I've heard, read and seen reports of things like this happening, but not with...trees. Sounds like Neil pulled another story from his infamous 'Colander Files (http://forum.homepageofthedead.com/showthread.php?t=13500)'. ;)

Good question!

The Daily Mail is a sack of crap (often colloquially referred to as 'The Daily Nazi') and I find it very difficult to believe that a fir tree could grow in a human lung :/ Surely this is a hoax?

Mold, spores, fungus, I buy and have read about before multiple times...but a tree seems too complex, especially to get to the point where it's sprouting needles. I would think at some point during or just after germination the whole process would stop, but now I want to read up on the topic.

Shit, if this turns out to be true, then this is so scary.

Imagine if this happened to you 500 years ago. You'd be walking around in constant pain for the rest of your life, with that tree getting bigger and bigger. Wowzer...

Dude. what's scares me is there have been supposedly documented cases of mold and fungi growing inside of people...and even...in their brains!

I didn't mean the Mail had set up the hoax, I meant that maybe the "victim" did... somehow. I have already seen this story being reported elsewhere ;)
