I guess this is all because of the annoyance these things created at that recent soccer game? Heard something about it on the news, but I don't follow soccer...

I don't either, but some people here at work have been listening to the streaming broadcast and it always sounds like there's about 5 million angry hornets in the background!

Those things have got to be annoying as shit if you're there in the middle of it.

I'm also fed up with the vuvuzela thing - it's an annoying noise, and in that sort of situation, it's clearly detrimental to your aural health.

I'm also fed up of - as soon as anyone criticises or says "those things suck", they get labelled as a racist, or they get smacked down with "oh it's their culture, you're being a bigot" or something.

Their 'culture' or not, it's FUCKING ANNOYING. Feel free, people of the world, to find things in British culture that are annoying (there's things I myself could list), but why should criticism of South African culture (or anything else - politics especially) be off limits? The tut-tut finger-wagging of champagne socialists over South Africa really irks me - just because it's S.A. it doesn't mean they aren't incapable of making a bloody annoying racket with stupid plastic horns that drown out everyone else's "culture" - i.e. singing crowds from other countries trying to cheer on their team.

I fucking hate football and I've not been watching any of it, but the few seconds here and there of those fucking trumpets has made me hate them (the trumpets) for a lifetime.

Like they said on Mock The Week last night - now you know how annoying it is to give a trumpet to a toddler as a present.

haha - innit just - hypocrites basically.

The bagpipes can sound terrible in the wrong hands and the wrong setting ... and if you're too close to them ... but in the right setting, played by someone with skill, and at an appropriate ear-friendly distance (or on TV/in a movie), then they can be really good - plus, they're a musical instrument, not just a one-tone (fuck-off-loud) annoying plastic trumpet belched into by a bunch of drunken footie fans.

My girlfriend's family live out in SA and we go there every year for Christmas...it's a weird place, we stay right in Jo-burg, and we spent time around the towns of Nelspruit, Hectorspruit and went past the stadium when it was being built.

I agree with what you're saying and the annoying sound may indeed be part of their culture but to say that you don't agree with it would be comparable to your right to say that you disagree with certain culture's treatment of women, or gay people, except its on a much less emotionally charged level - why should it be a problem? You're blatantly allowed to look at another culture and compared with your own disagree or agree with the ethos - what sets you apart from a bigot is that you're not blanketing your opinion and making it a personal attack...it's just an opinion, like "I don't like the colour blue"....

These people you talk of, champagne socialists, they sound scary - in my opinion and even with my fairly big experience of south africa (right in the heart of where all the troubles are), I have only ever met people who don't have a clue what it's like out there, or have indeed lived there are can see what the real issues are. I can, and it's really not a pretty place when you boil it down. Post apartheid and ultimately, there's a really long way to go over there and it's very saddening.

yeah that's basically it really - people are likely to blur things like this and especially when it comes to South Africa - to say race is a prominent issue would be understating it - it sets people off and there's a massive guilt complex from certain sides, let's face it. People aren't going to drop it, but as usual the answer isn't being ignorance like the people you mention but to just be balanced about the facts...

    Symph - interesting post.

A large chunk of my family live in S.A. so they - like the people in your circle - know exactly what it's like to live there. How everything's become ghetto-ised, how areas that were once pleasant and vibrant in the 1970s are now over-run at best, and run-down, drugged-out, violent-crime-fuelled shitholes.

We hear quite frequently about the nonsense that goes on over there and we just can't believe it, so yeah, it really is offensive when some pontificating champagne socialist who doesn't live in S.A. (and likely has never been there) gets on their white guilt soap box and bemoans anyone who criticises the nation or faces up to the realities going on in Africa now - realities that have been in place for a long time now, and yet things aren't getting better in many respects, they're getting worse.

It's not about skin colour, it's about competent government. There was clearly a big problem before that needed rebalancing, but there's an equally big problem(s) now and to turn a blind eye to it like these guilt-trippers do is just insane and does nobody any good.

    Incredible, really, isn't it?

So it's even more insulting when, again with the champagne socialists, get on their buggered-out-from-overuse soap boxes once more to decry anyone who dares to criticise a bunch of footie fans incessantly blowing an annoying plastic trumpet.

Measured and appropriate trumpet blowing would be okay - like if they score a goal, and when the team comes on and goes off - fine - but that constant foghorn din is just stupid and dangerous for people's hearing. If it was a bunch of white England fans then the champagne socialists would be all over it with their pontificating hypocrisy, but because it's black people - and what's more - black people from South Africa - then oh no no, how DARE anyone level a bit of criticism at them!

People are people, we're all walking around on two legs operating two hands with two thumbs. We all have flesh and bone and organs ... why does race continue to be such a big deal? It makes sense that racists consider it a big deal ... cos, you know, they're racists ... but when it comes to everyone-but-racists, why do pontificators always make it such a huge fucking deal ... then again, these are the same people who invented "positive discrimination" ... so common ruddy sense and fairness never were concepts they understood in the first place.

In short ... good post, Symph.
