The same guy that played Arnold in a biographical film and was his body double for Terminator Salvation? Are they trying to make the same film over again or something? Try something different!

There aren't too many beefy actors around that are worth a shit these days. I draw a blank when I try to cast this one.

Fuck reboots. A reboot usually means that either a studio is too pussy to invest in an pre-existing fanbase and wants to pitch to the goldfish-brained teenie-market, or a writer is too lazy to bother doing his research for continuity so ignores it altogether and calls it a "reboot".

If they'd've brought back Milius, Stone, Arnold and Gerry Lopez (yes, fucking Subotei, where was he in Destroyer?), and made a movie about the latter days of King Conan (as promised in the previous films, dammit), the existing base of Conan fans would have gone nuts. Remember, a large portion of Robert E. Howard's original stories were set when Conan was King of Aquilonia in his older years. They could have brought in a youthful actor to play Conan's young protege and satisfy the younger crowd.

But no - REBOOT - they shit on everything and start again.

A well-loved movie franchise should not be treated like a broken computer, IMO.

Hurm. All the Howard purists I know are going to be screaming blue murder (again), but those that are only familiar w/ the films will be ok w/ it.

I just hope they do it kinda as a sequel, picking up somewhere after the 1st do & don't do a LITERAL remake...been there, seen it, done it. 1st one was awesome. Doesn't need a remake.

in that doctored pic, the dude on the far right is about the same physique as the video-game characters for the "gears of war" game, and since he's the same ethnicity as one of the characters, that's what i was gettin' at...and among those who aren't exactly big fans of the game, "queers of war" is an appropriate and commonly used moniker. here's a pic of the 'roid-head i was referring to:

When you look at how Howard described Conan and his other corresponding protagonists, along with the real world contemporaries he compared them with, you get a real buff, strong, decently sized man (by modern day standards), usually a bit over 6 feet tall with sinewy muscles. Conan is noted as being built like a panther. So heavy muscles and long relatively heavy limbs, but maybe not the pituitary freakazoids of Arnold and his ilk.

In some respects that's true. And REH was writing the early part of last century, so often he refers to men as huge and hulking and then we come to find out in a few instances they were like 6 feet or a shade over. Tall, but not to an excessive degree in modern terms.

Of course, if people want to say that Conan is meant to be a larger than life character with a larger than life physique and any modern day interpretation would be justified in ratcheting up the steroid level, I can't say their opinion is wrong. I do however disagree that strong and powerful need to equal square shaped and so oafishly overbuilt as to make movement difficult. Conan was supposed to be possessed of a grace that belied his strength and impressive physique, built like a jungle cat. Simple as.

I've read a lot of REH, by the way :D

You know, I'd even be happy with a really good ADULT animated movie. Put it in 3D like Beowulf, I'd go.
I'll believe in a movie when I finally see it. Somewhere I saw a clip from what they said was an Elric movie already done in the past, and it looked terrible. I can't find it now.
I used to love playing the role playing game back in the day. If they make a trilogy like I read, it better be epic. Or else!!!

Well, I know someone tried to make an animated version of it in the 80s, but couldn't pull it off. She ended up writing a book about the project.

I still break out the only manual I have left: Sorceror's of Pan Tang, which I thumb through on the toilet often enough. Lots of kickass art in there and they go into greater depth about the gods. I wish people still played AD&D, instead of stupid XBOX. Fun times...
I guess rolling some dice, and a few doobies to help stir the imagination, is too much for these kids today.

Currently sitting just under 70% with only a handful of ratings on rottentomatoes. Not too shabby.

Very mixed reviews for it...

Here's a -ve one:-

There have been plenty of bad movies this year, but at least you feel that people were trying with, say, “Battle: Los Angeles” or “Sucker Punch”—they didn’t actually set out to make a bad movie. “Conan The Barbarian” just comes across as half-assed; a quick, cheap, cash-grab with nothing but contempt for its audience, something that would look shoddy even if it were the direct-to-DVD movie it so often resembles. And you should stay away from it like it was a horde of bandits coming to burn down your village.

They did. It's called Your Highness...
On the commentary they talk about the movies that influenced them making this, one of them being Time Bandits.
Dood, if you haven't already: Give this a chance.
The effects in this are superb, especially for the money they were given, especially the minotaur and the hydra. You can also tell in the commentary just how much they all love the kick ass Sword and Sorcery stuff of the 80's.
However...
Eff this new Conan schnizz. I don't even think the stickiest of the icky could save it from sucking dragon balls.

Well, in all honesty, the only bad thing about it to me was the guy playing Conan. I pretty much liked the creepy bad guys he had to get through to take down the big cheese. The way he would look up vengefully at the camera with dark circles around his eyes was very Crow-ish.
He also lacked Arnie's charm, or lack thereof.
No Red Sonja either. I kept looking for Amber Heard. Cheated, I tell ya...
It wasn't horrible, but Conan should've been alot more than what they put forth. I'm still praying for the day when someone gives Elric his royal due. That's some sword and sorcery I'd like to see on the big screen.
Either way, I'm guessing there won't be any Conan sequels. I just saw it for $2.50.
