Capt , this looks like something I might be getting along w/ an xbox360 (HL2 of course) ... From what I can tell , the visual flaws are forgivable, feet of opponents high off the stairway like they are floating , shoddy motion capture . The smoothness of the gameplay looks exciting . ...The work that went into this is measurable , if it takes so long to make/render this program , its worth the fee based on what I can see and guess ... I must state , the weapons seem kick arse ! I just read another article link here , and it says the weapons wear out and must get replaced ... hmm realistic . i wonder if you can maintain weapons to keep them ? Anyway , from the screenshots , it looks very haunting . I will give it a go ... if I feel like the risk is worth it , Ill get it . But my Alienware is still in the shop , I owe over $500 to get it back for the labor on repair ... By the time I get it back , it will be obsolete , Frack! BTW , no one in the Rockville MD area ever take their pc to Hightech , they are criminals .

Hmph, one persons opinion. Here's another from a guy who has actually played it.

I got my preview copy in the mail and was obviously excited about the next generation of gaming. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a game in which you play an ex-soldier sent into Chernobyl. I quickly ripped open the box and put the cd into my PC. Quickly, I installed the game. I thought 10 cds worth of gaming goodness must be good! I was in for a shock...

The graphics were a major let down. Even on my mammoth PC the game crawled to a shuffle when more than 1 enemy was on screen. When the game isn't stumbling along it looks gorgous though! Each frame is like a photograph, so it sometimes plays as a slide-show of shooting monsters. I was impressed by this new take on the next generation shooter market and am sure it will be a big hit.

The sound is something that requires a bit of imagination though. They have the same gun shooting sound for every single gun. That's 7 guns with the same noise! The footstep sound is also the same for everything, so sometimes the game can get a bit confusing. I was a bit worried by the lack of ambient noises and music when I realized what the developers were trying to do. Silence is sometimes the most scariest sound! There's nothing like creeping through a silent jungle when you hear foot-steps. Is it an alien? Or is it a giant robot?!

There are several bad things about the game, but this is mostly the multiplayer. The game came with a single multiplayer map, but I didn't have anyone to play with. After a few rounds of walking around an empty map with some crates in I had gotten bored. I'm hoping the multiplayer is expanded on in the future, hopefully through mods or other players.

In the end stalker is a solid game with different degrees of gameplay. Sometimes it fun, sometimes is not. The last level took me at least 10 tries to escort your friend out of the underwater maze before the timer ran out. The ending also leaves something to be desired as it just says 'You have won the game, press ok to continue' and takes you back to the main menu.
    Sounds okay, but nothing legendary.

Who posted that review, where did you find it and etc-pie.

Of course multiplayer is going to be boring if you're playing it on your lonesome, geez! I don't know what copy this guy was playing, because the copies sent out were Betas I believe, and from his piss poor description it doesn't sound like anything that was sent out to the 'key reviewing players' so-to-speak.

That 'preview' smells rather fishy to me.

I got no idea who wrote the review, probably some dips**t. I have absolutely no idea what site it came from either. When I searched for a negative review, I just put the words 'S.T.A.L.K.E.R.' and 'crap' in the Google search engine.

That cannot be right! There's no way this can be true!?

The previews would have been all over something like this!
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. lol Capn.

Neil, damn straight, that 'preview' sounds like complete ass. Even from the freakin' preview videos online the guns all have different sounds. And damn straight, if it was actually crap all the previews would have been all over it with gay abandon. The worst thing pointed out in the previews are the occasional scripting error or crash to desktop, but then again, they are playing on a pre-Alpha build of the game.

There's a lot of STALKER playa-haters out there, I've seen it for a couple of years now since it missed it's original date, the playa-hatin' has been growing, and it's usually just people saying "ah f*ck that" based on absolutely no facts or proper ideas ... basically, the sort of people that think the 9/11 conspiracies are true.

Daaaaaamn, we're talking 4 weeks and a day until it comes out! ... and if it gets posted early to me I might be playing it earlier ... or at least on time, if I have to wait till the following Tuesday/Wednesday I'll be sat there so frustrated ... ... I'll just have to bide my time by playing with myself, ha!

    ha-ha!

Guess who nabbed a copy of the STALKER Multiplayer Beta demo?

I downloaded it today and whacked it on my computer, now there's no actual servers for it (or maybe there is one, but I don't play online anyway), I just wanted to give it a test and see how it worked on my rig - and the news is good, it's workin' reet nice on HIGH settings as well.

The frame rate is smooth (aside from some moments when the frame rate goes kinda wiggy, but that's an engine/beta issue). The weapons all have different sounds (), the graphics look rather spiffing (definitely Half Life 2 era, but the over all realism is far better than HL2, it's not about swank, it's about realism).

The weapons weren't all available, but the ones that were, were pretty nifty. The SA-80 is particularly swish, I'd recommend that one for general over all use as it has a scope and is nice and accurate I found.

The audio is excellent, it's really spooky to go wandering around, it's the sort of sound design that fits the content like a glove, you go walking around and you don't notice the changes, it's subtle. And believe me, when a far-off howl from some monster rings out, you'll get a shiver down your spine. The weather is cool, it changes subtly, you get random leaf-filled gusts of wind from time-to-time when you're wandering around and it pisses it down with rain when it's stormy - you even see the spots of rain dampen the ground. The lightening is particularly cool (with excellent thunder), the light from the flash falls just right and really makes the already desolate landscape seem far scarier.

Clearly some things were disabled in this MP beta, there wasn't any ragdoll physics going on with things like doors or boxes and such, and the feel of your man's movement wasn't sh*t-hot, but I've played worse feeling FPS games most definitely, but you get used to it after a while (although I don't like the toggle-style sprinting).

Overall, it runs smooth, it looks great, it's creepy as all hell - I think it's gonna be a fun game.

Plus it's fun to kill your Stalker, sick I know, but walking into an anomoly deliberately is funny, especially when you get tossed around like a, well, ragdoll, and then your corpse gets levitated up into the air and blown apart - and you can catch radiation poisoning (I did it by standing next to a truck - an icon will display and go red when you're in deep trouble).

You can also get a detector thing, which cracks/beeps when an anomoly is near or you're near radiation - so that's really atmospheric. Finally, this MP beta was stable, I didn't have any crashes (just don't try and start a "new game" lol, because this is a multiplayer beta after all).

I certainly look forward to playing the proper game.

    *additional*

Also, the fact you have a shadow is a nice touch, yes it's occasionally been done before, but it's a very rare thing in FPS games. Also, the way you run seems more human, especially when strafing, you feel your legs moving and can see it in a subtle wobble as your legs move ... I thought that's a nice touch - it takes a bit of getting used to, especially when you're used to the likes of Doom 3 when it's all rather smooth, or Half Life 2 when it's even smoother ... in fact, a gripe about HL2 is the skiddy nature of Gordon's feet, he'll continue forward a little even after you've taken your finger off the key.

Hmmm ... I can't select all the options in the video settings, some don't select or appear in drop down boxes when they should (there don't seem to be many options for a game that's scalable) ... hmmm ... hopefully it's all in-full in the final Single Player version when that slips through my door-hole in about 4 weeks.

I'm copying and pasting a future MZ review of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

What the f*ck is all this sh*t about? I pre-ordered this load of bollocks for years and this is what I get? A sub-par FPS with bland graphics! I swear the controls are as slow as an old granny wading through treacle and as for the story? Uwe Boll has written better obituaries. Truly awful. And to think I was gay for this game. Never again, that's me and gaming homosexuality over with once and for all.
