This may seem a tad specific but you gotta understand i grew up on jrpgs, the typical turn based japanese style of high fantasy or sci-fi rpg, they outnumbered my other games at least 5 to 1 on whatever console i looked at.

So im capturing videogame footage for a project im working on for a company and i notice something funny about all these current gen games. Now lets look at this pile of games form this generation next to me:

rock band
the orange box
dragon age
left 4 dead
fallout 3
lost planet
odst
little big planet
folklore
valkyria chronicles
disgaea 3
metal gear 4
fable 2
oblivion
mass effect
gears 2
fear 2
crackdown
resi 5
mirrors edge
eternal sonata
street fighter 4
saints row
viva pinata.

long list for a project i know, but out of my personal current gen pick, which includes many rpgs, only eternal sonata falls into the jrpg pile. one. a single game. ive played others, like infinite undiscovery, lost oddessy, star ocen: the last hope. But Eternal sonata, a game involving sheet music, taking place in the final dying fever dream of real life musician chopin. Who plays a main role in the game. the graphics are a beautiful example of cel shading, the soundtracks superb, some of it actual music composed by chopin and whilst the storys kinda janky, what jrpg isnt? the controls are great, it has interesting twists like enmies altering form and type based on if they are standing in light of shadow and whilst its no game of the year its something thats stayed in my collection when all other jrpgs of this generation havent. i could say its just a sign of what most developers are saying, that the west is finally taking over the east in terms of innovation and appeal, but its odd that this generation has no great title to rival the likes of final fantasy, or wild arms, or grandia or skies of arcadia.

Seriously rpg fans, can you name any current gen ones that blew you away?

Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are pretty much it for me, and it's been a while since those came out. I'm curious as to what Mistwalker is up to, haven't heard much from them lately.

Persona 4 came out last year on PS2 and outclasses pretty much every current-gen JRPG, hopefully Final Fantasy XIII can bring the genre back to the mainstream.

Also, I heard Tales of Vesperia for 360 is superb. It's probably pretty cheap by now, I'll definitely buy it somewhere down the road.

Oblivion, fallout 3, and that's about all the RPGs I've ever played...

Oh I had Fable 1 too...

Oblivion, fallout 3...
That's all I've played this gen. Not had much of a chance to check out the others.

Epic.

Disqualified I know but I've been playing a lot of Secret Of Mana lately.

I know that it's not a Japanese RPG but if you liked KOTOR then you would probably like Mass Effect. I'm loving it right now.

Any game from the "Tales" series regardless of which system. Fire Emblem is awesome as well.

These games are not rpgs, but have similar features such as leveling up and equipping.
Super Paper Mario
Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2
Any Castlevania game for the DS

If you own a DS, I have read positive reviews for Mario & Luigi: Bower's Inside Story.
