Here's a video I threw together documenting one of my brief excursions into the maze of tunnels beneath Glasgow. Finding that a usually-padlocked entrance to an abandoned railway tunnel had been damaged, me and my buddy took the opportunity to grab our cameras and head down for a bit of exploration. Eerie place it was too...

Right, 4 mins 47 secs I had to turn off 'cos the music was properly getting on my tits. But I LOVED the atmospherics at the start. Incredible. A nice 15 minute short could be done here, Krackers...

...Raimi style! :)

Come on, you gotta love some Tangerine Dream, sounds Goblin/Carpenteresque which is why I like it. :P

As for atmospheric moviemaking locations - wait till you see the abandoned underground STATION I've been exploring nearby... :D

Good job, brother!

Hey, Kraken, great shit! I do a lot of "UrbExing" myself. I've posted a couple of threads on here about a few places I've been.

Also, I didn't have the sound on but I saw you said Tangerine Dream is the music... EXCELLENT CHOICE!!!

I think that's the music that plays in the TW@ internet cafes in GTA IV...

"David ... fuck sake!" :p

You know, someone should make a movie about urban explorers - say they go into a place, and all hell breaks loose - like an "urbexing" version of [Rec] or something.

I've actually been writing a script based around the location of the tunnel system, as well as the abandoned station. Here's some pics of the station:

I once saw a special on tv about this "urban spelunking". Kinda cool, but I wouldn't do it.

Apparently there are groups of people that are into this sort of thing? http://www.urbanexplorers.net/

Spelunking? As in diving into pools of stagnant underground water? No way, man, I'd rather have a threesome with the ladies from 2 Girls 1 Cup - it'd be more hygienic. The water you see in the above clip smelled of sulphur and decay and death, it's probably been sitting there maturing into a bacterial soup for decades. I was terrified of even getting my foot wet. If you fell in there, you would get sick. If you actually went snorkelling in it, you'd probably die and become a permanent feature of the tunnel floor. :D

Looks cool, always amazes me that such huge structures are just left abandoned when they were once built with purpose, and empty buildings always seem really creepy, especially when decay & mould has set in!
Ive posted this on here before but heres a look if you missed it.. http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/b/bempton/tour/distant.html

Its an old RAF radar station a few miles away from me,the majority of it being underground!ive been down there myself & its bloody scary, that website gives you a virtual walktrough of it

Exactly! There's something surreal and melancholy about it.

That looks awesome, I'd love have a scout around there. I have a friend from Irvine who used to hang out at an abandoned munitions factory near his home which (by all accounts) is an incredible place to explore, but the buildings are still on MoD land so it's quite difficult to get in without getting picked up and ferried back out by stern-faced guards with assault rifles.

What?:rockbrow:

Spelunking is cave diving, man. So urban spelunking is going into abandoned subway systems, buildings, etc. Where'd this water business come from?

Pot-holing is cave exploration. Spelunking, I was under the impression, was literally cave diving, like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_diving

You wouldn't wanna do that underneath Glasgow. :D

Ahh... my bad. I thought the word was onomatopoeic, you know, like the sound it would make when you jumped into a deep pool inside a small space - spe-LUNK. Guess not, though.

Where do you live Blind? Surely, there must be some creepy old abandoned structures near you? There always are, you just have to look hard for them. Find a couple of brave friends, a flashlight, and BINGO, you're an urban explorer. :D

Exactly, part of the charm of these place is that they make you feel like you're in a 1980s sci-fi horror movie. :elol:

These rail lines were phased out over the 1950s and closed down during the early 1960s, during the modernisation of the transit system in the city. They were built in Victorian times, so the tunnels have been abandoned for about the same length of time as they were in use. Those limestone formations probably started building up before the line was closed, though.

I was really tempted to snap off one of those mini-stalactites, but I would feel guilty because they must have taken soooo long to develop. :D

I was exploring my yard when I came across this hidden away under a structure that appeared to be an out house.

The sign on the Hatch says...Do you believe in the hereafter...
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/mj911sc911/DSC03025.jpg

Then a 2x4 ladder goes down into the darkness about 15-20 feet...

It was an old oil tank, about 30 feet long and 15 feet tall, buried in my yard in preparation for the Nuclear War!

Here are the instructions for what to do when the attack comes...

Out of curiosity, what do the instructions say? Bit hard to read that from the photo.

I really need to go back down and transcribe the instructions...but they say something like this...

1- camouflage the exterior of building
2- power up the generators...

thats about all I can remember...

My yard is 55 acres so there are places I have not seen...and the whole place was set up for when the bombs fall...the guy had video cameras in that shelter so he could watch the driveway...strange stuff.

Plus the house is set up to withstand just about anything...you are able to shut off the lower level from the upper level with these huge doors that have medieval style cross bars with areas for a padlock...kooky.

The place is amazing!...oh almost forgot the false floor that hid the shelter had alarm sensors attached so someone could tell if it was being messed with.

I was wondering the same thing while I was filming this. The most logical explanation would be it wasn't propane in the tank, but some sort of insulation or something of the sorts... and the tank exploded in the sunlight, which made the leftover stuff dry out and expand and look like a disgusting growth.

Just my guess, though. Could be some weird fungus!

Nice videos mike! I always wonder how places of that size end up being abandoned like that, what they were like when they were new, who lived/worked there etc. The military ones are often the creepiest, there always seems to be something a bit sinister about them, especially when most of them are underground, closely followed by the hospitals & asylums!

Not something I've seen personally, but I thought some of you would be interested in THIS (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/10/the-hidden-abandoned-city_n_781669.html#s179126). Especially you NY'ers.

If you ride the 6 train to the end of the line and get off at the Brooklyn Bridge stop, you're missing out on something incredible. As the train loops around to go back uptown, it passes through an abandoned and beautifully preserved City Hall station from 1904.

The city closed the station in 1945, mostly because at its height only 600 people a day used it, and because the loop created an unsafe gap at the platform. In 1995 the city vowed to restore the site and turn it into a part of the transit museum, but those plans were scrapped years later.

The station is still not open to the public, but there's a trick you can use to see it for yourself. Until recently the MTA would force passengers to get off before the train made the loop, but now passengers are allowed to stay on. So the next time you reach the end of the line, keep going.

Something about those doorways busted through the cinderblocks is creepy. Great pics, mike.

Really looks like someone unleashed hell in there. Really made me think of the aftermath of an end of the world/zombie sort of film oepning al a 28 DL.

Thanks. It's about 15 minutes from my house. I must've driven past it literally over 200 times since I was a teenager (it's on a main route). It's an old strip mall. Each one of the stores that were housed in the strip are all connected by back hallways, or holes smashed through the walls. From what I could tell, one was a department store, one was definitely a super market (Acme), one was a youth center, another a restaurant (maybe a pizza place), and a couple others that I was unable to figure out. It's massive. Imagine a bunch of Walmarts linked together.

Thanks. Those cinderblock doorways are very creepy. Especially in person. The room I took the picture from had daylight in it. Through the first doorway it was almost completely dark, then through the second doorway it seemed pitch black. I was very apprehensive about stepping through those; you never know when there could be some whackjob just waiting on the other side added to the fact that it was just genuinely eerie to look at, even from a distance.

Really awesome pics Mike. I especially like the one with the turned over shopping cart in the foreground.

Just discovered this thread for the first time tonight. Some really great stuff here guys.

I LMAO at this in Kracken's video too:
"David ... fuck sake!"

Have you been back there since?

It's amazing what a bit of music can do for a piece of video and vice-a-versa.

Keep it up guys, great stuff.

Mike your pictures are brilliant.
