-and to be fair, you arent a fanboy, technically you're a kevin smith apologist
    -sigh-

No offense Danny, really, but that's exactly what I was talking about. How is MZ (or anyone else for that matter) looking forward to Red State make him/them a KS apologist? or even a fanboy?

...and to say that going from making comedy films to making a horror film is "the last bastion of the lazy filmmaker" really? I guess it couldn't be because he might've wrote a killer story/script, and there's probably no way he made it because of the caliber of some of the actors who agreed to do it (Parks, Goodman). I mean, who'd wanna work with those clowns? And why would they want to act in a movie that's the last bastion of a lazy filmmaker anyway? I'm sure they didn't find anything exciting or redeeming about the script. That just couldn't be!

    </sarcasm>

I, personally, am not necessicarily in this because it's Kevin Smith - i'm more into this movie because of Michael Parks - although I admit I love the idea of Smith stepping outside of his "normal" realm and trying something new (something Romero should try doing again, 'cause the zombie thing sure as hell ain't working for him anymore). That bastard can act! And the idea of him playing the leader of an evil and apparently deadly religious cult just seems like a perfect part for him to play. Not only that, while people may have seen the "religious cult in the woods" story before, they haven't seen it with the delivery and ability that Parks can put into it, who I have no doubt will be a shining star of this flick, even if the movie is bad or even so-so.

To each his own, I guess.

yeah, that was a joke dude.

also im saying horror is the problem here, not smith. lets be honest, you see more shitty horror films released each day than any other genre of cinema. its almost always the atypical 6 plot points story of isolation and bad lighting and lots of red syrup. Low budget horror always gets less respect than low budget independent comedy or drama because so many douchebags film something in an abandoned building in the dark to a heavy metal soundtrack with no substance or level of quality and like so much cheap porn its still far more likely to turn a profit than something like waking life or clerks when they first came out.
Now i know that wont be smiths film, but you hear low budget independent horror film and most people who arent really into kevin smith in a 'diehard' way, but like his films are not going to be enthused by this films genre or subject matter.
Personally im just indifferent, i dont care about the story, but kevin smith directing john goodman is something that has me wanting to see it, it just wouldnt be the end of the world if i couldnt whereas i had to see clerks 2 day one. i dont think its going to be bad. i just think people are going to see "horror film by kevin smith the man behind jay and silent bob strikes back" and have the same reaction if it said "a touching period drama from eli roth the man behind hostel".

Sometimes I wonder what it'd be like to have a little brother, then I come to HPOTD and read what Danny The Contrarian has to say about anything remotely popular.

Don't get me wrong. . . I like Kevin Smith. I enjoy most of his movies. I just think that this movie is going to come off all hipster and "cool" . . . . like a snarky take on the Branch Davidians.

Yeah, I'm getting a Dogma vibe here.

Wow, you have an odd sense of humor that apparently went over my head. "smith apologist" and "last bastion of a lazy filmmaker" doesn't sound like a "joke" to me, but regardless.... it needed to be addressed because that kind of response is exactly the kind someone is met with bringing up Red State in any kind of positive way. I just don't get it.

C'mon bass, you should be in here with the "give the flick a chance before shooting it down!" thing right about now.

I said this when the first trailer was released: this is NOT a HORROR film (even though no one agreed with me about it at the time). It's a thriller. A psychological thriller. I'm sure there are some elements of horror (according to Smith) in the movie, but it's mostly about the psychological mindfuck of Parks and his crew of nutballs and their actions.

I think people calling it "horror" are giving all kinds of wrong impressions about the film. I know Smith has even called it that at times becuase of some of the elements of the film, but in none of the trailers did I see anything that resembled anything I'm used to calling a "horror" film. Smith has said he calls it "horror" because some of the horrific things this "church" does to people - but it's not exactly on par with what most consider traditional horror.

Exactly!!! And Dogma is probably my least favorite of his films.

I really loved Red State and wrote a review of it on my blog: http://aftermoviediner.blogspot.com/...usic-hall.html
Don't worry there aren't any spoilers (in fact there are more spoilers in this new trailer unfortunately!)
The best way to see this film is fresh!

I would say this film is like the Coen Brothers meets Tarantino but actually with a more 70s exploitation and grindhouse vibe than the grindhouse film Tarantino made.
It's Smith's best film in ages, really blew me away and I honestly went in looking to be disappointed. The whole premise put me off but I came away an utter convert.

I URGE people to see this film before they judge it, none of the trailers do it justice. One trailer doesn't show enough and the new one shows way too much it spoils it.

Interesting you mention spoilers in the new trailer - it does give a couple of things away, but on the other hand, as someone who is yet to see it, many of the shots don't make sense yet ... if that, er, makes sense. As in, they're not contextualised or in their correct order ... I've watched the trailer a couple of times, and yeah, they do reveal an awful lot of the basic plot, which is a touch annoying, but I'm just looking forward to finally getting to see it. I wonder what the UK release is going to be...

I didn't want to make a thread for this news article, but wanted to share. Apparently Smith is wanting to split his upcoming(last?) Hockey film, Hit Somebody, into two films?!? WTF? Does he think he's Tarantino or something? His single films can barely hold an audience and now he wants to plan a sequel in advance?

I predict a bomb on a massive scale. Dude has seriously lost his marbles...

To be fair, the script he's writing for it is massive ... I recall hearing a predicted 300 pages.

However, it'll surely do very well in Canada.

I gotta be honest here, I have zero interest in Hit Somebody. Red State is where it's at for me.
