Combine this with the fact that Glenn Beck has only been on Fux News for a few months now and is already on Bill's coattails in terms of ratings, and things aren't going too well in Loofahland, are they? :hyper:;)

To sum it up--O'Reilly blamed a rape/murder victim a few years ago for her own death by saying that she was dressed provocatively, and then he was asked by some idiot to speak at a rape victim support conference recently. When a woman pointed ou the hypocrisy on the web, Billy sicked his producers on her and ambushed her while she was on vacation. UPS got wind of the incident and withdrew their sponsorship.

Purge, I don't think you have your facts straight about O'Reilly's comments. If Wendy Murphy is siding with Bill O'Reilly, then that's all that needs to be said. Anyone familiar with her will understand what I mean. Here is link to the real story...

Secondly, I have no idea if UPS dropped O'Reilly or not, but it's not going to hurt his show. He is still the #1 rated cable news show and has been for as long as I can remember. In fact, FOX News has the top 6 rated news shows on cable(1.O'Reilly 2. Hannity 3. Beck 4. Van Sustren 5. Brett Baier 6. Shep Smith), with the dregs at MSNBC & CNN bringing up the rear. Glenn Beck comes on at 5pm EST and literally has double the viewers of Keith Olbermann who comes on at 8pm EST. That is unbelievable and truly pathetic at the same time.

Think Progress started a campaign where people could send letters to sponsors regarding O'Reilly's ambush techniques was created - and according to them, UPS responded in an email saying they have "no plans to continue advertising" on his show.

Also - Oreilly's numbers are still really high - this most likely won't hurt him, however, it's nice to see things like this happen.

I stopped watching O'Reilly a LONG time ago. He was upset that Pepsi had hired some rapper as a spokesperson, so he called out to his viewer to protest this. It seemed to work when Pepsi dropped the rapper, but I think the rapper filed suit against O'Reilly...then out of no where he claimed he had never asked people to stop using Pepsi product. It was very strange and I thought if he lied about this, then he will lie about anything. It made me rethink watching fox news altogether, then the war and they would beat people, verbally, who had a different point of view and I could no longer watch. I think O'Reilly would lie about almost anything at this point.

The thing about O'Reilly is, he's an asshole, or at least certainly comes across that way. Now I can cut successful people, with strong personalities a little slack, but I often wonder if I had the chance to rake muck, aid in the marginalization of the average American by supporting the rabid partisan atmosphere of the political system,and basically slander and verbally attack people, would I? Hell, I'd really have to think about what I'd be doing. Would I really be bringing matters of import, things in need of discussion, to people's minds, or would I just be juggling for the camera and cashing checks?

It's a shame with O'Reilly, too, as he sometimes seems--especially when not pimping for ratings on his own show--that he might be a decent guy* to have a genuine conversation with, like he might have something to actually add. But we don't really see that, do we? We see reactionary bile, more often than not.






*Note: A decent guy to have a conversation with, not a decent person. I don't know him well enough, and he doesn't acquit himself very well, so I wouldn't be able to say he seems like a decent person. Just wanted to be clear on this.
