What is the purpose of changing the web address to the forum?

I know it is a stupid question but I just curious

When we first log on we get this message:

"The old address for the forums is now redundent. It should be automatically remapped to the correct new address (forum.homepageofthedead.com)."

Well, the two addresses have been living along side each other for a while (ie: you could use either).

For the past few days there's been a notice warning of the "migration", then yesterday the server was reconfigured to infact rule out the old address.

The purpose of the change is mainly cosmetic, as personally I think its better

You experiencing any problems at all?
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Well the change breaks a lot of web links. Since it's simply a DNS redirect is there any reason NOT to keep both the old and the new pointers?

Beware the beast, man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him, drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

I have problems but it is not the fault of hpotd. My employer blocks the new URL probably because it has the word "forum" in it and they have all message boards blocked. I am amazed that the old URL was not blocked.
