has several features
Zombies that shamble and dont run or fly
Characters that talk like real people and all their motivations make sense.
No firearms (none!)
Epic scenes of city combat. Citizens vs. Zombie hordes.
No tough cops or any kind of authority figures as a lead. Strictly tangential.
Situations of different peoples experiences that haven't been seen before.
Regular people doing regular things. The old "what would happen to ME?" rather than the juvenile "I will have rocket launchers and kick ass like Roddy Piper in they live".

Sort of like Night meets Rear Window. Split between Vast exteriors and claustrophobia.
I really want to get this made. Maybe then I can have my dedicated forum too:p. It might cost a lot for some of the bigger scenes.

I want to talk about the whole thing, but there is a lot of originality that will evoke the "Thats so obvious, Why didnt I think of that?" and that is easy to rip off and I tired of getting ripped off.

When I was writing it I listened the the soundtrack to The Thing, Assault on Precint 13, Bela Bartok and Lots of cookie monster metal and Company Flow. It helped a lot. I had the news on in the background too and it really helped for the ultra grim vibe...unfortunatley :)

I got a similar thing going on myself so again, I know how it feels brother. It's been in the works since like 2000 and keeps changing and evolving - one minute I'm so close to finishing it and and the next, I feel a million miles away from it. I got so sick of f**king around that I stopped all work on the project and on Feb 24th I began writing something else - and already I'm two thirds done!

Now I'm getting new ideas for the original story and I've decided - s**t or bust - I'm just gonna write the thing when I'm done with my current project. And where does this tie in with your original post? P.I.L. John motherf**king Lydon gave me the inspiration for some reason. The Order of Death (and remixes of) especially. :D

I should've thought of PIL. Its good dark stuff. wel. sort of dark. well. discordant and wierd and droney:). Thats good writing stuff. Not too dense.
I was thinking how long it actually took from ides to finish. Not 3 years. I actually wrote the first outline in 1999. It's funny because I am a finish it fast guy usually. It took a long time because I was trying to get every idea I ever had for a zombie movie in it.

There were threas here about "what would you do of..: and I would always say "No you wouldn't, we would all die". And someone would tell me I was ruining there fantasies. But what I was actually doing was describing my script.

When you see a zombie film, people always say "I liked that but I wish there was more of the other stuff". My script is all "the other stuff". Not campy, just vicious and grim with some grisly black humor. I wanted it to be like how I heard vets describe combat. Slow periods interrupted by terrifying explosions of violence. I thought up some new ways to kill zombies sans traditional weapons.

Keep on the script Cap'n. Maybe you should just push on through to the end and THEN go back and tinker. Otherwise it will sit there laughing at you:D

And I am going to listen to PIL album now.:) To drown out the obnoxious late morning blast of Meringue from my Neanderthal neighbors in the next building.

Well with this new book I've been writing, it's just run away with itself and is probably the quickest project I have ever done. The zombie story WILL follow. I have decided to commit myself to re-writing the 80+ pages of usable material and just improvise more - it's very readable - but too stiff. The outline is all done, the characters are 80% complete and I'm certain that there's a lot of s**t that ain't been done before, then again they all say that. Oh and none of this running bollocks, shamblers, GAR's universe but thrown in a bear pit with 10 drunken Englishmen and kicked in the head with Doc Martens steel toecaps. :D

When I write dialouge I try to keep it conversational, rather than Movie or literary dialouge. I hear way too much, in ametuer/no bidget film, conversations that sound too clever. Just because you/we are too smart nerds doesnt mean most people talk like that. Thats not a problem I have, but I see it alot. Also, some thing may read well, but sound ultra stupid out loud. If you feel silly reading iot aloud, it probably sucks.
Even my descriptions are conversational.

Dialogue is probably my strongest point. I could probably write 20-30 pages with two characters talking about a piece of mouldy cardboard. The things that mess me up the most is characterisation, I'll create a person and then later write something completely contradictory to the personality I created for them. I'm terrible like that.

that drunken Dr Martin Head kicking snake pit stuff sounds really cool. I would be real into seeing that one! vague but cool.
Well one day soon I hope. My first book 'Punk & Disorderly' should be finished by May but I'm guessing June. Straight after, I'm jumping into the zomb story and I'm hoping that it will be a lot quicker to write given the fact that most of it is there for the re-write. Crazy s**t, tragedy around every corner, in fact a friend read some of it about a year or so ago and said that they wanted to cry. Made me feel quite proud 'cos I saw it in the eyes. But when the tragedy disappears, the undead return, no safety, thousands, face of Big Ben hanging off... (rambles into the distance) :D

Oh, currently listening to Filthy Lucre Live by the Sex Pistols.

I too enjoy writing dialogue, you really hammer through it don't ya?

I try to be as realistic as possible, so I sit there saying it back to myself over and over and over, and if I find myself stumbling, then the line needs changing. I think of what needs saying, and then say it myself, then write it down, especially helpful when you're writing about something based on your own life or things you've done/seen/heard etc, so you know how to put it down on 'paper' realistically.

Ahhh...now I know where the title of The Great Global Warming Swindle came from ... never been one for TSP...had a few tracks of theirs on my WinAmp back in the day, but I wasn't really into them, and then there was this guy who was into them who was such a dick, so that I mentally associated TSP with that dick, so it was spoiled.

MZ, it's a shame some dickhead ruined 'em for you 'cos the Pistols are an amazing group for their time. I love 'em, so much that I went ahead and wrote a biography of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Well, it's not exactly finished but I am roughly 60-70% into it. Started it late in Feb and it has taken up almost every second of my evenings.

There was some usless dickf**k that ruined Exile On Main Street by The Stones for me. Throughout my teenage years I hated that record with a passion. I Started listening to it in my mid twenties and I loved it so much that now I wouldn't be without it. Psychologically block this pleb from your thoughts and give Never Mind The Bollocks a listen - it's a truly stunning record!

I like some of their stuff still, but haven't really gone back there in a while, I'm in a more melodic, relaxed kinda mood ... not as much drooling anger of late ... that was more in my 17 through 20 era ... I remember once when I was 18 and at uni and my housemates were throwing pebbles at my window late one night (I was still up surfing) and I got pissed off, but got SERIOUSLY pissed off when one threw too big a stone and left a massive crack all over my window ... I went ABSOLUTELY BALLISTIC, seriously, the house shook with my booming voice, the girls living in the res with us got really concerned/scared/freaked out, my eyes were the widest they've ever been, and I was so close to thumping Tom (who threw the stone in question) ... anyway, apparently I sobered him up REALLY quickly and he was terrified he was gonna be thrown out of res or even uni for it, haha...but anyway, I was FUMING, I was screaming with such volitility that my voice just cut out and I couldn't physically talk for a few minutes.

...

So that was around the time I was listening to more "grrrrrr" type music (not a cause of my under-lying anger, but a way to get it out safely - take that, Mary Whitehouse et al)...

Anyway, I still appreciate TSP.

I'm kinda surprised how much my musical tastes have softened over the past couple of years, just more relaxed in general, more melodic and thought-provoking, rather than thrashing your head about ... but I still do that fairly frequently. :elol:*devil horns*

And here's a joke that involves music and the dead.

A student of proctology is in the morgue one day after classes, wanting to get a little practice in before the final exams. He goes over to a table where a body is lying face down. He uncovers the sheet over the body, and to his surprise he finds a cork in the corpse's rectum.

Figuring that this is fairly unusual, he pulls the cork out, and to his surprise, music begins playing:

"On the road again...just can't wait to get on the road again..." The student is amazed, and places the cork back in the backside. The music stops. Totally freaked out, the student calls the Medical Examiner over to the corpse.

"Look at this, this is really something," the student tells the examiner as he pulls the cork back out again. "On the road again...just can't wait to get on the road again..."

"So what?" the Medical Examiner replies, obviously unimpressed with the student's discovery.

"But isn't that the most amazing thing you've ever seen?" asked the student.

"Are you kidding?" replied the Examiner, "Any asshole can sing country music."

Yeah, you can't beat a good hefty dose of the 80's. Those John Hughes films caught the era perfectly. Especially with The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and Some Kind Of Wonderful.

"Killed by the husband,
Drowned by the ocean,

In fact the whole 10,000 Days album itself is awesome. Rosetta Stoned is my fave, whenever I put it on it completely transports me to another place. I saw Tool live last year (for the gazillionth time) and it was the best tour yet 'cos 10,000 Days is such a solid record.

I'm listening to Salival quite a lot, but yeah I can undertand why those two stand out for you. The tracks from 10,000 Days work a lot better live. When they played Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned, I have never seen the crowd so riled up in my life. Lateralus is probably their best record from the hardcore fans perspective, I dont blame them either 'cos it's a masterpiece.

Okay folks, what's wrong with that song? EVERYTHING!!! First off Trent Reznor should sue their asses over the backbeat 'cos there are a number of songs on NIN's last album With Teeth share similar drum noizes. Secondly, this 'new' direction has been successfully done by other bands for the last 10 years - notably plums like Lostprophets who can't stop the emotion bollocks every time they release a single. Congrats Shrinkin Park, you just made the jump from rap/metal to emo. Maybe in ten years time they'll catch up again and narrow themselves down to a two piece - a drummer and a guitarist/singer.

And damn their guitarist looks like Peter Sutcliffe, he should enter a lookalike contest! :D
