What on earth is up with India and all this mad raping?

So we had the huge case recently where that poor student was basically raped to death using iron bars etc etc. Now we have this one - http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...?homepage=true

Angry protests spilled onto the streets of the Capital on Friday over the alleged insensitivity and inaction of the Delhi Police in handling the rape of a five-year-old girl, whose condition continues to be critical at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here.

After the girl was abducted, she was brutalised, subjected to unnatural sex and kept in confinement for over two days at Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi.

    ...

Doctors at the Swami Dayanand Hospital said the victim had superficial injuries near the lips and cheek. There was a tear in the vagina and rectum. While operating on her, the doctors found three candles and a hair-oil bottle inserted inside her, which had led to an infection in the abdomen.

    Sentenced to hang!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/14/wo...ndia.html?_r=0

Four men convicted of a brutal gang rape were sentenced Friday to die by hanging, a decision that met with grim satisfaction from the victim’s parents and triumphant cheers from the crowd outside the courthouse, where some held up pictures of bodies in nooses.

The four men – a fruit vendor, a bus attendant, a gym handyman and an unemployed man – were found guilty on Tuesday of raping a young woman on a moving bus last December, penetrating her with a metal rod and inflicting grave internal injuries, then dumping her out on the roadside.

    No loss.

There are some parts of Indian society, though, that have an appalling attitude towards women.

Reminds me of the story from the British colonial era, when a bunch of Hindu priests complained about the British trying to ban the practice of suttee/sati (when a widow is burned alive on her husband's funeral pyre). General Sir Charles James Napier, then British Army Commander-in-Chief in India, responded:

Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs.

And this mad trend continues! Raped by two different groups in one night! - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-25527401

She was visiting friends in Pondicherry when she was abducted by three men and raped by one of them, officials say.

She found her friends after that ordeal but they were all confronted by another group of men who singled her out and gang-raped her, according to police.
