I'll just come right out and say it *deep breath* I don't own a copy of the original Night of the Living Dead. I understand there's been various DVD releases; some good, some bad, I need some advice on which one to buy. The one I've been looking at is this one: http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/693176/Night-Of-The-Living-Dead-Special-Edition/Product.html

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
That is the worst one you can get. While the extras might look appealing, the film itself is cut by four minutes because the company accidentally acquired a censored print.
This (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Living-Dead-Region-NTSC/dp/B00005Y6Y2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256681305&sr=8-1) is the one to get.

The DIMENSION Extreme 40th anniversary release has a better mastering of the films print. The ME edition has good features, but the film print ont he Dimension release is better

Well I'm not one for extras really, I just wanted the copy with the best version of the film on and some of the reviews of that one you linked to are saying to get another copy again...

Well, by far, the best would have to be the absolutely wonderful "30th Edition" copy of "Night". They add all kinds of wonderful new scenes that add to the brilliance of the film as well as introduce some great new characters such as a minister that steals the show for his amazing acting -- it just adds a whole new feel for the brilliance of the film. Oh, I almost forgot, they have an INCREDIBLE new soundtrack in this one that blows the original out of the water. For the buck you just can't beat the "30th Anniversary Edition"...
:evil::evil::evil:
Nah, man, I can't do that to anyone... I wouldn't even do that to a worst enemy, Romero deserves better than that. My personal favorite is the "25th Anniversary Edition" which is NOT butchered and destroyed like the "30th Anniversary Edition" -- it has some really great new audio commentaries as well which are worth the purchase.
Seriously, whatever you do, make sure you get the original film and NOT the "Special Edition" of it was disfigured and destroyed.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED!
BEST PQ

Nope you need this one, too: Millennium Edition
(http://www.amazon.com/Night-Living-Millennium-Chilly-Cardille/dp/B00005Y6Y2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256691218&sr=1-4)
Both versions have been discontinued apparently. Btw, this UK Blu-Ray (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Living-Dead-Blu-ray-Judith/dp/B001CHG054/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256691345&sr=8-5) has the best picture quality (same transfer as the US 40th DVD).

Really? Wow. I didn't get it just because I already have ME & was under the impression it was the one to get. Before I got ME & also got the Sony "colorized" version, just because it also had the remastered B&W version on it. any idea how it compares the ME & 40th?

The Fox/Legends version is crap when compared to both the ME & Weinstein versions: DVD Beaver (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare/nightlivingdead.htm).
I disagree with DVD Beaver, however, in that the colorized version looks "damn impressive." It looks like a coloring book.
The Weinstein 40th anniversary version is also substantially cropped and the image is slightly squeezed.

Thanks Dubious, that's good to know. I used to play that one more often as the ME had a problem with annoying freezes between chapters on my old player, but it doesn't seem it be as pronounced (if at all) on the one I have now, so I haven't watched it in a loonnng while.

Supposedly it is now a 'Best Buy exclusive' or something.
