Maxtor External Hard Drive 500gb ... thoughts?

It's that time of year again, seeking out a new external hard drive to use for a new editing project...currently I'm thinking about this one:

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus STM305004OTD3E5-RK / 500GB / USB 2.0 / FireWire / External Hard Drive

But wanted to know what you folks had to say about it and/or Maxtor in general.

Last time I used a Western Digital 320gb "Essential" Edition, but I hear Maxtor is supposed to be quite good - is this the case?

Your thoughts and/or reviews of Maxtor would be very welcome. :cool:

But that's Buffalo, and I'm asking about Maxtor.

Although if anyone has something to say about Buffalo in addition to talking about Maxtor, then drop some info on me by all means.

Also - I don't need all that for this project I'll be working on, nor do I want one that big for frequent use ... one day I'll probably get a 1TB drive for back-up-of-back-up purposes, but that's not what I'm after right now.

Hence the thoughts about the aforementioned 500gb Maxtor, considering that I've read a few scraps online praising the Maxtor's build quality and reliability - what do HPOTD folks have to say about the Maxtor?

Keep in mind. Any electronic device has the potential to fail, no matter who makes it. Personally I think you're in good hands with Western Digital or Seagate. But as I said, that's not always a garuntee.

At my last job, almost all the PCs with Maxtor drives needed the drives replaced.
So I'm not a big Maxtor fan.
At home, I have always bought Western Digital and have never had a drive fail on me.

My mate had a 500 maxtor (I think, the shape is the same), I know nooooothing about how many cycles it has or how much beer you can spill on it, but it survived us running music off it for hours and hours at a time (it used to be proper hot) & being left on for days and days in a dusty, smoky room, so they can take a bit of punishment at least

There's one of the right size and the last WD I used worked fine (which was a "My Book Essential Edition" by the way).

No idea what the difference between a "My Book" and an "Elements" is ... was there ever any difference between any of the "My Book" models?

They're pretty much all of the same. Drag and drop backups.

I had problems in the past with Maxtor. Went with Seagate and never looked back. Recently picked up a 1.5 TB seagate Extreme external as a backup and it's great.
