When I purchased my Sony Viao a year or so ago, I was able to get on the Internet just fine. I don't remember exactly when, but get this, I can get on the net, but no web pages would load, ever. It wasn't the time of day and server issues or anything. No page would display, just that NO PAGE DISPLAY message you get. I tried other browsers, nothing.

I came across the reason (at least I believe) on the net through another computer at my home that uses Windows ME. The computer that couldn't get on the net ran Windows XP. It seems with Win XP, Microsoft can remotely 'tell' if you are using illegal software and will purposely disabled your ability to view web pages! They do this through their Hotfixes that automatically download unless you disable them.

Problem was, Win XP on my machine came with the damn computer bought from Sony direct! It was registered to me and everything! For some stupid reason, it thinks it is illegal, at least that is my best assumption.

So, sick of using my second computer to get on the net, because it has a dark monitor I can only adjust so far and I get sick of downloading, transferring to Zip Disk and back and forth, I decided to reinstall my C Drive on the Win XP machine. I then turned off Automatic Updates.

Hurrah! It worked! I can now use my Win XP machine to get on the net. Next problem is, Internet Explorer and Paint Shop Pro X demo version crashed every five seconds. So I use Opera, which I have been using anyway because you don't get too much hacker $hit through it, and an earlier version of PSP, version 6. The only reason I have to use Internet Explorer is when I am designing web pages, because for some other reason, Opera will not display pictures on the web page stored on my machine, even though it shows pictures on a web page on the net just fine!!!!!???

Go figure?

Nope, they came with the computer pre-installed...no discs in our possession, but that's how it's usually done - even with my laptop which came from Time (now defunct - hence why it's sitting at Logiplex getting fixed after dying on its funking arse yesterday...some spyware or a virus got on there despite several layers of protection, GRRR!!!).

Now it means I'll miss this weekend's stileproject free porn bonanza! :eek:

Not because of windows xp Activation security Feachers easily circumvented. But because getting security updates is a pan in the ars. And you just can’t go without them any more.

There are so many circumventing tools out there now. Windows authentication is BS. So many people walk around it.

I just have to do a System Restore from either an earlier save point or just use the discs to completely format and restore. The discs I had to burn myself because they don't ship with discs anymore since most computers are cheap @$$holes. It told me how to do it though at least. Also, restore points won't help much if you have a virus, because it could have backed the virus up as well!

I nuked the computer back to the factory settings but that didn't help at all, it was being rather weird. The guys at the shop found a few processes that didn't need to be going, fixed some problems with the start up sequence and I think there was some virus/spyware on there that my layers of protection didn't pick up (which doesn't surprise me really - it's happened before on another computer we own).

Hopefully, unlike the other computer which got blasted by a big virus, my laptop will still behave like it always did and will still be able to deal with multi-tasking etc. Should hopefully get word from Logiplex today to let me know what's going on with it.
