The Godfather Trilogy / Street Trash / Darkman / Ace Ventura 1 & 2:

...

The talk of Street Trash on this very forum, and finding out Roy Frumkes wrote & produced it, inspired me to dig out my unwatched copy and check it out - decent, but really needed 20 minutes lopped off the running time, and a far tighter script.

And yes, I've only just seen Darkman for the first time ever last night. :p :o

Finally, I'll go against the common tide on this issue - Godfather Part I is better than Godfather Part II.

The Godfather Trilogy?!

Jee-zus, MZ! Care to share your thoughts on the telegraph? I hear that trilogy is one of them new fangled talkies, true?

:)

Honestly though, how did you feel Darkman held up, given it's age? That movie, when I first saw it in the theaters, struck me as campy and dark (no surprise there), but it was--to my mind--very memorable and was a roller coaster considering the shit heaped upon the protagonist. I seem to recall I didn't like the overall effect of the story that much then and probably would only appreciate bits and pieces of it now, but it seemed to do a better job casting the image of the superhero-antihero than the '89 Batman film did.

lol, cheeky beggar - - - like I said in the blog though, I'd already seen Godfather 1 and 2 years ago. :p:sneaky:

It's only Godfather 3 that I'd not seen until last week.

...

Darkman - I dug it, it does feel like an early "big" Raimi movie, if you know what I mean, I can feel when watching it that it's kinda like "those Evil Dead guys are pushing themselves into something bigger", but it's nice to see that too.

Oh yeah, it's definitely a bit campy, but that's kinda what it is. It would have been interesting to see what it would have been like with more money available to it, but that said, the helicopter chase with Darkman hanging off that cable at the bottom was awesome - even today.

Liam Neeson also pwns all in that movie.

Also, the "Raimi flair" in the flick is really enjoyable - like whenever Darkman sees red and goes nuts.

The Godfather Trilogy is something that I can watch every month or so and never get tired of it. Well....the first two more so than the third. The third is like Ghostbusters 2 or BTTF 3....a companion to the original, but not in the same category.

Haven't seen it, but Gamer looks like a load of dog shit wrapped in garbage with a hint of vomit. Pass...

I totally missed that was even one of the films being critiqued, but after taking a moment to read MZ's review little has changed for me. I will probably see it eventually. by tripping over it on cable or Netflix. but certainly not go out of my way to see it. Let's say I feel very tepid towards it.

Ghostbusters 2, and Back to the Future 3, are both WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than Godfather 3!

For one, neither of them have Sophia Coppola acting in them! :elol::p

Yeah, Gamer is no Crank 2, I'll say that for damn sure.

...

Also - Martyrs - a very tough, but rather good, horror flick...the anti-Hostel, essentially.

Wow, you have no love for STREET TRASH. I thought it was funny and unique. The scene where the bum goes grocery shopping was gold, and the old school effects were top notch, but the actors are what made this movie a standout to me. Great locations too, btw.

I wouldn't say "no love" at all ... but the flaws were pervasive for me. It needed more "POP!" in general, a bit of zing, and a more consistent following of the characters - who just kinda come and go from time to time, their dialogue often trailing off into a bunch of mumbled nothingness, rather than having a real point to it sometimes.

The meltdowns were awesome, and I liked the idea of the movie, and some of it was quite funny, but it was overlong and needed a better script with a more focussed set of characters, and better pacing.
