George Romero and zombies, a match made in horror heaven, will be reunited in a new project.
Called "George Romero's Diary of the Dead," it will start shooting in Toronto in October, executive producer John Harrison said yesterday, confirming a report in Variety.
Pittsburgh native Harrison, a producer, writer and director who played the "Screwdriver Zombie" in "Dawn of the Dead" and has known Romero for years, said they once talked about "Diary" as a TV series, and it morphed into a theatrical feature. "The script is wonderful," he said, and it reflects Romero's trademark humor and social commentary.
"He is going back to the origins of the mythology, so this is not a post-apocalyptic vision of the world, it's happening right now, today. ... It's a perfect tale of zombies in this current world, this current climate," with students wielding digital cameras and lots of references to downloading, podcasting and cell phones.
Harrison said economics are driving the low-budget movie to Canada but it will be set in the United States and have lots of references to Pennsylvania as an "homage to our stomping grounds."
