this time of the fantastic four. i don't get this at all.

Fox rebooting Fantastic Four

Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to reboot the Fantastic Four movie franchise for Fox, bringing the FF into the same camp of rebooted Marvel heroes that the Punisher and the Hulk belong to, Variety reports.

Goldsman will be acting as producer on the reboot. Michael Greene, veteran scripter of shows like Jack & Bobby, Smallville, Heroes and the upcoming Green Lantern movie, will write the screenplay.

Fox has produced two films featuring the Fantastic Four so far, 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Both were directed by Barbershop helmer Tim Story and were noteworthy for having a fairly lighthearted tone in a superhero movie market dominated by the likes of The Dark Knight and the fairly grim X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Aside for winning an Oscar for his screenplay for Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind, Goldsman is known for producing films such as Constantine, I Am Legend and the upcoming adaptation of DC Comics' Jonah Hex. He also gained some infamy for writing the generally reviled Batman & Robin.

No word yet if this reboot will bring the FF into the same movie continuity shared by Iron Man, the Hulk and Nick Fury, as has been established in the "tags" following Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

the last paragraph provides maybe the only semi-logical reason for doing something like this. the idea of bringing iron man, hulk, nick fury and the fantastic four film franchises into one continuity does make at least a modicum of sense.

Well...at least this reboot may be worth it. The previous two FF movies weren't exactly good.

But the question is....can they do any better?

i've thought about this a bit. if they want to make FF a bit darker, bringing more in line with the tone of most other SH movies, they'd almost have to recast the franchise. i just don't see the present FF cast as all that dark and edgy (michael chilkis excepted).

I thought this was the plan?

A recast would be a definite advantage. Although I must say that Jessica Alba was nice to look at(in the first one). Too bad her acting skills are at the level of an early Romero movie....

Personally....I think Marvel is going to fuck everything up with trying to get all the characters into one film. I mean they're already working on an Avengers movie when there's only been Iron Man and Hulk movies.

This may be the one case where Disney's ownership of Marvel could work out. Considering the Incredibles was a better F4 movie than either of the live-action abortions.

Then again, I believe this is a lingering Fox option, so the Mouse'll have nothing to do with it. >sigh<

Maybe hovering over as quality control?

You're all barking up the wrong tree. The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Daredevil (which includes Elektra) are licensed out to Fox for making movies. Marvel still owns the characters, but has no control over the movies. Fox is only rebooting the FF franchise, so they can retain the movie rights to it.

Marvel Studios has only made and released Iron Man and the Hulk so far...that is it. They will also be handling the movies for Thor, Captain America and the Avengers.

Sony has the movie rights for Spider-Man...now all of a sudden, they are planning on releasing 3 more Spidey films, so they too can retain the movie rights.

Hopefully the infamous Disney lawyers will be able to free these franchises up and get them reverted back to Marvel Studios. Until such a thing happens, the FF, X-Men, Daredevil and Spidey films will not be able to crossover with the rest. Sad, but true :(

Isn't it about fifteen minutes since the start of the last Fantastic Four franchise?

aside from TDK, i've not seen any comic-book movies since spidey 3 (which sucked major ballsack)...comic book movies are almost as bad as remakes...and now they're rebooting comic book movies that have been out less than 10 years.

hopefully a meteor will wipe out hollywood and the entertainment industry, or maybe all the chicken-little guys goin' on about swine flu are right and all the unoriginal and un-inspired greedy fucks in charge of the film industry will die...then maybe one day i'll make a trip to the theater again.

movies these days are beyond fucking terrible, and i really don't see the slightest bit of justification in wasting so much money on such a shitty franchise....fantastic four...give me a break....like we fucking need 3 FF films within 5 years.:annoyed:

In two strange yet unrelated incidents...

1.) I was recently in a Blockbuster for the first time in years and the Fantastic Four sequel was being pimped on a big hi-def TV at the front of the store.

2.) I happened to catch an hour or so of the Disney Channel while visiting relatives that have young children.

In both instances, it was truly difficult to believe that I was watching entertainment featuring human beings and not some bizarro alien race of pod people.
