View Full Version : Land VS Diary - the poll...
MinionZombie
02-Feb-2009, 06:53 PM
Tongue-in-cheek, yes ... but information that'd be interesting to have.
Quite simple, and purely about Land of the Dead, and Diary of the Dead.
But please - let's not make this yet another Land Lovers VS Haters thread, or same for Diary.
Instead, a pure and simple comparison between the two exclusively, ignoring the other films in GAR's zombie canon, as well as zed flicks in general.
A simple 3-tier system for each film - either "YAY!", "meh...", or "BOO!" - and all the possible combinations between the two films.
VOTE NOW! :)

I have to say, one widely expressed HPOTD prediction came out to be true. I like Land more now than I did when it first came out. However, that is only because Diary lowered the freaking curve to the point Land looks better compared to its Dead peers than it used to. :annoyed:
Maybe GAR is only making movies these days to further point out how great his movies USED to be. Cagey GAR. Very cagey!!

I think so far this poll confirms that Land has been better received than Diary, and that Land has still done well (as in previous polls regarding just Land - which when polled about "do you like it or not?", the majority liked it).

Both are a meh for me. I think they suffer from the depth of the previous GAR trilogy. If they were by another director and I had lower expectations going in, I think I would have enjoyed them more. They are in my opinion better than almost anything else that has been released in the genre recently. Just victims of what we all feel a Romero movie should be. At least they weren't unwatchable shite like Day 08!

The 90's remake was a rush-job and IMO it shows. It sucks and lacks any kind of atmosphere. The acting is probably the worst of the bunch, as well... Or at least the most uneven, which makes it stick out so much.
I prefer both Land and Diary to the 90's remake. Land = yay. Diary = Meh. Night 90 = Boo!

or how often do you dust off your copy of either film? let's face it - even the most ardent diary haters probably have a copy of the film (we do tend to be completist bastages) even if they won't own up to it. it's back there, in your secret cabinet, the one where you have to touch the B on your fake bible and twist the nose on your bust of pallas to open, you know- the place you keep your really good porn so your girlfriend/wife won't find it.

The meh category is a double edged sword. I like it because I was meh in a lot of ways.
But if you boil it down to Like or Dislike who gets the Meh's?
Look at it both ways:
If Like only includes the Yay's:
Land Yay = 29/67 = 43%
Diary Yay = 26/67 = 39%
That's a piss pooring showing for GAR on the GAR fanpage.
However, if Like counts both Yay and Meh:
Land Yay+Meh = 60/67 = 90%
Diary Yay+Meh = 49/67 = 73%
Well now that's clearly a whole lot better. Both movies are clear successes.
So those Meh's are the deciding votes. Just like politics - got to entice the middle ground voters to your side. :)

How is it confusing? It's piss easy, and it covers every possible option for the three basic ways you can feel about these movies.
Yay = you love it
Meh = you can take it or leave it, weren't all that fussed about it, it's alright
Boo = you think it sucks donky butt
Not in the slightest bit confusing, and clearly from the volume of responses, nobody else finds it confusing ... just you Andy. :sneaky::D:p

Good point, sir.
I personally voted "yay/meh" for Land/Diary. I saw both in the cinema, and indeed it was my first such opportunity to see a GAR flick on the big screen, but I have to say I was disappointed by Diary. It was alright, like there are some great scenes throughout, but it's all the stuff in-between that connects it that left me with a wanting feeling.
I liked it initially, then my opinion of Diary dropped, then it came up a bit again, but it's generally levelled out at "meh".
Land I'm much more into - although I do recognise problems, and things that niggle me, but the whole picture is one I can really get behind. Indeed it was a great cinema experience (my first GAR flick on the big screen, and it was his long-awaited return to the zombie genre, and I was there with my fellow-GAR-loving buddy, and we just had an absolute blast watching it).
Plus, I was pleasantly surprised by the gang of teenagers who were a couple of rows behind us - they were GAR fans too - I have to say I judged them as troublemakers because of their age (figuring they couldn't get in anywhere else, least of all into the packed theatre for the new Guy Ritchie film at the time - Revolver), but no - they were having a GAR discussion before the movie got going, and they all had a ball watching it - just like me and my buddy.
What was also funny was watching three people walk out as soon as the intestines started flying (two blokes and a girl) - CLEARLY they had wanted to get into Revolver, but it was sold out or something, haha - or who knows, maybe they genuinely came to see Land of the Dead, but man alive ... they left in a hurry when the feasting began.
Indeed, that was the first time I ever saw someone walk out of the cinema (for that reason, and at all).
Then with Diary there was literally 4 of us there (it was an afternoon showing on a Friday though), and one of that number walked out half way through (possibly they were cinema staff, but I think it was a punter) ... then the other two afterwards voiced their displeasure and sought their money back . Then I got to chat to a rather attractive girl who worked there (had come in to clear the aisles) who asked me what I thought of the movie (needless to say, attractive girl + interest in GAR zed flicks, gave me a right old smile :D).

I loved them both. Land was a big deal, and I liked that. I also liked the fact that it could/would be seen without much hassle. Dennis Hopper, Simon Baker, and John Leguizamo? A star studded cast, they were.
Diary was great, too. I liked that it was a little less shiny than Land. Other than the fact that I had to drive kind of far just to see it, the only sucky part. Luckily, I saw it twice the first week, because it was gone after that.
I'm happy with whatever Romero puts out, and I don't mean that in a blind fanboy way. If he put something crappy out there, I'd be pissed, but I don't think he's that type of guy. If he didn't have something kickass to lay on us, I doubt he'd bother.

Yeah i loved both, the Unrated version of Land was a lot better due to the scene with Cholo and the incident with that family, it gave his character a bit more depth and helped the movie as a whole. I wasnt crazy about diary the first time i saw it but for some reason the second viewing made me love it.
People like Romero or even Carpenter tend to make movies that are hard to appreciate until some time after they get made. Not sure if 'ahead of their time' is the applicable cliche.

I'm going meh for Land and yay for Diary.
I would have seen both at the theatre but somebody thought rushing Diary to video was a better plan. I was pissed.
So I saw Land on the big screen, rented it later on, and some time after bought it. To this day I am unsure where it fits in. I am still searching for something within the film that I can't quite find. I do believe it has not fully revealed itself to me yet. I'd say I was entertained but not satisfied, and I have a theory that may give some insight as to why. It could be the actors. Think about it. All the other films had no-name actors. Your expectations were not that high but you were rewarded anyway. Throw in Hopper, Leguizamo, and Baker and you run the risk of turning pop. Selling out. My image of these actors (while they are fine actors) does not do justice to the franchise. I associate them elsewhere. They just might stand out too much overall. But thats my opinion. Some may see it a whole other way.
Now as for Diary, I rented it, watched it a couple of times and forgot about it. I think I may have been so ticked off not seeing it at the theatre that I blew it off for awhile. I found it rather strange that I did not rush out and buy it for my collection right away.
I did purchase it recently and found it to be better than I remembered. I think I dissected it too much the first time around. Got caught up in it being a documentary inside a film inside an actors point of view.
George has said it draws from Night and has the elements and feel of the first, and I find that to be true. It borrows but does not outright repeat itself. Go watch it again and you may get a fresh new glimpse of something special.

I'm with JDED on this one.
I really enjoyed DIARY, thought it was an entertaining flick and still enjoy it to this day. Is it anything great like the original trilogy? No. But, I still find it to be entertaining with some great insight into it on our society and culture today as well. Plus, it's fun to watch. I dig the professor especially.
LAND just never really interested me. I saw both LAND and DIARY in the theatre. With LAND I left feeling really upset and disappointed expecting it to be up there with the rest of the original trilogy and it was clearly not. There are part of it I really enjoy, but for me it has always been the weakest of the series. I just don't really get into it at all. Every now and then I'll give it a watching, but overall it just leaves me disappointed. I can't stand "Big Daddy" either, he just annoys me to no end. Bub could have kicked his ass.
DIARY, on the other hand, I've watched multiple times and really enjoy it every time. I especially like the "private recordings" in the special features and wish some of these "private recordings" could have been included in a director's cut of the film. With DIARY I'd like to see what all happened to these characters after the panic room -- did they escape? Where did they go? What happened next? I was interested in them and their situation, but with LAND I just didn't really care that much for any of the characters.
If I had to rank the flicks (Not yet including SURVIVAL), I'd have to rank them thus:
1.) DAY
2.) DAWN
3.) NIGHT '68
4.) DIARY
5.) LAND
and at the bottom of perhaps every movie I've ever seen including the craptacular CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD would be NOTLD 30th Anniversary which was a complete and utter kick in the face to all of us.

But what you said about diary and LOTD pretty much encapsulate my feelings as well.

True - however, the "meh" votes can pretty much be split down the middle and a half given to each side. For example, I voted "meh" for Diary, but I'm still on the side of liking it (likewise, some folk would be vice versa) - but for sake of argument, a clean split down the middle on the "meh" votes would mean:
Land: 53.5 for it // 24.5 against it
Diary: 46.5 for it // 31.5 against it

I think it'd be interesting to see the same poll with Night & Day just to see how the originals stack up. I think we can can assume doing a poll with Dawn is unnecessary.
I actually liked the characters in Land. I thought the big name actors in Land were good. They didn't distract me from the roles they played at all. I actually liked the characters in Land quite a bit. I would've loved them if they'd been just a bit more clear in their actions/motivations. I felt like some of the better character had some confusion about what they were doing and why.
