View Full Version : Wes Craven = F**king Overrated?

Now don't throw rocks at me all at once but after careful consideration I really don't rate Wes Craven very much. In fact, I think he's an unadulterated pile of shit.

Why am I saying this? Well tonight I gave The Hills Have Eyes Part II a thorough viewing - OMG, what a steaming pile of dog's cack! I shudder to think that I actually liked this movie once upon a time but shiiit it really is a low. Spoilers below.

Bunch of motorcyclists head off into the desert for a race, backed by Bobby (the hero from the original) and his 'super fuel', which makes a cyclist zoom off at KITT turbo boost futuristic capability. It seems that the family from the original also took Ruby (the feral chick from the original) under their wing and she is now the manager of the team. I know, who f**king scripted this nonsense?

Miraculously, the team bus springs a leak and they are stranded (yet again) in the same area where the cannibals offed the original family. Obviously they get picked off one by one by two cannibals, Pluto (who died in the original) and The Reaper (a new dude). Pluto was originally killed by the family dog, Beast (who also makes a return), via bite to the neck, and his survival is explained something like this: "You see, Reaper came down and patched me up real good!"

The Reaper wasn't even in the original. Who in the cannibal clan was left alive to contact him? Where the f**k did this c**t spring from? Severing an artery in the neck is total death in minutes!

Anyway, the spoilers end there. But the fact that the film is pretty much spaced out by a whole quarter of it's length with flashbacks from the original (Bobby, Ruby, even the f**king dog has a flashback) places this one in the hall of crud, along with most of Craven's flicks.

Okay, The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare On Elm Street and The Serpent And The Rainbow are okay (yes just okay) but the rest ain't all that. Last House On The Left is below par wank made famous for some chick pissing her pants, Swamp Thing was only worthy for Adrienne Barbeau's gigantic tits and Scream just f**king sucks period. Do I need to remind y'all of Vampire In Brooklyn? Sorry I'm so gung ho with this but I really don't see what the big deal is.

Rant over. :D

lol, goddamn. :D

I've never seen Hills 2 - saw the sequel-to-the-remake Hills 2 ... and it was abysmally atrocrocious, I mean so goddamn bad. The Aja remake of the original was actually pretty good, and the original Craven movie was okay.

I like Last House, but don't watch it at all often. Nightmare 1 I like, but I'm far more of a Jason guy, New Nightmare was a decent idea - but there's basically fuck all Freddy in it, so it's really boring for the most part.

Scream - I've liked and hated this movie, and sometimes at the same time ... neat idea, but taken too far with the sequels (especially 3 which was fucking retarded).

Not really seen many other Craven movies beyond those really, to be honest...

Amen.

Wes Craven is the most over rated genre director ever. Tobe Hooper follows in a close second.

Everything that Craven has touched (bar 'A Nightmare on Elm Street') has been terrible. The only reason he's still working is because 'Scream' managed to hit a nerve with some feckin ejits. I dispise that film & everyone in it.

I kind of like 'Last House on the Left' too, but I can only watch my own cut of it now.

I remember seeing 'The Hills Have Eyes II' in the 80's on video. You actually couldn't get the first part in Ireland for years. Fuck knows why. But I recall actually feeling like an idiot for suggesting we rent it. It was ridiculous.

That dog flashback........fuckin' hell!

Wes Craven is a :clown:

Yeah, I've always thought he was overrated. In fact, I think most horror directors that are held as legends of the genre are overrated...

Cnut, you forgot to mention that in Hills 2, the dog has a flashback. :p

Outside of Elm Street, Scream and Serpent and the Rainbow, his movies are pretty lousy.

totally agree. both have had their moments but neither one has really lived up to either the hype or (in tobe hooper's case) the promise of some of their early work.

as far as craven goes, i'll echo what a lot of other folks have said: nightmare is great, so is the serpent and the rainbow. the freddy's nightmares tv show is decent and i enjoy nightmare cafe because it is so fucking bizarre. beyond that there really isn't much to ol' wes.

hooper has done a couple great movies along with a long string of turds. his best work, which in my opinion is the salem's lot miniseries is 30 years old. i saw one of his recent films, "mortuary" on chiller and while it isn't the worst thing i've ever seen, it isn't exactly great either.

I would have to say he's a bit overrated too. Aside from The Thing, he hasn't done anything worth the praise he receives, imho....

You watched it? That's funny. I bet you want your hour and a half back. Hills 2 sucked and so did the remake. Remember when the dog magically vanished? MZ, you have to watch it. Its bad funny. If we sat through it, then you have to. Fair is fair, right? ;)

Hey Bass, what about Starman, They Live, and that Masters of Horror episode that has the pale dude w/ wings?

Besides Nightmare on Elm Street recall that Chiller (1985), Shocker (1989), and People Under the Stairs (1991) were all decent movies.

I'm going to have to agree with you, Bass. Majority of them are. People really put them on such, a high petsidal. I've been disappointed with a couple of classics because of this. Dawn of the Dead and The Thing being two of them. On my first viewing they were two of the most disappointing viewings I've had so far. Dawn has grown on me though. The Thing not so much....

I like Craven.
He's not my favorite director, that would
either be Lynch or Waters.

Last House when it came out was daring
and Nightmare on Elm St. was a new twist
in horror that was copied by everyone.

And to be fair he didn't want to do Scream
he was bullied into it by the studios.

Is everything he did good? no, of course not.
But he is far from horrible.

And Nat overlooks how crazy I am
so its all good by me.

I liked People Under the Stairs, but apart from that I can't really think of something that Wes Craven did that made me go "Wow." I do love John Carpenter, however.

Sorry, I'm used to US laws/customs.

Laws vary from State to State. For example, 17 yrs old is the legal age here in Texas. Other States it may be 18. 16, 15, and yes, even 14. And I nailed a 17 yr old back when I was 24 or 25. She was a senior in high school.

Nah, you can still do that just as long as you bring round the edible underpants like you did last time.

I sure the Kaos family rewind that scene again and again. ;)
