    Escape From Alcatraz - 10/10

A third viewing. Each time I watch it it gets better. This time around I saw so many links between it and The Shawshank Redemption (another superb prison movie).

    The Thing

Okay, so technically I didn't watch it yet again (for the umpteenth time), but I saw skimming the channels and landed on it and watched for a while. One thing that I noticed about it, that I hadn't consciously clocked before, were the number of shots of people sitting with their backs turned to an open door. Suddenly I realised how much of a sense of unease that image conveys.

    It's been a few.

Hour of the Wolf, 3 of 5. Bergman isn't quite my tempo.

Queimada, 4 of 5. Italian Epic and tragic tale about the rise and fall of a freedom fighter in the creation of an (in this case) english banana republic. Civilization belongs to the white man.

Nightmare City, 4 of 5. The Arrow BluRay. Awesome stuff.

Star Trek - The Motion Picture Just rewatching classics. I really enjoy this one, but boy is it slooooow.

Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan See above, except the slow part.

Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, A japanese "biopic" of Yamamoto. Pretty sub standard. Japanese acting is considered overacting in all other corners of the world. I've yet to see a single japanese historical film that isn't a clichériddled mess.

Near Dark, Bill Paxton overacts. 3/5 for visuals and being somewhat of an interesting take on vampires.

AvP2, 2/5. Looks like the OC.

What have they done to your daughters?, Giallo with some detective elements. The killer is clad in a biker getup and smashes people with a meat cleaver. I enjoyed it a lot, 4/5.

A Lizard in a Womans Skin, I know it's a classic but it's just a bit too trippy for me. Besides all that, there isn't really a whole lot of giallo in this giallo but there's definetly some crazy stuff in here. Only two murders, of which one happens off screen and another happens in a dream sequence. 2/5

Slaughter Hotel, Klaus Kinski plays the barely present protagonist in this giallo which isn't set at a Hotel at all. The italian title does not mention a hotel either, but is more accurately translated to "The Beast kills in cold blood". Anyway, Kinski is a psychiatrist at a resting home for suffering beautiful 20's-something women. Most of the running time consists of sleaze and every night a black clad killer waltzes in through the unlocked basement door, makes a pit stop at the mandatory medieval armoury, picks a weapon and then kills one of the patients. Incredibly weird film that plays more like a porno with a killer element, than a killer film with a sex element. Also features a heavy dose of trippy flashbacks and weird angles. It's... really weird.

Knife of Ice, Umberto Lenzi directs this rather straightforward crime story about a series of murders that plagues a mute girl and her immediate family. A few bonkers things happens: In the latter half of the film one of the characters references something that happened just prior to the opening of the film - suggesting that it was 2 days ago. This means that 3 characters have been murdered - and 3 funerals held - in just two days. Another thing is a scene that opens with a close up of a car door which the love interest opens - then immediately closes... And the scene continues as if the car itself is irrelevant. I'm not sure wether they're going somewhere or have just arrived.

    1) Which print did you watch? I hear there's two prints - one that's the pin sharp restoration from the original, but damaged, elements, and another that is undamaged but lacks clarity. It's a fun flick and pretty bonkers in that typically brash Lenzi way.

    2) Two out of Five?! How generous! That movie was pure and rancid garbage, and it was incredible how badly they messed up the whole thing - and you can't see a damn thing it's so dark! What a piss take of a movie it is.

    3) One of my favourite giallos!

    4) I keep hearing about how great that movie is, how it's a classic etc, but I haven't got around to it. Guess it's not as great as has been claimed. However, I recently watched "Don't Torture A Duckling" and thought it was rather good (another early 70s giallo from Fulci). The only downside was I knew who the killer was from the get-go after it was spoiled in a supplemental booklet in an Arrow Video release of some sort a while back IIRC.

    5) 88 Films are putting a new release of that out soon (it's never been out in the UK, as far as I know) under the more appropriate 'Cold Blood' title. I'm looking forward to checking that one out some time.

Don't Torture a Duckling I found to be a far superior giallo over Lizard. Lizard is a slightly crazier version of Death Walks at Midnight, which I believe you've seen. It has similar plot setups. There's some eerie scenes in Lizard including a chase set in an seemingly abandoned psychiatric ward. Overall I found it to be a bit too unbloody for my giallo tastes, but maybe the trippy dreams make up for that.

As for Nightmare City, I watched the crisp version but with deteriorated coloring. No point in watching a blu ray if you can't see the crispness...

    1) Aye, seen both the 'Death Walks' movies. I liked them - seen better, but also seen worse. I know what you mean, a giallo without a decent helping of murder and mayhem can be a bit underwhelming unless you get sucked into the story/characters/mise-en-scene of it all.

    2) Quite right! How are the extra features, (if you've had a chance to view them)? I'm pondering a purchase of it at some point to upgrade from my R1 Anchor Bay (IIRC) DVD copy.

Ive seen Nightmare City and while I didn't like it as much as Zombie and Hell of the Living Dead it was still entertaining. I liked how the zombies all used weapons for once but the way they killed all the random female victims by ripping their tops off and mutilating their boobs was kind of awkward...

    X-Men: Apocalypse - 6/10

I'd got the impression this was a complete balls up from critical rumblings online, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I'd started to assume it was. Sure, there are various issues with it - the cast is far too large so you end up with certain characters having three fifths of sod all to do (Psylocke pretty much stands in the background quietly until the final act), and the climax uses too many effects and feels a bit bloated, but otherwise I still rather enjoyed it. The sequence when some of them exit a showing of Return of the Jedi talking about how 'the third one is always the worst' rather tempts fate, but it's safe to say that Apocalypse shits all over X-Men 3.

The Quicksilver sequence was lots of fun, although the second time around you don't get the sense of surprise you did when it was first done, and generally it was quite entertaining. The deeper it got into the movie the more the balance shifted from plot to effects, but even in the big battle they were able to weave in some character moments. And, even in a weaker film, the X-Men franchise still has real-world relevance. But, yeah, the main issue was the unwieldy nature - so many characters, not enough time for them all - plus various bits that didn't really make much sense, or were confusing as all get out (the X-Men timeline is all over the ruddy shop at this point). To be honest, though, it does feel a bit superfluous after Days Of Future Past tied things up very nicely...

"Logan" was decidedly superior, mind you.

Yeah, the Italians seemed to have a bit of an obsession with that in some of their sleazier exploitation movies, such as "Emanuelle and The Last Cannibals". Then again, they also had a bit of an obsession with lopping of guys' old chaps - "Emanuelle and The Last Cannibals" again, as well as "Cannibal Ferox" both spring to mind (the latter of which also had the infamous 'meat hooks in the boobs' sequence). You could say that D'Amato and Lenzi were equal opportunity manglers of private parts.

It must have been some kind of fetish that was somewhat popular at the time kinda like Quentin Tarantino and his foot thing...

In this regard nothing tops the outrageousness of the incestuous zombified creepy pervert son bites his own mother's nipple off scene in Bianchi's Nights of Terror (a.k.a. Burial Ground)

Logan - Jackman wanted to go out playing Wolverine on a high note and he f*ckin nailed it! This isn't your usual kid-friendly X-Men, of course. 9/10

Gold - Matthew McConaughey trying so desperately hard for an Oscar win. Still, it's not a horrible "based on true events" flick. 6/10

Kong: Skull Island - Meh. Not horrible, but also nothing special. They get points for trying something new with the King of apes, at least. 6/10

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return - After taking a week and a half or so to go through all of the new episodes, I couldn't be happier with this fan-funded revival of this classic and hilarious series from my younger days. Everything about it clicked perfectly and I hope with it's new home on Netflix, it can continue to crank out new entries for many more spaghetti moons to come. 10/10

Yeah the new MST3K is great I wish I had the time to watch all the new episodes (ive seen two and a half so far). I also hope they'll add more of the old episodes on Netflix I would like to see them riff more of my favorites like "Squirm" and the one with the guy who becomes a giant bat monster.

Re: Nightmare City, No MZ I haven't watched any of the extras yet. I've got quite a few of those old films lined up so I guess I'll have to put the extras off for a later date.

    Anyway...

Salt of the Earth, "The only blacklisted american film". A pinko propaganda piece about a group of mexican miners who go on strike for "equal rights". Disgusting! Who do they think they are! Americans?
Anyway, it's an alright film. But a Behind the Scenes film would be more interesting (and I believe there is one, actually)

Cannibal Holocast, Shameless BluRay release. It offers the option of viewing a new, alternate cut by Deodato. It tones down the animal violence quite a bit which I personally don't really mind but in the end I kinda feel like this new cut is more the result of Deodato second guessing himself years after all the controversy. The original cut (also included on the BluRay) is superior. Partly because the new digital "scratch marks" and stuff they've used to cover up the gory animal deaths just don't look very good at all.
Anyway great film. But boy is it gruesome...

    Do what? Why do that?
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
