....For our friends outside the UK.... in the 80s we had a media-driven campaign against violent films which led to the Director Of Public Prosecutions (DPP) outlawing certain Videos (Just like the Senate hearings in the 50s were spurred on by Dr Frederick Wertham and led to a ban on certain comics and imposed the Comics Code on comics) and meaning that stores that stocked those videos were likely to have them seized in police raids.
Previous to that it was like videos being released unrated. After that every video had to be passed by The British Board Of Film Censors before release.
Also note...many of the films on that list had different titles in different coutries.
Back to the question....That's a tough one. There are some on there that i like for various reasons...Blood Rites, Cannibal Holocauset, Tenebrae, Zombie Flesh Eaters and some are just lame and suck mightily....Night Of The Demon, Forest Of Fear.
I would probably pick Zombie Flesh Eaters...

Some favourites:
Last House on the Left
The Evil Dead
Zombie Flesh Eaters (Zombi 2)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Cannibal Holocaust
Maniac
There's some off the top of my head, but I might go with "The Evil Dead" as my all-time video nasty, which in fact was Mary Whitehouse's #1 video nasty - but for entirely different reasons (or perhaps the exact same reasons) but with an ENTIRELY OPPOSITE opinion of it. :D
I love that movie.

Dear MinionZombie:
Mary Whitehouse didnt even watch these nasties but was trying to ban them that makes no sense the woman was crazy. She thought it was ok to send people to war but wanted to ban films that she had never seen. She actually said in a interview I have never seen a video nasty in my life.

None. They suck. Most of the things on that list are over-the-top stupid.
I watched Evil Dead 20 years ago, when people were raving about how awesome it was. I was far from impressed.
Last House on the Left is radically overrated. My grandparents yapped on about how "horrible and scary" it was, and then I watched it, and thought, "hey, this movie sucks".
I did think Xtro was pretty decent; when I was 10 years old, that is. If I watched it now, I'd probably groan and laugh at it.

Dear SRP76:
Yes most of the nasties got dropped out of the DPP39 list to the DPP75 list films such as The Beast in heat,Driller Killer,Snuffare still banned in some countries. most of the video nasties are laughable these days but back in the 80's people that owned these nasties and video shop owners that carried the videos could be charged and maybe jailed because of the violence.

Horrormad - I know Mary Whitehouse never watched any of this stuff, but she did say that Evil Dead was her #1 video nasty - as in her 'worst of the worst', and still hadn't seen it. I did my final Sociology project on the whole video nasty era and the notion that 'movies make you do it', way back when I was in the Sixth Form, when the BBFC had just changed leadership and were finally lightening up.
That's what I'm saying.
Hence:
but for entirely different reasons (or perhaps the exact same reasons) but with an ENTIRELY OPPOSITE opinion of it. :D

Sorry if I'm a n00b, but... what the hell do DPP39 and DPP75 stand for?
horrormad
25-Oct-2008, 08:04 PM
DPP is short for (Director Public Prosecutions)
The DPP39 list are the banned nasty videos such as Last house on the ledt, Exorcist etc.
The DPP75 List are the films that got banned then was checked by the BBFC and dropped into the DPP75 list such films as Cannibal Man that didnt have extreme footage in them.

Flesh for Frankenstein has to be the goriest, most pornographic, and funniest Frankenstein movie, yet. Udo Kier and Arno Juerging were a great duo. I wished they starred in more movies together.

living dead at manchester morgue is really the only one of those films i can stand for longer than 3 mins. it is actually a pretty cool little film. most of the video nasties are garbage in my opinion.
i am not a big fan of gore at all. gore isn't why i like romero's dead films, in fact it is probably at the bottom of the list of reasons. i think gore is a refuge for a lack of imagination and good storytelling.
then again, i far prefer the horror films of the 30s and 40s, the hammer stuff of the late 50s, 60s and 70s, and films like the haunting (original version of course), rosemary's baby, and horror hotel to anything that's out there today.

You think that's mild? Check out Forest Of Fear... or don't because it sucks. Mind you, If i remember rightly it had John Amplas in it. But it still sucks.
The problem was that the media was whipped into such a mad frenzy that they were prepared to jump on pretty much anything at the time. The poor fella that distributed Romano Scavelini's Nightmares In a Damaged Brain in the UK got 6 months in jail for chrissakes.

Because on the needle in the eye scene and when that man got burned alive.
Nightmares of the damaged brain distributor got sentenced to jail for releasing an unapproved version.
