I'm actually excited for this movie. I doubt the story line is going to be that great, but I really want to see this for the action sequences alone. I love watching simulations of the world collapsing, so this is right up my alley. The ending of the trailer when the tsunami is hitting DC - chilling/awesome.

I'm kind "meh" about it. It could go either way.

How many end of the world films has Emmerich done now? 10?:rockbrow:

His movies usually suck...but I love to watch them...weird???

I enjoyed ID4, I sort of Dug Godzilla, the whole global warming thing was cool in the Day after Tomorrow...his flicks are sort of like those b movies that come out that are exactly like the big budget but go direct to video...only his are the big budget.

the trailers for this film have more CGI than the new star wars trilogy and the lord of the rings trilogy combined....and yeah, this dude's films are always a bit over-the-top and far-fetched. looks watchable, though...couldn't be any worse than "godzilla"...

I get kind of a 'meh' feeling about it too, but since I know so little about the film (aside from the general OMWTFG!!!11! 2012 premise) I may try and preserve that lack of foreknowledge and check it out anyway.

i loved that an ad for this at comic-con said "only 3 comic-cons left, enjoy then while they last" and people actually thought it was real and comic-con was shutting down even though it was the 2012 ad that showed a city bieng destroyed.

Godzilla was one of the only movies that I ever walked out of. To this day, I do not know how it ended. I was shrooming, and therefore extra sensitive to shit filmmaking. But I loved ID$. . go figure.. . . . This movie. . 2012. . will suck . . . and suck badly. . . but I will go see it because. . as bad as his movies are. . . he sure does make stuff blow up purdy!!

Godzilla was one of the only movies that I ever walked out of.

Ever see "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms"? (Of which GINO is MUCH more of a remake of than Godzilla....)

If you have seen it, then, yes, you pretty much know how it ends....

they've already nipped the "the world ends in 2012" argument in the bud, watch the knowing dvd special and all of the scientists even said just the end of a cycle, not the world. but disaster films are great to watch

Watching Roland Emmerich try to remake DEEP IMPACT is kind of like watching a monkey try to fuck a football. He just can’t figure it out. And fumble and twist and turn though he might, the end result is always the same, with everyone involved leaving frustrated and ultimately disappointed. It’s not a movie, it’s the proof of concept for a shitty videogame destined for the $14.99 shelf. There is nothing remotely movie-like about this film except that it was projected on a very large screen and no one was handed a controller.

Yeah, but there's two sides to every coin.

Judging by Rotten Tomatoes it looks like most people get the idea. It's mindless eye candy. Anyone looking for anything more will just be setting themselves up for the big hurt. As one reviewer put it...."This isn't disaster porn, this is a disaster gang bang."

I feel like most of the negative reviews(including AICN) are because they were too thick headed and full of themselves to realize this is a "check your brain at the door" kind of film.

Check your brain at the door is one thing, but it just sounds painful to watch... There's talk of a couple of minutes of the film being spent watching a chicken in peril.... CHICKEN IN PERIL!!!

Strangely, while I've not been paying much attention to this film, I've been wanting to actually see it a little bit more and more.

As I've said before, anything with John Cusack in it is worth seeing - and the dude's in this. As is Woody Harrelson - another dude always worth watching.

The trailer makes it abundantly clear that this is gonna be ID4 mated with TDAT, and then cloned, and then fused into one big waddling blob of disaster movie-ness. It's two hours of shit falling over or exploding, or exploding as it falls over.

There's a part of me that really wants to go and watch all this shit blow up and fall over blowing up...

...I think I just might, as a guilty little pleasure. Hell, I went and watched Transformers 2, so why not?

...

I'll end this by saying I also went and saw The Wrestler, and Adventureland, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ... ... my point being, there's a time and place for pretty much everything.

Good! These bad reviews are making the movie more and more EXACTLY how I wanted it to be! I didn't want much of an idiot story. I just wanted tons of scenes of the action shown in the trailer, loosely strung together with some shitty filler.

Don't read this if you don't want it spoiled, but the trailers had me thinking the world was going to blow up and we'd be roaming space Battlestar Galactica style for awhile. This was more like Noah's Ark.
It was watchable clearly for the effects. When it starts getting sappy around the middle, take a bathroom break. Trust me, you'll have time.
Later, after some more sweeet devastation, there's another lull to get your refill on.
Other than that I wanted to see Earth explode in the rearview mirror, it was watchable once on the bigscreen. I bet it makes a shit ton of money, because we had a bunch of theaters with this playing in multiple rooms. And they were all selling out.
Interesting choice of words there...

CONTAINS SPOILERS - MAJOR SPOILERS

Where do I start? Well let me get to the things that need to be said out of the way first. Without a doubt, Roland Emmerich is the King of the modern disaster flick. No one has destroyed the world better than Emmerich. His visual style when it comes to blowing up NY, DC or LA is just completely unsurpassed in todays modern blockbuster disaster flick.

If disaster is your thing, than 2012 undoubtedly sits at the top of the pile, although the pile I refer to is the steaming pile of shit we all try to avoid. However, in todays modern end of the world epics. He is without a doubt this generations Irwin Allen.

2012, as most of you know, is about the end of the world as we know it. Borrowing from the Mayan prophecy and calendar that the world needs to be reborn every 640,000 years. Emmerich has us follow divorced father John Cusack who moonlights as a limo driver for a Russian business man, but is trying to reconnect with his children on father and kids camping trip to Yellowstone park.

During their trip they find Yellowstone fenced off because the government is doing testing of the earths core to keep up to date on the ever changing problems with the planet while they prepare their disaster plan to evacuate the world by building the Uber hightech versions of Noah's ark.

Trying to reconnect with is children he takes them to the spot where he and their mother enjoyed their most happy moments only to discover the lake is gone and the earth around it super heating to the point it fries everything within its path, which makes no sense whatsoever because they stand within the hotzone to no effect on their persons whatsoever.

During their trip then run into conspiracy theorist radio Dj Charlie Frost played by Woody Harrelson who informs them of what the government is really up too, and honestly Woody Harrleson is once again the savior of this extremely bland flick by injecting lunacy to perfection with the character and material given to him.

Fast forward to LA pretty much falling into the Ocean, John and kids rush back to save his ex-wife and her plastic surgeon boyfriend....

Ok, Honestly I am going to stop right here and just start bitching about everything I hated about this film.

This is by far the most melodramatic, overacted, overproduced film I have ever watched and honestly makes some of UWE BOLL's films watchable. Between the romace arc, the overly stupid dialog to the bad reactions and decisions characters make in situations, that should have been acted out completely different, and most likely would be in the real world, this film panders to everything people bitch about being wrong with todays cinema fare.

Honestly I literally sat in the theater debating whether I should walk out or not, but I went with friends so I couldn't just bail, and instead took at least one bathroom break and one smoke break.

The social meassge of this film comes down to one thing, scaring the audience into the fact Global Warming is real. It definitely tries to hammer the message home in such a way that ever the hard core knuckle heads would have to open their eyes, but of cousre it convolutes the message by injecting needless scenes of turmoil and suspense that don't deliver at any level.

I thought I was the only in the theater not enjoying the film but as I looked around I noticed many checking their cellphones and watches for the time, and readjusting themselves in their seats every 5 minutes.

The film is a gigantic $200 million dollar CG spectacle that is just pointless and boring and only entertains when the world completely goes to shit.

Had the film spent 20 minutes on that aspect and then following people living life on the Uber super Arcs I think it would have made a much better film, but instead it panders to the one audience that is going to roll their eyes at the film when it climaxes by saying our new homeland is Africa. Now honestly I don't mind them using Africa as a base to rebuild humanity once everything rights itself, but the way it was presented just reaked of some kind of slight against the core conservative base that of course gasped in awe and disbelief during the screening.

Since I went to check the film out in gettysburg, pa, and hearing the audiences reaction to this development you knew right away the films enitre message was lost because of how it was delivered.

In the end I will say I did have some laugh out loud moments when John and Woody were on the screen, and John usually never fails to disappoint, but in this case the movie even overshadows him and you really don't care if he, his kids, or family lives or dies. This is a film that should have engaged audiences on every level but instead bored them to death every chance it had and did enough cramming of social commentary down our throats I wanted to throw up the popcorn and goobers I was munching on during the presentation.

What bothers me even more is John Cusack has been known to go on record for hating Better Off Dead, the film that launched his career, yet he has no problem promoting this gigantic turd.

Everyone knows I hate LAND of the DEAD, well I hate 2012 even more, and this film has officially landed on my worst of 2009 list, and most likely will be on my list of the worst films of the early 21st century.

Almost total crap, but the destruction sequences are jaw dropping, however the overuse of CG is just unbearable at times and very distracting.

I would rather have my balls waxed then have to sit through this POS again.

:annoyed::annoyed::annoyed::annoyed: out of 10

Yeah, quite a funny scene actually but still doesn't make up for the two + hours of sheer boredom.

A conversation goes on between an asian family while the grandmother is holding down a chicken about to cut its head off to make dinner, all while discussing the end of the world, even the chickens reaction was comical

$65,000,000 opening weekend. outstanding.

looks like if it gets bad press and bad reviews, it makes money. transformers 2,anyone?

LOS ANGELES - Doom spelled dollars at the box office as the global-disaster tale "2012" opened at No. 1 domestically with $65 million and pulled in $225 million worldwide.

The Sony Pictures action saga tells the story of a scramble to save remnants of humanity aboard giant arks as the earth's crust shifts and flood waters pour over most of the planet. With a cast led by John Cusack, Danny Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor, "2012" was directed by doomsday specialist Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow").

Overseas, "2012" did $17.2 million in France, $15.3 million in Russia, $9.9 million in South Korea and $8.1 million in Spain.

Domestically, "2012" came in just shy of the $68.7 million opening weekend for "The Day After Tomorrow." But Sony reported that its global total was the best ever for an original movie not based on an established franchise, brand or best-selling novel.

"Roland is that type of filmmaker that casts his net really wide," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "The story is something people could really relate to. It's a story of the survival of humanity."

Be interesting to see what the drop off is. Godzilla & The Hulk made a bunch of money opening weekend too...and then sank like a stone.

Not trying to single you out Ace, or ruin anybody's good time. If you enjoyed it, good on you. I guess I'm not the the target audience for this. I liked ID4 The Day After Tomorrow & all, but that was as far as I can go in the "blowin' shit up reel good!" genre. At least they had a LITTLE something more going on...
