    Ralph McQuarrie, the artist who helped George Lucas bring Stars Wars to the big screen, has died aged 82.

    Sad, sad news...Star Wars was the defining moment of my childhood...you can't show a 5 year old that movie and not have him changed forever (I think I speak for a generation when saying that). Ralph's concept and designs were a huge part of the movies visual look...still beautiful to look at today.

    just read this last night after my brothers and i returned from taking my nephew to see the phantom menace in 3d.

    i've had several desktop wallpapers over the years of mcquarrie's work, and it's amazing how instantly recognizable his art was, as even casual star wars fans would say something along the lines of "wow, that's the coolest picture of darth vader! where's that from?"

    his work transcends generations, and will likely be appreciated for decades to come.

    RIP.
