From what I understand, there is only one version. You want the SE dvd or blu ray. Nothing special about either other than the higher quality on blu ray.

Regardless....from what I know there is no current edition that's better than the other. Commentary, 15-20 minute making-of, etc. I could very well be wrong, but I think the choices are limited. Check Amazon for the best results.

I can't believe I know this when I'm not even a real fan of this movie...

Too bad they keep changing the music on the DVD releases. The Return of the Living Dead (1985) soundtrack was a classic.

Beware the beast, man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him, drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

I've only seen two versions: the original bare bones one I have, and the one I've seen out for a few years now that has extra stuff. I'd get that one if I didn't already own the crappy first one.

I went with the original cause that has the full frame version on one side and that has more picture. The widescreen is cropped for 16:9 and you get that too. The problem is they are dvd 5's, I am pretty sure, which means less bitrate for the movie since the extras are on both sides but it looks decent anyway. I am not sure if they did another transfer for the newer one which I doubt. If you want the best quality, look into getting the hidef one.

Why in the world would someone change the music in the movie? This is one of those movies the music fits very well to. Always loved this one but not sure there are other editions.

    say what!?

They cropped the full frame to get the widescreen!?

Is it the same on the special edition? Would anyone mind posting reference pictures, if possible?

I also read the newer version has a cleaned up transfer and more extras. I saw on amazon where they are selling it in a three pack and four pack with different movies for cheap.

The same cropping is true for Creepshow and Return II and I am not sure but maybe Dawn and Day too. But the Creepshow bluray, while cropped on the top and bottom, reveals more info on the left side which means it may be originally 1.66 (bluray is 1.77).
