View Full Version : Zack and Miri Make a Porno :D

I was able to see an advance screening this past Thursday night. I won't give anything away, but I do have to say that possibly the funniest Kevin Smith movie he has made to date.
The cast was great, the jokes were constant and the dialogue was fantastic as usual. Definitely go see Zack and Miri Make a Porno when it comes out on Halloween.
As a side note, I saw the movie at the movie club I belong to. The age range of people is from 20's-80's so there is pretty much people of all ages. There is always a discussion about the movie afterward and there was not a single person who said they did not like it. The funniest comment I heard was while walking out of the theater, a woman who was probably in her mid 50's said "When they mentioned anal sex I nearly pissed myself laughing!" to her friends (whom appeared to be her age) and they all started giggling like little girls.
And another thing, the homage's to Monroeville are pretty cool. Not only were some scenes filmed at the mall, the hockey team is named "The Monroeville Zombies." Some Dawn people are also in the film, I was excited to see that.

Aye I've heard Tom Savini is in it.
I canny wait to see Zack & Miri, but I think us Brits are getting shafted till January or February FFS!
I'll have the DVD around the same time in that case!

Who all has a cameo besides Savini? Well....unless you think telling us would spoil the surprise.
I'm really looking forward to this flick. Maybe going to see it on opening day, but Halloween night sounds like a bad time to release a comedy, if you ask me.

So would you say it's a straight-up comedy or a romantic-comedy?

Glad you liked it, DeadJoans, as it allays some of the fears of this films that had crept into my head as of late. I can't help but fear the film will be stale and not that funny, but I hope I'm wrong.

I would say it is a straight up comedy with romantic comedy elements.
And there is nothing to fear about the movie, it is very funny. I hope you all go see it when it is released.
As for the other cameo that I saw it was David Early aka Mr. Berman. He isn't credited, but I am positive I saw him during the audition scene and I think I saw some other Dawn alumni in the movie, but am not positive on the others.

Just got back from seeing it. I'm sad to say that I found it very "meh". It had some funny stuff...there's no denying that, but the story and progression of the characters was very dull. I imagine Zack and Miri as a cross between any Julia Roberts/Hugh Grant/etc movie and some of Kevin Smith's vulgar writing.
With that said, i have to reinforce the fact that this film DID make me laugh. Numerous times. But the story is bad. I like just about all of Kevin Smith's work, but this is far below par. It seems like he tried for a Chasing Amy sort of story and ended up with a generic chick flick......but with nudity and harsh language.

Or maybe you should see it for yourself? :rockbrow::sneaky:
I'm gonna see it in a couple of weeks when it comes out here - thankfully we're not getting royally butt-bashed on the release date like we did with Clerks 2. I had C2 on R1 DVD before it even came out in cinemas here FFS, but Zack & Miri is sensibly just two weeks behind America-land.

Well, I highly disagree. I say you should go see it because bassman sounds like hes never seen the damn movie.
SPOILER!!!
I dont think Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant would be apart of a movie that features A guy getting **** on and scenes involving full frontal nudity. lol

Hey, sometimes people just get a bad feeling about a movie based on their previous experiences and the look of the film.
In any event, I'm kind of curious if the glowing reviews the film has gotten here is somewhat due to all the Dawn references. I say this primarily because I've noticed the film getting panned by not just critics. We'll see. I have kind of an off feeling about it, myself, and I just can't seem to shake it.

Well, I've done the online grand review tour and Zack And Miri seems to be roughly rated around 3 out of 5 stars. I do love Kevin Smith's work (especially Clerks and Chasing Amy) but I'll probably just get this on DVD to be honest.

Well if you got some Hugh Grant comedy out of this movie, you must have a seriouly backwards way of thinking.

Go see it and make a judgement for yourself. Whats good to you, may not be good to "The Critics". All of Romero's Dead movies were panned by critics but im sure you have the opposite opinion right?

Go back and re-read. I said the love story is like an average chick flick.... except with Smith's vulgar writing.
And that's my opinion of the film. It's a funny movie, but the love story is way off base. The ending to Clerks 2 had more of a believable love story between Dante and Randall than the entire film of Zack and Miri. If you were to take out Smith's vulgar language and few things here and there.....this is basically the same as every other chick flick.:dead:

Has my opinion offended you or something?:rockbrow:
Alright, let's take this in a different direction. I'm going to remember the film the best I can and make points as to why I think the love story is sh*t.
A. One of the first lines is something like "Why do you defend her if she isn't giving you any"? Gee....wonder where this film is going? The opening credits haven't even finished rolling...
B. If I remember correctly, they're asked several times throughout the film if they're married/dating, to which they both quickly and nervously reply "NO!".
C. The pathetic look on Miri's face and sad music when she realizes she's going to have sex with Mewes for the video.
D. The "oooohhhhh, i'm in love" look that Miri gives after having sex with Zack. She wraps her arms around her chest and giggles like a school girl....WTF?
E. The sad music and sad look on Miri's face when Zack goes to have sex with that porn star. Whatever her name was...
F. The fact that it's got the typical, highly overused...."oh I'm the guy and I can't get the girl. So I'm going to go far away and get a ridiculous job/hobby" That every other chick flick uses.
G. The guy suddenly realizes that he made a mistake, so gets a huge grin on his face while "determined" music kicks in and he literally goes running to see the girl. Never seen that before.
H. The guy gets to the girl's place only to have a quick scare and think she's with another guy.
I. The guy and girl make up. Smile while crying. Happy music. All is well.
Now toss in Smith's vulgar style of comedy. That's it. A generic chick flick with Smith at the helm. I've only seen it once, so i'm sure I missed alot more of the cliche stuff...

Yeah. It was okay. Kind of run-of-the-mill, but okay. It felt like it had a little more to say than Zack and Miri.
My favorite love/emotional stuff that Smith has done is Chasing Amy and the ending to Clerks 2.

Saw Zack & Miri this afternoon - f*ckin' loved it.
The third act could have done with a bit more balance (i.e. more gags, better tying up of loose ends from the story), and even though the love story part is a tad schmaltzy, it still works.
As for the foul-mouthed, purile cock-and-ball-and-fanny-and-ass-and-dildo-and-everything-else-mildly-sex-related jokes - love 'em...love 'em.
Had a right laugh, can't wait for the DVD, will do a full musing write up soon. :)

loved it, jut back, and i loved it.
but for once i felt i wasnt being a pretentious dick of an amateur filmmaker when i said, with genuine gusto, i could have honestly added another 20 minutes if i wrote that flick. it was great but the entire audience whent " thats it?"
like i said great flick, you know it is when the whole audience laughs out loud at every joke but still, kevin lost his groove by the final 15 minutes.
plus- 8 videogame ads before it and only 3 movie trailers, what are we coming to nowadays?!?
-though sexdrive and role models both look funny as fook.

So what did you two fellas across the pond think about the love story? Obviously the film is really funny, but was I way off base in saying that the love story could have been cut and paste from any chick flick?

I thought the love story was Smith-style. It's a bit schmaltzy, and it's not the most subtle of things, but in the end it works - it is sweet, and it is nice to watch, and the characters are pleasant company for the 100 minutes of time you're sat on your arse.
I do think the film needed to be tied up a bit better, what happens to all the other characters? What happens with the film? And so on ... mind you, apparently there's something in the credits - we didn't realise and left, Smith doesn't usually put stuff in his end credits, and a mate was pestering to go outside for a fag.
Anyway, I'll see that on DVD ... but I dug it man. Just that third act needed tightening, a few more gags thrown in, and the loose ends tied up.
I was larfin' me arse off throughout, and I dug the Dawn references - nice cameo from Savini, and blimey - a blink and you'll miss it appearance from David Early! Also, it was cool to see them at Monroeville Mall.
I do think, mind you, that having Jen (Smith's wife) as the one handing out the stuff at the school was a bit odd - not only because you're fully aware of who it is, but also because surely she's a good few years older than Rogen & Banks, and wouldn't have been in their year at school, and why would she know them? She looks 'too old' for Rogen & Banks' year group to me anyway.
Also - talking about adverts beforehand, Sex Drive, and Role Models look like funny enough flicks to me, might go see them with the lads.
I always enjoy seeing the GOW2 advert in the cinema though, gets chills running all over my body, so I've got it on my list to Santa-man (in the mean time it's SR2 and COD5, the latter of which should arrive tomorrow).
But when we went to see QoS, f*ck me - HOW MANY BOND-RELATED ADVERTS WERE THERE?!
It was all "buy his telly/watch/videogame" and everything else under the sun, oh and that watch advert with whats'ername from Hancock and Monster, Charlize Theron that's her, that advert always makes me laugh.
She fingers a watch and seemingly pops a blood vessel, cumming so hard she imagines herself walking down a red corridor filled with pictures of watches ... ... it's such a stupid advert, but always makes me laugh.
Also - those Orange phone adverts, funny for the FIRST time, BORING AS F*CK every time after that.

The ads that I see before films around here are nothing like all that. There's some program that plays before the trailers. I think it's called The Twenty or something like that. It's just a bunch of long commercials for Discovery channel shows, music, and behind the scenes of new movies. Nothing cheesy like you're saying...

There's an awful advert sometimes shown, it's for the BBC (a channel that ironically doesn't show adverts, because it forces every person with a television to stump up £139 a year otherwise they face a £1000 fine ... the bunch of shiftless Labour-luvvies) ... it's for a show called The Antiques Roadshow, and they're advertising that it's now in HD ...
Anyway, a significant chunk of cash has obviously been spent on explosions, slow motion, a whole bunch of fake antiques getting smashed up and so on, just for the pleased-with-herself presenter (who is also a newsreader for the 'BBC News Via Alistair Campbell') to pop up and grin ... how about you not advertise it? Who gives a sh*t that it's now in HD? Do you really think the sort of people who watch The Antiques Roadshow give a bollock or two about HD?
Anyway, that's an advert that annoys me, also the Radio One ad which had all the DJs on screen went on for four f*cking minutes (again, a huge slice of irony from the network that doesn't 'do' adverts) and annoyed me to no end, it was a sh*t advert too.
I do quite like the Bond/Sony HD telly advert though, I dig the music, kinda sounds like Blade Runner in a way, and it's all in slow motion, and it feels kinda dream-like, so it's a pleasant advert to watch usually.

I guess you could say it's pro porn. The porn is never the problem of the story. They decide to make a porn and that's it. The rest of the love story just plays around that...

It's pro-porn, Zack is a huge pro-ponent of the industry and keeps going on about flesh lights, and Miri keeps going on about vibrators. :D
And who else but Smith would have his characters have a heart-to-heart while one of them is taking a minging-ass-sh*t?
