Great idea, Neil.

Loved these movies growing up.

Here's a link to a list site

and another.

Some of my own favorites are 'When Worlds Collide/War of The Worlds.'(George Pal double feature)-Soylant Green-Tank Girl(Love Lori Petty and an almost unrecognizable Naomi Watts as her tech geek sidekick )-Day of The Triffids(both big screen and brilliant BBC mini-series )-The Day The Earth Caught Fire- The Crack in The World(in which nuclear testing causes the planet to literally crack in two.)-Radioactive Dreams(A Sam Spade style detective story in a post nuclear future)-Testiment(American style On The Beach tale of a small community waiting for radiation to kill them off )

the cable show "jeremiah" springs right to mind.

"the stand" miniseries.

the movie "lifeforce" has serious apocalyptic overtones to it, what with energy sucking zombies overrunning london.

But how?!?!?:stunned: It's been awhile since I've seen the flick, but I don't remember there being any mention of the end of the world. Just that there were too many criminals, so they turned New York into a prison.

gentlemen, gentlemen i suggest that we settle this escape from new york spat like rational, sane human beings. you two should fight a duel. weapons are your choice - guns, swords, knives, cat o'nine tails made from fettucini, etc. the survivor is right. simple enough.

here is a suggestion:

a post-apocalyptic film/tv show is one in which:

a. modern civilization has been destroyed.
b. a large percentage of the human population has died.
c. portrays an attempt by the remaining people to survive whatever cataclysm has happened and start anew.
d. is global in scale (with some exceptions).

"Survivors" and the 1981 "day of the triffids" DVD's are excellent, I own both series and highly recommend them, tons of atmosphere.

It's really pre-apocalyptic but the movie Last Night(i think that's what it's called) is great. Its a canadian film about everyone's last day on earth. Funny what all these people are doing when they know its all about to end.

Oh and post 800!!! I am now officially Twitching!!

Ray Bradbury wrote an interesting one on that theme in his collection, The Illustrated Man, later a movie with Claire Bloom and Rod Steiger.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064473/

One of the segments, all starring Bloom and Steiger in different parts, is about a society where the adults collectively dream about the end of the world the next day.

An episode of Night Gallery, Rod Serling's follow up to his successful Twilight Zone, had Clint Howard as a child progeny who becomes a TV celeb when his predictions start coming true. When he has an unexpected revelation about a great global change, he tells the world of it's Utopian tomorrow, but what he tells his grandfather and his handlers is quite different.

It's called 'The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes. '

3. The New Barbarians

And I bet it's cheap as chips too. For a trashy Italian take on Mad Max, it has a pretty darn good story and some bloody (but hilarious) make-up FX. 2019 and 1990 ain't too bad either.

And let's not forget Warrior Of The Lost World with Robert (The Exterminator) Ginty.

A big thumbs up for Panic in the Year Zero. :)
Excellent movie that really captures that desperate feeling and lengths people will go to vibe. May not be for everybody because of its age (1962) but its definately worth a look. Looks great in B&W widescreen as well.
All the time I was watching it I kept thinking of World War Z and the Great Panic section where everybody heads north and the struggle for survival gets desperate.

8/10 (some allowances made for its age though)

that is a great movie for sure and i think it holds up pretty well today. ray milland (who also directed it) is excellent in it, though to be honest ray milland was great in everything he ever did. he was one of the truely great actors of the mid to early late part of the 20th century.

My favorite was transmission 2. It was hilarious. As for the inconsistancy of the signals effect: I got the idea that it is possible to fight the signal(both Clark and Ben fought it), and that it worked a bit differently for everyone. Lewis's seemed to turn on and off. You could tell when the signal was kicking back in when he would start rubbing his eye and weirding out.

The Day The Earth Caught Fire (61) is a sharp short Brit disaster film which weds Nuclear Nightmare with Ecologic Disaster as similtaneous Atomic testing by the Soviets( what we old folks used the call the Russians ) and the Americans leads to the above mentioned affect.
Edward Judd(of such Sci-Fi/Horror staples as Island of The Burning Doom, First Men on The Moon )is a drunk divorced cynical(are there any of kind?)print reporter who uncovers the government conspiracy and the awful truth behind it. Leo McKern(The original Omen, LadyHawke, etc ) also stars as a dry witted Science correspondent along with lovely Janet Munro(Darby O'Gill, Disney's Swiss Family Robinson), the plucky office girl who helps our hero.
This is quite a short film, with a restrictive budget that is nevertheless used creatively to support a crisp intelligent script. It is largely folks talking about the end of the world, but what else do you expect from news people?
Classic movie.

Gas! or- How it became Necessary to Destroy The World in order to Save it.
1971, a funky Peacenik tract from the youth studio of American International Pictures and directed by one of the most prolific directors of any age, Roger Corman.

Saw this oddity on the Retroplex channel (United States cable) which deals with the post apocalyptic pilgrimage of a band of hippies and free-thinkers after a nerve agent kills off everyone over age twenty-five.
With still relatively unknown stars like Ben Vereen, Cindy Williams and Talia Shire(Tally Copolla), this mind melting counter-culture effort has it's moments, particularly when they encounter a town taken over by the school football team and it's pep-squad lackies.
Mostly though, it's a "You have to see this to believe they used to make movies like this. " experiment. Best to make it a double bill with a political tirade called "Wild in The Streets. " 1968, about a new american revolution where a cynical rock star reduces the voting age to the point where the kids can take over.

Just keeping it groovy.

Woody harrelson?

I can't believe I actually watched this series as a kid.

As the propaganda goes "When Pollution and Waste took it's toll. " a brave band of scientists went into hiding as the rest of Civilization fell apart, leaving only pockets of Humanity in existance.

Kinda vague, huh? How exactly did this destroy us?

Anyway, after some time, we don't know exactly how long, the eggheads built this travelling lab and bingo hall (OK, made up that last part.) to journey about the country and gradually return technology to the people.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127989/

The ark, equipped with defensive weapons only (including a forward lazer and these handheld light reflecting things which blinded your enemies ) was manned by a cute asian chick and two guys, oh yes the artifically enhanced talking chimp ( why, oh god, why! )

This was the 70's, with a family hour still in place and almost pristine programming for children on the weekends. The series that were on, Shazzam (or Captain Marvel ), the mighty Isis, and at nights; The Incredible Hulk(damn sweet mix of Marvel and The Fugitive ) and The Amazing Spiderman, The Man From Atlantis(OK, forget that one ) and the creme of the crop, a bionic double billing of 6 Million dollar cyborgs, Steven Austin and Jamie Summers.

But Ark II? Kinda limped along, even for kiddy TV. At least Isis was showin some gams in her mini toga along with some morals, Ark II had a talking chimp, or two if you count bearded white boy.

We also had Planet of the Apes; the series, but that's even less worth mentioned than the above mentioned Greeny tract.

Just watched, "Where Have All The People Gone".

It's a typical 1970's TV film. In fact, almost feels like a pilot episode? Would love to find out if that was the intention?

It's a reasonable watch, but it's strange how the disappearing population isn't quite explained? There's mention of a virus, but it's unclear what part that plays.

Anyway, 6/10...

Yep, that was me.

I'd been searching for another movie when that one came up, just right for our apocalyptic crew here.
I also watched Gargoyles 1972 ( not the cartoon ) with Cornell Wilde, Jennifer Salt and Bernie Casey - The Devil's Rain 1975 ( with Ernest Borgnine as The Devil, pretty fun ) and Satan's Triangle 1975 ( which I'd remembered as a lot scarier when I was a kid, but not so much now )

Next up, I'm chasing down Damnation Alley 1977 with Jan Michael Vincent and George Peppard.

Ok, classic 70s horror, now we are talking!

I remember seeing Gargoyles when I was a kid and it scared the hell out of me. I don't know if it was the gargoyles slow motion and noises they made, but it was creepy. Scott Glenn is also in it. I know for certain there was a decent remake of the movie in the 90s under another title, but I haven't been able to track that one down.

Gargoyles 1972

Damnation Alley is one of most favorite movies and was probably the inspiration for games like Fallout and Fallen Earth. It also has Jackie Earl Haley aka Kelly Leak from Bad News Bears aka Freddy Kruger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Killa Cockroaches!

DamnationAlleyMov's channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/DamnationAlleyMov/videos) has the full movie in 6 parts. There are also a bunch of other scifi gems from the 70s. Don't forget to check out another post-apoc movie called Genesis II. It features Mariette Hartley's double belly buttons and the memorable "stem" weapons. Empire of the Ants with Joan Collins is another good one.

I don't remember much about The Devil's Rain except the melty faces. Satan's Triangle doesn't ring a bell at all for me.

Another really good horror from the 70s, not necessarily apocalyptic though, is Race with the Devil 1975 with Peter Fonda, Warren Oats and Loretta Swit. Can't seem to find a full version on youtube though.

The Devil's Rain (1975 ) concerned the Prentiss family's ( Ida Lupino, William Shatner and Tom Skerritt ) age old pact with Satan, registered in a book of souls - which had been stolen from the High Priest Corbis by the wife of the first patriach Martin Fife. Centuries later, Corbis wants what's his. Oddly engaging 70's fare with John Travolta ( blink and you miss him, in one of his earliest movie roles. )

In a similar vein, Satan's Triangle ( 1975 ) ran with the 70's obessive interest in the paranormal, and in particular a patch of troublesome waters (allegedly ) off the Florida coast. In the tv movie, Doug McClure is a hotshot Coast Guard pilot in search of an SOS coming from a missing vessel. Once located, he finds a murder scene with multiple corpses and one hot survivor in Kim Novak.

I really liked this movie as a kid - now - not so much. Race With The Devil (1975 ) is still a cool flick though. Dan Curtis fav, Lara Parker ( from both Dark Shadows and a fun Night Stalker episode about witchcraft in high fashion ) in a bikini weren't bad either.

The best thing with Race with the Devil is that it can't be remade! Due to today's commications technology no amount of "big wind" is going to knock out all cell service.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker was another one of my most favorite shows. Darren McGavin's quirky Kolchak is what made the original show so much fun to watch, especially when he got into yelling matches with Mr. Vincenzo. As usual they tried to do a remake with a "young hip good looking cast" but the abomination got cancelled after only 6 shows.

Excellent thread!

I've always been a glutton for 80's apocalyptic situations. There are, of course, the commonly known ones like "The Day After" and "Threads" but I don't see too much mentioned about some of the lesser known ones but still excellent and worth mentioning - such as:

"Testament" (1983) - starring Jane Alexander and William Devane (the guy who played the mentor to Kiefer Sutherland on "24") where Alexander and her kids survive the nuclear war relatively unscathed just to see her entire world destroyed by radiation and the gradual breakdown of society. A very young Kevin Costner makes an appearance in this gem as well. The full film is available on youtube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIW8nWXTkEY&feature=related

"Miracle Mile" (1988) is another excellent gem as well where a guy (Anthony Edwards) gets a wrong phone call at a payphone outside a diner and finds out that a nuclear war is going to happen in a matter of hours. Mare Winningham and Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) both make appearances in it as well. Here's the trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWFoGrrYX6E

"Defcon 4" (1985) is a pure guilty pleasure. Here's the trailer for it:

Anyway, there are probably a ton more I could mention, but these are some of the great gems that come to my mind.

If anyone has others, please share - it's always good to discover a "lost" classic.

Watched "The Last Night" a few days ago, and although it's clunky in places, it really stuck with me for some reason...

I then watch Miracle Mile which I enjoyed, followed by Blindness.

I thougth Blindness was great, and during it I spotted a number of familiar faces from "The Last Night" in it too. eg: Don McKellar appeared in both, and even wrote both (at least the screenplay).

And Miracle Mile was a film scored by Tangerine Dream too ;)
