2012:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/11/2012-or-how-to-crack-walnut-with-atomic.html

2012 is like cracking a nut with an atomic sledge hammer, but to be fair, it still cracks the nut.

...

Is it enjoyable anyway? Of course it is - it's got John Cusack in it, and it's got Woody Harrelson stealing every single one of his few scenes as another beautifully whacked-out oddballs ... plus, a ton of shit falls over and explodes.

Moon:

Straight into my top films of 2009 list, this flick plays like old school 1970s science fiction, the kind that happens to take place beyond our planet, but which tells a (good) story that isn't really about the setting or the technology.

Say Anything:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/11/say-anything.html

I had a bit of a John Cusack movie fest a few weeks ago, and I spoke about how I got Better Off Dead, and Say Anything mixed up. I was looking for 'the movie with the ghetto blaster above the head' moment, and got my wires crossed and saw Better Off Dead - fortunately, that was a good little flick.

The Men Who Stare At Goats:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/11/men-who-stare-at-goats.html

I've not got a lot to say about this flick, but I will say that it was good fun. It wasn't riotously funny, or exceptional, and I won't be pre-ordering the DVD (it's the kind of flick I'd, personally, pick up somewhere down the line) - but it was enjoyable throughout and it's definitely worth seeing.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/11/imaginarium-of-doctor-parnassus.html

It's always the case with a film by Terry Gilliam, that you never really know what you're going to get. You don't know what you should expect, and sometimes you barely know what you're paying to see.

Public Enemies:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/11/public-enemies.html

I'd wanted to see this in the cinema, but unfortunately I was far from mobile at the time (recovering from an operation), so I finally got to see it the other day. I was quite excited about it initially, being that it's the new Michael Mann movie, and it simply looked a lot better than what Miami Vice had been.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009):
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/11/taking-of-pelham-123-2009.html

It's not a big "wow" by any means, but it's not total pish ... yeah, that's pretty much it, so there's no point banging on about it.

State of Play:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/10/state-of-play.html

State of Play, Americanisation or not, is a bloody good thriller. It's not a remake of All The President's Men, but it's from the same stable - but updated to the 21st century where the 'new kid' "blogosphere" has been giving the printed press a damn good drubbing.

Better Off Dead:
http://deadshed.blogspot.com/2009/10/better-off-dead.html

It's almost like the a John Hughes movie strained through a sort of teenage, sub-Monty Python filter. It's oftentimes utterly bizarre, or blackly comic, or just downright weird.

This is probably the biggest example of a generational gap between us here MZ. The fact that you have just gotten around to watching Better off Dead, and not spent the greater part of your life loving that movie and quoting it and whatnot. . . . it just reminds me of how old I am, and how young some of you whipper snappers are.

Oh and 2012 was an overtly manipulative piece of regurgitated monkey shit. But it was cool to look at in parts.

Yeah, Better Off Dead never got a lot of airtime over here in the UK I don't think, when I was growing up, but the John Hughes movies would, so I saw those when I was a teenager, and they made up my quotient of '80s teen movies' ... still though, found it eventually and I dug it, so that's a good thing. :)

Well, there's a decade between us, so it's not all lost there clang, you're not quite over the hill yet! :D

...

2012 is indeed, not a great film, but it's not a shower of shit-piss either. It's an unappologetic slab of Twinkie, pretty much (to use an American foodstuff example that's 'good tasting, but bad for you' as a strained analogy) ... it's like a handful of good stuff, and a handful of turds, smushed together vigorously for two and a half hours.

Even still - it's got John Cusack in it - and what's not to love about that?

Hey man(s), there's just so many movies out there that you're bound to have missed a few until recently. I'd also like to say that all other werewolf transformations suck when compared to the awesome job Rick Baker & Co did on AAWIL.

Don't get me started on a bunch of my friends though - the movies they haven't seen would make your eyes water. :p
