Well, you have to wonder if it may have actually cost less. I believe it was on the Dawn commentary that Rubenstein did, he said that even though the published figure for the cost of making Dawn was $1.5 million, that it was a lie. He said it only cost $500,000 to make Dawn, but they thought that figure sounded low and people might think it was a crappy movie if it only cost $500,000, so they made up the $1.5 mil figure to make people think more money was spent on making it than actually there was.

If I'm not mistaken, a similar trick was used for Night '90.

They started off with 12,000, and as costs compiled (marketing, prints, etc.) it totalled out at 114k.

I believe Rube said it was 625K to make Dawn. Half was put up by Dario. The other half was a compilation of investers put together by Rube.

They made Martin for 100k and said that they made it for 500k.

... all the while the real communicator the person with the thoughts to express or the idea to convey sits on the sidelines waiting for a break turning from the system disillusioned and wondering when room will be made for his contribution ...

an optimistic viewpoint however offers the hope of a complex of audio visual distribution channels which will be able to at long last to support the volume of work our frustrated creators are capable of producing provide for real free choice at the audience level accomodate the experimental without having to eliminate the traditional in order to make room ..
Inspiring words from an inspiring man. To me, these words (and the essay as a whole) serve as the creedo of the indie artist. I tip my hat.
