    "The Mummy" reboot (film)

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2...metheus-reboot

Universal Pictures has tapped "Prometheus" scribe Jon Spaihts to pen a reboot of "The Mummy" franchise, which Sean Daniel will return to produce.

Stephen Sommers' 1999 take on "The Mummy," which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, grossed $415 million worldwide. A 2004 sequel grossed $433 worldwide and Rob Cohen's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" took in $401 million worldwide, indicating there's still plenty of interest in the franchise.

"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before," said Spaihts.

Jeffrey Kirschenbaum is overseeing the project for Universal.
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Hrmmm...

I admit I liked the first one (pulpishly good), but after that it was all dreck. Never even saw the third one.

I'd probably be willing to check it out on Netflix sometime or another - as long as Brendan Fraser is not in it. Can't stand the guy, if I see he's in a film it's an instant "no thanks" from me. The only exception I've made to this rule he's in a Michael Keaton film and that's because, well, the addition of Michael Keaton to any film truly does make up for the shitty nature of any other terrible actor.

As long as mediocre to bad films make a lot of money, there will always be sequels. ALWAYS. Case in point:

Oh my lawd, that looks horrible:

    Kimbo Slice
    Ron Perlman
    Billy Zane

Yet none of the above are actually listed as stars of the film (listed 'stars' are Dave Bautista, Bostin Christopher & Tanapol Chuksrida).

So, what this and most of the other movies coming out boils down to is this: Hollywood just wants us to pay to re-watch all the movies we already saw 5-15 years ago, but this time it's better because it has a slightly different story with (slightly) different actors.

    Yeah, makes sense! RIGHT ON!

Lou, read some Joseph Campbell and find your bliss. Or is that just a myth?

Damn, the film industry is at a low point right now.

The Mummy from 1999 was a good adventure flick. Can't we just let that one rest and let it turn into somewhat of a classic?

The Scorpion King 3 was filled with intense action and horrible acting. I swear in several scenes you heard the actors talking, but their mouths were not moving. I also saw a security camera in another scene. Ron Pearlman proves his worth by being a king gone insane. I couldn't tell which country they were in. They moved from Africa to Thailand to China when in the story it was clear that the setting was two neighboring countries. And to top it all off, the movie blatantly leaves the ending open to assume there will be a sequel.

i'm glad that i'm not the only one that thinks "rebooting" a movie made in 1999 borders upon sheer lunacy.

what in the fook? the only way to go is to make a dark, creepy horror flick; hopefully without the torture porn angle that seemingly every other "horror" film of today employs. is that what moviegoers of today really want to see? people subjected to horrendous suffering and torment under the guise of "entertainment." i don't get it and never will.

the scorpion king "movies" do not even merit discussion.

Spider Man was released in 2002, and we've got a 'reboot' this year!

This is one reboot that I support. The Brendan Frasier films were horrible. I still can't believe I sat through all three of them. Thankfully I was wise enough to avoid the multiple Scorpian King spinoffs...

Hopefully this can be good. Although rare, occasionally reboots can rise above what has come before(Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Star Trek, etc.)
