do all walkie talkies need a base? I had some as a kid that had a range of about 150 meters and I am pretty sure they had no base they just worked between each other. |

No, walkie talkies with limited range do not need a base, and once past a short distance must be within line of sight to work, and then not at all past that. But we have no evidence that those "kid" walkie talkie sets existed in the mall, only the ones they found in the security/maintenance area. |
