Not im my reality. A dead millionaire can have a kickass tomb to house his coffin for the rest of the time the world spins. A poor man, gets a wooden box, some cheap dirt, and possibly not even a gravestone.

But who is that for? Certainly not the dead guy. Don't get me started on the funeral industry. ( No offense Yojimbo ) The dude is dead. Yet people are convinced that iot's necessary to spend thousands of dollars, in many cases that they don't have, all for what? So they can feel better not the dead dude.

I once told my family to throw me in a homemade wooden box and then throw it in a hole. I'll be dead. I won't care.

I'm sure there's actually federal requirements when it comes to coffins and such, though.

No offense taken, Darth. Funerals are for the comfort of the living, not the deceased.

A cardboard casket, cremation and then scattering at sea is all that I want, though you or anyone else are welcome to solid gold caskets, a dove released at the burial, bagpipes and a motorized escort and horse drawn hearse.

Like the Wedding Industry, the Funeral Industry has become big business, and unfortuantely has become dominated by conglomerates who don't give a rat's ass about "dignity" and approach each bereaved family member as if they were selling them a used car. Herein lies the issue where folks get taken advantage of, and this is truly sad.

My advice as a funeral director: choose a small, family owned funeral home and put together a will which will give specific instructions to your family as to what you want and instruct your family to go no further than what you want, and you will be fine. Stay away from the conglomerates!

Also, a side note: Bassman mentioned about the laws governing dispostion: these regulations do not come from the federal level and each state in the USA has it's individual guidelines for human remains. Some states, like Hawaii for example, are pretty laid back with regulations while others, like California where I practice, are highly regulated, nearly to the point of overregulation. I know, for example. that there are some states that require a certain minimum standard for a casket burial, whereas there are other states that do not require a casket in any way for burial.
