Well,ArmA 2 is released this coming weekend, and its looking like it will blow me away like op flashpoint did back in the day!if you like your combat sims gritty & realistic then you'll love this!it sounds like it has a few bug issues & the radio chatter still sounds dodgy like flashpoints was,but other than that it looks amazing & will no doubt be made even better when the inevitable patches & mods come available. The mission editor looks like it will be fun too, heres a few vids to show it off!MZ if your reading, your rig will make this look creamworthy

I watched the jet video.. Is that just ONE of the maps?! That's fucking HUGE! Also, if on foot, can you actually run through all of those woods that were flown over or would it be like in certain other games where for some reason there's an unknown invisible wall blocking access to wooded areas?

You can go anywhere you like in the game world chief, its one big gorgeous map with non scripted battles & events going on all over it,if you ever played operation flashpoint you'll know what its like & how missions take place in it,you wont find invisible walls! when your playing as infantry guys you have a helicopter you can radio in (takes a while to get to you as it flys from base in real time) you & your squad jump in,then you dust off & can be dropped anywhere else on the map,you just put the co-ordinates in!you can call in laser designated airstrikes or artillery fire on targets and all sorts. PC gamer gave it 83%,that score will likely go up as the initial bugs are ironed out (mainly relating to the AI getting itself confused at times by the sound of it)
Die hard CoD fans wont enjoy this though,it definitely wont play like a run & gun shooting gallery, every enemy will be deadly & you can be dropped in one shot! The interface will be just like flashpoint was which means every button on the keyboard does something different, loads of different squad commands, maps, compasses, stances, squad formations, weapons etc, this is the kind of game the PC excels at & i doubt it will get a console release! Personally i cant wait to play it!

I'd so be getting this if I thought my PC could run it smoothly, I dunno but I'm guessing it requires quite a rig. Those vids just make me wanna squeal like a little girl.

With amazing visuals and realism like that, I'm quite surprised that ArmA 2 only scored a mediocre and (quite frankly) shitty score of 70% in PC Zone. WTF? :stunned:

Im guessing its down to what all reviewers seem to be saying about it,that it feels like a beta release because theres a fair bit that needs fixing,Flashpoint was exactly the same when it was released though (this game is made by the original flashpoint team, but codemasters own the name hence it being called ArmA) & once it was patched & the modding community got hold of it it became an awesome game that still gets played today,im definitely going to give it a chance as i prefer this kind of war game to the rambo shooting galleries of CoD & the like. Theres no excuse for developers releasing unfinished games though & its something that seems to go on a lot,ive heard far worse things about the Empire total war release which put me off buying it!

Well I'm a COD4 whore, so this isn't my kind of game. Not really into simulations - but fair play to those that dig it.

Although - wtf is up with the dude's voice in the first clip, it's like a computer talking. :rockbrow:

Aye - my black beast would pwn this game's ass ... although there's still an underlying problem with games whereby it occasionally still freezes during gameplay (not like it did after I got the game, as in rather than getting a guaranteed freeze within 5 minutes, I'd probably get a freeze every 10 or so hours - hours of gameplay added together). Don't know what's up with that...

It's my editing rig though, so I've just been using it for editing mainly since I got it (although I have played Crysis and the STALKER prequel on it).

Well,i spent pretty much all day on this yesterday!its a very good game & a visually impressive war game on this scale has been a long time coming, after the first early missions to rout an insurgent force out of the area (including an awesome night vision spec ops raid) you get assigned some loose objectives, hunt down a few war criminals, look for evidence of war crimes in the region & raid insurgent camps & your free to use your own initiative to go about it!theres a Huey at base camp which you can put your team into & be flown anywhere in the region, and you can call it back for evac whenever you like,it gives you an awesome view of the countryside & because it flys to you in real time you can find yourself having to defend the LZ for 5 minutes or so while it comes in,or have it land elsewhere & run to it!
Just before i decided i really should get to bed last night i was moved to another base further inland (which involved a ride in an osprey & a push bike ride through the woods lol) where a lot more insurgent activity is going on,and again given some loose objectives, various vehicles, a chopper on standby for getting around,& fire support that can be called in whenever!a bit of radio chatter which tends to be where a lot of the plot comes from hinted that the russian army was being dragged into the war so its likely to escalate from insurgents to the soviet army before too long
The game is quite buggy which i kind of expected as flashpoint was too,the bugs will likely be mostly sorted out by bohemia & the mod community over the coming months though, and its also very hardware hungry, its the first game ive played since i bought my PC 2 years ago thats really challenged it,ive had to turn a lot of settings down to high or normal (all settings go to "very high") & tweak the draw distance, turn anti-aliasing down etc to get it running smoothly, but it still looks gorgeous!I need to upgrade now i think!
If you like simulations its well worth a go :D
