I think if they left it all in (including classic score), dropped the new characters (the gravediggers and priest were f**king pitiful) and kept some of the new scenes (the Beekmans zombies looked cool, as did the car feast, and some of the posse scenes) then it might not have been so bad.
See, I thought even the extra zombie scenes were terrible - I remember one of the "bonus" scenes, they just pointed a camera haphazardly at a derelict car with a few people with cherry syrup on their clothes inside, then had a bunch of crappy zombies file past for ages. All in one static shot. Adding absolutely nothing to the movie.

You should've watched the bonus material, you might've thought twice about chucking it. The fifteen minute featurette is better than the whole movie. It has a bunch of the NOTLD oldies behind the scenes, including Hinzman larking around during the coffin scene, and nattering with his family later on.

Then again, the DVD also contains an utterly stupid scene from Flesh Eater (aka Zombie Nosh, a title I've always found funny ).

Yeah this came out in my pre-dvd player days, and I purchased it on vhs, so the only thing my version had on it was the awful and pointless Flesh Eater promo - which after having seen the 30th made me even angrier. Arrrrrrgh!!

I swore an oath at that time that I would get seek revenge for what they did to NOLD, so when I came across an aquaintance who had not seen this yet, but as a fan intended to purchase his own copy, I turned my copy over to him on the proviso that he pass the copy along to the next fan he came across. In this way, I hoped that my copy would pass free from fan to fan and eliminate the additional revenue that the filmakers did not deserve.

Bad thing is, though, the extras you describe rom you dvd copy sound pretty cool, so now I am inclined to seek out another copy - a thought that is giving my roids flare up even as I type this.

The only thing that was cool about that scene was that we got to see a couple of workers from Beekman's as well. We heard and spoke so much about it yet we never actually saw what went down there. I thought it fleshed out Ben's story a little.

lol this sounds like a laxitive commercial!

but ive seen the movie so i understand your pain my friend!

I hate to admit this but i think it would have been cool to recreate the scene Ben describes of his in counter @ beakman's dinner that would have been cool!

Instead of that Anton Levy looking queer and that opening bullshiit scene, i mean Hinzman didnt look like no dam killer, look more to me like someones grandpa that couldnt get it up!

And finally if anyone is ever feeling constapated just watch the last new scene of really bad acting that will give anyone the shiits for days!

p.s. i hope 1 day Russo or Streiner reads these blogs and know what a bunch of hacks they are,,,long live GAR the real visionary!!!

That's exactly what I mean dude. We've heard countless stories and even seen comic book prequels regarding the events at Beekman's diner Yet never actually seen it on film. What a collective hard on that would give the folks (male and female) at this Place !!

I agree with you. They could have found a suitable body double for Duane Jones and with a bit of creative camerawork and editing, fleshed out the Beekman's diner scene to be shown in flashback while Ben narrates.

The Beekman's diner ghouls look ridiculous and out of place in the context of NIGHT. There was no point in utilizing 90s prosthetic make-up techniques to show torn-up faces, etc. when there is nothing like that in the original film. Bill Hinzman said that he didn't understand why they would use appliances on his face to make him look thinner.

Well, while you guys are the undisputed experts on these matters I do recall from Ben's story him saying that the place was crawling with ghouls, good old boys shooting up the place and a rather big explosion.

Perhaps the combination of all three caused the mutilations we saw. Wouldn't it be nice for it to be on film to back it up though?

Actually, according to Ben's story in the film, everyone was killed in the area of Beekman's Diner except himself, which is why he hightailed it out of there in the pick-up truck. It helps to explain his hatred for those "damn things" somewhat.

Ben also doesn't say for certain that the gasoline truck exploded ("I didn't know if the truck was going to explode or what, but I could still hear the man... screaming.") I would have had no problem with the filmmakers showing grotesquely burned and mutilated ghouls, but they should have used the same make-up techniques as when they initially made the film to pull it off.

Me and philly had a thread about this a while back and we came to the consensus that eyewitness testimony being as unreliable as it is due to various factors, such as the stress of the situation, we have to take Ben's account with a grain of salt. How does he know there weren't any survivors?

Now that I think about it, you're totally right about him not knowing if the truck was going to blow.

But thinking about the rest of the series and how zombies show up with mutilated faces, the first thought that pops into my mind is how they got to be that way. Did it happen in the struggle for survival while they were alive? Did a ghoul do that to them? Or, did a human do that to them when they already a ghoul?

Any number of factors could explain why the, no doubt "fresh", ghouls shambling down the road got to be that way.

I'm not mad though. It just gives us ammo for debate.

But ya, they definitely should have used the make up techniques of the original to try and blend it in as seemlessly as possible. But it's Russo, so what are ya gonna do right?

If you see it for a couple of bucks then I think it'll be worth it for the featurette, even though the film itself isn't worth a single cent. The photo gallery is alright too.

Actually, I forgot to mention another reason why I hate NOTLD30. In England we had a 4-disc boxed set released in 2002 called Trilogy Of The Dead. It's a decent package with Night, Dawn, Day (with extras) and a bonus disc with Document Of The Dead and the NOTLD 25th anniversary doc.

So I get back home with my copy, rubbing my hands in excitement as I shove disc one in the player. It's then I find out that the version of Night is NOTLD30. What the f**k? Whoever was in charge of the package obviously had no clue because if they did, they would not have included that pile of shit. In fact, if it wasn't for Document and the Night doc (which I didn't own on DVD at that point) I would've probably taken it back to the store.

This is a huge shitfest. I've only seen it once but that was enough...although I had it on DVD two different times. My second DVD was an attempt to watch it again but I just couldn't bring myself to do so. I traded it off eventually.

Strange. We have that exact same box in Sweden. I got it, infact. It's the one with the Zombie hand up front, right? Coming out of the ground? If so, our version of Night is the good ol' classic.

But on our Bonus Disc of the Dead (woooo, scary!) we get Document of the Dead and the Argento Cut of Dawn. No Night 25th doc. Which sucks, because I tried watching the Argento cut the other week and the transfer is so horrible that you just can't help but thinking "I could be watching this film in much better quality if I just change the disc...".
