    "American Psycho Musical"?! WHAT?!

    Source: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/m...o4DzxAV3VlSFAP

    Text from the link:

Move over, Sweeney Todd -- another singing psycho is nearing his Broadway debut.

The tale of Patrick Bateman -- a fictional Wall Street banker obsessed with designer clothes, Phil Collins, rape and murder -- is going to drench the Great White Way in blood in "American Psycho: The Musical," producers of the show told The Post.

"Think about Malcolm McDowell singing songs during 'A Clockwork Orange.' He sang 'Singing in the Rain,' " said Duncan Sheik, the new show's composer, comparing his musical to a brutal attack scene in the 1971 film.

The musical has been in development since 2008, when producers David Johnson, Jesse Singer, Nate Bolotin and Aaron Ray bought the rights to adapt the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel, which was made into a 2000 film starring Christian Bale.

Sheik, who won a Grammy and two Tonys for writing the songs in the Broadway hit "Spring Awakening," and playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa signed on in February and have completed the first act, with a full draft expected by early next year.

"There are murders, and they are on stage in full view of the audience," Aguirre-Sacasa said. "An ax and a chef's knife will be used. I think there's going to be a lot of blood."

Giving The Post an exclusive peek at the play, Aguirre-Sacasa listed a few scenes from the novel that he hopes to include:

    * Bateman lures business associate Paul Owen back to his Manhattan apartment. Bateman puts on a raincoat so his designer suit doesn't get bloody and hacks up Owen with an ax.

    * He bumps into "Tom Cruise" in the elevator of the Upper West Side building where they both live. Bateman refers to Cruise's film "Cocktail" as "Bartender." Cruise corrects him and points out that his nose is bleeding.

    * Bateman and his yuppie friends compare business cards at a swanky Upper East Side restaurant. Noting his peers' classier cards, Bateman becomes so jealous he finds it hard to breathe.

When asked who the play might appeal to, Sheik replied, "Obviously, it's not for the people who want to see 'Elf.' "

    I'm speechless...

This show became instant failure when Huey Lewis wasn't signed on to do the score.

I want to know if they're going to model this musical after the movie or the book.

If it's the book, I can't wait to see how they handle certain things like Patrick making necklaces out of certain female body parts.

I still don't see how this is going to work, but then again, I never thought Spiderman could be turned into a musical/play and they're already doing that.

**edited to add: it must be the book. The scene with Tom Cruise in the elevator was only in the book. Oh, this could get real interesting.

    an american psycho musical?

wow, that's amazing. in a horribly bad way, i predict.

you never know, could be a blast....they do have a great novel to base it off of, but i doubt most audiences are up for that sort of thing.

and while i really enjoyed the film and how well bale captured the essence of bateman, i wish they'd stuck to the book a bit more, dropped some of the other big-name actors (reese and jared, primarily), and gone balls-to-the-wall with a movie that didn't even bother with the MPAA and all their bullshit. not that i'm into torture porn (like the saw films), but some scenes (like the rat, the things he keeps in his locker at the health club, the visit from his ex, eating people) that would've been very interesting to see bale totally immersed in.

    Best line of the film.

I've always been fond of "You're a fucking ugly bitch. I want to stab you to death....and then play around with your blood." I use that one quite often.

"I like to dissect girls. Did you know I'm utterly insane?"

I forgot about this - probably one of the funniest moments of the film for me:

"Harold, it's Bateman, Patrick Bateman. You're my lawyer so I think you should know: I've killed a lot of people. Some girls in the apartment uptown uh, some homeless people maybe 5 or 10, ummm an NYU girl I met in Central Park. I left her in a parking lot behind some donut shop. I killed Bethany, my old girlfriend, with a nail gun, and some man, uhh, some old faggot with a dog last week. I killed another girl with a chainsaw, I had to, she almost got away and uhh someone else there I can't remember maybe a model, but she's dead too. And Paul Allen. I killed Paul Allen with an axe in the face! His body is dissolving in a bathtub in Hell's Kitchen. I don't want to leave anything out here. I guess I've killed maybe 20 people, maybe 40. I have tapes of a lot of it, uhh some of the girls have seen the tapes. I even, um... I ate some of their brains, and I tried to cook a little. Tonight I, uh, I just had to kill a LOT of people. And I'm not sure I'm gonna get away with it this time. I guess I'll uh, I mean, ah, I guess I'm a pretty uh, I mean I guess I'm a pretty sick guy. So, if you get back tomorrow, I may show up at Harry's Bar, so you know, keep your eyes open."

    CLASSIC!

    Agreed

However, I would like to go see this musical. I mean if they can make a musical out of The Evil Dead, then why not American Psycho?

Although HL&TN aren't scoring it, they better play Hip To Be Squared in the show

...because American Psycho (the book) is a thousand times more sadistic than The Evil Dead could ever hope to be.

my fave line from mr. bateman is when he calls the escort service and requests a blonde. while the gal who shows up is attractive, she's not exactly what he ordered:

    "not quite blonde, are we?"
