So my student money comes in on friday, first off im getting an i-phone because, well, ive never had a mobile thats been made after the turn of the century and with the rest im torn, ive been thinking about a ps3 and a hd tv OR blockbuster has a deal thats £199 for a blu ray player with 6 dvds, if i can remember its wall-e iron man hancock mama mia casino royal and batman begins.

so heres the question.

the ps3 is 100 quid more, but its also a games console, BUT! i get no blu rays with it, and i do have a 360.

and vice versa the blu ray player is cool, but the other one is a games console too yknow?

anyone got an opinion on this?

Yeah, buy a ps3 if you're gonna actually have 100 quids worth of games for it. Personally, I've got one, and have consistently bought 360 games since owning it and use my ps3 solely for BR discs...the games, any of which that are out on the ps3, are generally out on the 360 and have a better community for online, and is generally a better console, so unless Ps3 start releasing sick games that are exclusive, you've really got no reason to buy one.

So my suggestion, go for the Blu-ray player, and don't give any money to Sony because they've ripped off the world with the ps3, it's a piece of crap.

I Personally would go for the blockbuster deal over a PS3.

I would tend to agree with Symph & Andy. I had a similar decision to make awhile back when it finally became clear that HD-DVD was going to lose the battle to Blu-Ray. I had bought the HD-DVD attachment for my Xbox 360.

After looking at everything I decided to just get a stand-alone Blu-Ray player. Yes, the PS3 is a games console, but there just weren't enough titles exclusive to the PS3 to make me spend the extra money on it & the titles that were exclusive really didn't pique my intrest.

So, I purchased a stand-alone Blu-Ray player for my HD fix & have my Xbox 360 for any gaming fix I need .

see i do want to play the exclusives, ive never been a fanboy, ive just will never pay over £300 for anything you use like a games console. -now its finally not.
i do want to play metal gear, little big planet (sick of the sackboy ads though i am), resistance, uncharted ect. and it just so happens that its a bluray player as well.
So now ive gotten some sage advice form friends earlier in the evening i think im getting the ps3. its a blu-ray player, and given ive got the 360 and wii already il be able to get any videogame, as well as getting hd movies.

-i should point out im saving for the hd tv, i dont have that yet, so in the meantime im going with the blu ray player that has videogame capabilities as well.

Don't bother with the PS3 - you've got a 360 for games, and 360 will end up with most of the temporary exclusives at some point - or just play it at a mates house who has one (if there is such a mate), on the grand scheme it's not worth it.

But didn't you say high-def gave you a migraine?

Also - do you have a decent size screen to get the proper use out of Blu-Ray? It's not worthwhile on anything under 32 inches.

Also - what is it with the youth of today, getting your student cash in and blowing it all on a bunch of expensive toys ... when I got my loan in, I'd be happy with running down to the city's HMV and jizzing all over the 2-for-1 offer and coming away with 8 DVDs, a couple of videos, and a CD ... kids today, sheesh, bunch of Super Sweet Sixteeners.

:p

Seriously though, wouldn't it be wiser to spend only a portion of the cash - like, spend a third on fun stuff, spend a third on career stuff, and save a third in the bank? :rockbrow:

I wish I'd saved a portion of my loan each semester, that would have been nice to have in the bank gathering interest in an ISA or something, instead of going on a bunch of stuff - I wish I'd been a bit more frugal, a bit more decisive with DVD purchases, and not bought so much food - which didn't do my body any good anyway, but it was ultimately pointless as I didn't even have anything to put on a shelf to show off for the expenditure. :p

That was the fun stuff side of my loan though - I also had to buy books for uni, and pay the utility bills and sh*t.

Yes, save all the cash that you can and don't waste it on electronic junk.

But if you must buy overpriced i-crap, why on Earth use your own money? On the USA side of the pond, retailers are killing each other to get business by offering crazy 0% same-as-cash financing for 12 months or more.

So spread out the payments for an HD TV over a 12-month plan, be sure to pay off the purchase before the promotional period ends and you've not only kept your own cash in your pocket longer, but helped to build yourself good credit as well.

All those games, save for LBP are gash, I've owned or borrowed them all and have been completely disappointed...trust me...don't bother!! It's not about being a fanboy in terms of exclusives, it's about actually having a reason to own the console and buy any games for it that aren't on the 360 - and anything you can get on ps3 that's good, is outclassed by the 360 version...and you get achievements which are very good fun....

I've been thinking about the same thing Hellz. Difference is. . it's my own earned money I will be spending on it. I have the TV. . . Was wondering If I should get the XBOX and BlueRAY, or just the Playstation. I'm going with the XBOX and Blueray combo. Just not that impressed with the Playstation and all of my friends(on here included) have the XBox over the Station anyday.
