Having finally seen Diary (opening day in the UK, woo, see my "*experience*" post for an explanation of, well, my experience seeing it), I got thinking about the gore in both films.

Ultimately - which film's gore do you prefer?

It's a toughie for me...Land was a slaughter-fest by comparison, the quantity was much higher (no doubt because of the budget differences of course), and it was awesome ... but what Diary had, while not as frequent, I thought stood out more.

The gags were stronger set pieces, three that really stuck out and entertained the nuts off me were:

1) Gurney zombie - surely a reference to Day of the Dead - it rolls over and sits up, it's guts falling out, but then - in a slice of comedy - falls off the gurney onto it's own spilled innards. :D

2) The Amish guy - skewers himself and the zombie attacking him from behind, through the head. Superb!

3) Final shot zombie - the one right at the end, the female zombie hung from a tree by her own hair. Her face is severed in two by a shotgun blast, the body from the nose down collapses to the floor while the eyes of the remaining bit of head (brains unaffected) look around (you could say that too is a bit of a throwback to Day of the Dead as well).

Ultimately - which film's gore do you prefer?

I had to go with "both the same", each for different reasons.

Land has much more day-style gore, while Diary has fewer, but very cool gags. So it's hard to really compare the two, imo.

Maybe I need to rewatch my DVD copy of Land, but apart from that bit in the armory with the soldiers I really don't recall much gore in Land at all, and at the time had attributed the lack of splatter to the fact that it was an R rated major release with Romero's vision diluted by interference and focus groups.

There was plenty of gore in Land, even in the R-rated version. There was more in the unrated version, but it was throughout the film far more frequently than in Diary...but Diary's gags were generally smarter, or pipped Land's just at the post for me.

Some class-act Land gore gags though, that immediately spring to mind:

1) Pulling the tongue out of the dead guy's mouth
2) Soldier has him arm chopped off and falls on his own grenade, getting blown in two
3) Nicotero getting his face pulled off
4) Cop zombie biting thingymy in the off license

Between Land and Diary, Diary comes a tiny bit further ahead, it's a photo finish though, split seconds between the two. Land has the frequency and some classic moments, but Diary has a lower frequency but almost all gore moments are superbly entertaining.

I think it's awesome there's some serious gore in cinemas at the moment, what with Diary and Rambo before it, it's been a red screen, not a silver screen, for me this past month.

Even though it was cgi aided, I really like the bit where the acid dissolved the zombie's head.

Ooh yeah, that was a good one! :)

The eye bursting was also rather gruesomely good...as well as that zombie whose head got sliced in two down the middle by the prof. :D

Diary squeezes by...

-Zombie guts falling out of the one on the gurney (caught the Day reference right away)
-Acid-to-the-head kill
-Swat(?) team member sticks assault rifle through mouth of one zombie to kill another.
-Amish sickle-through-the-face kill
-The Jason save with the zombie face-split kill
-Hanging hair zombie face blast
