I love where this series is going.

Ok, Lithgow is creepy as hell. Where does this scene go that leaves us hanging in the police station?

This series is a committment. Once you are hooked, you cannot stop watching, ever!

This has definitely been my favorite season so far, and Lithgow is just awesome as Dexter's nemesis. Smits was really good last season too. Those last few minutes of last night's episode was one of the most intense TV moments in recent memory, and I'm glad most of the uninteresting subplots were wrapped up.

I think next season is going to focus on Dexter getting caught, there are just too many variables and he's been very sloppy in every aspect this season. Here's hoping the finale next week will live up to fan's expectations.

Season 4 has definitely been super awesome, and last night when...

Lithgow, towering above Hall, stooped down and stared directly into the camera and said "Dexter Morgan" ... man alive, that was chilling.

This has really been a kick ass season, I can't wait to see next week's finale. Every single episode ends with some awesome cliff hanger that just makes you want to keep watching, and you're always kept on your toes. Brilliant television.

Hands down the best Season of Dexter since the show began.

How the hell do you top John Lithgow in season 5.

When he walked into the police station and locked eyes on Dexter and they stood face to face I was like OH SHIT! Definitely raised the hairs on my arms when he grabbed Dexters ID and read his name aloud.

You know Trinity's death is going to be brutal, and Season 4 will go down as the best season ever for the show.

I rank the seasons as so:

Season 4
Season 1
Season 3
Season 2

I'd have to concur on your season listing. Perhaps Season 1 and 4 neck-and-neck for me, because good lord I remember how addicted I was to Season 1 and how blown away I was. Season 3 definitely betters Season 2, which while good, was a let down with that 'British' chick and such...it was an interesting season, but in other respects it just didn't have the same pizazz.

Season 3 thankfully stepped things back up to normal arse kicking territory, and season 4 has just been bloody great. Every week I'm gagging for the next episode, and it constantly keeps me guessing, on the edge of my seat, and always interested.

I do hope Season 5 can pull something just as awesome out of it's hat.

Hmmm...I would not be able to rank season 4 until I see how they finish it up on Sunday. There has been A LOT of stuff that I noticed in season 4 that ...dont make sense, are contrived, not believable (even within the context of suspending disbelief) that I did not notice in the previous seasons.

As of right now, I rank..

1. Season 1
2. Season 2 (very close 2nd, I thought season 2 was really good)
3. Season 3

Season 4, remains to be seen....before the finale, I am thinking it would be ranked 3rd.

Trying to rank the seasons is making my head hurt. None of the seasons have left me lacking so I give them all an A and consider them on equal footing. I must admit, I have no fucking clue where any of this shit is going.

Judging by the preview for next week, I am guessing that Deb pieces together Dexter's past, and who his brother is before this season is up.

Dude, that would totally rule! Actually, funny thing - my wife and I had been talking about how Glover would have made a great Dexter when the show first came out.

Sometimes your excess of jadedness makes me face palm.

Of course Dexter is worth getting back into! Have you not read the praise in this thread?! Season 2 is the down season, but even then it's still good. Season 3 picks it right back up again and Season 4 has been pure brill.

WHOA....

Did the show just cop out or was it brilliant writing?

Anyone who watched the last episode of the season will understand this question.

axlish
14-Dec-2009, 11:13 AM
Definitely not a cop out.

I cannot imagine telling Julie that this is her last episode, and that it has been a great run. When you contrast the dialogue between Trinity and Dexter at the kill scene, with the results we get minutes later, it is a pretty chilling, and well written exchange.

There was an interview with Hall and Lithgow after the show. I think Lithgow put it best when he said "I don't envy the writers for next season."

Superb finale, it opens up so many possibilities for next season. The ending was one of many I'd imagined, but actually seeing it happen was pretty shocking.

Omfg, literally just finished watching the Dexter finale.

Holy shit!

Kinda harsh too. I really liked that he had this normal family thing going on, and she was kind of a sweet character. Doubly harsh as she had two kids, and their real father was a total fuck up, and now Dexter has their own child and the other two, and now his kid has been "born in blood" in the same way.

I can totally understand why the ending was the way it was, but aye - it's certainly shocking to see it. I'll have to revisit the final scenes for added context considering the outcome.

Also interesting that someone mentioned in the comments on that TV Guide article - will Benz return to join Harry in Dexter's conscience? I think that'd be quite cool - like the poster said, two sides of a conscience.

It'd also help 'ease in' the viewers to her being dead.

Bloody nora! Season 4 of Dexter is some of the best telly this decade, that's for damn sure!

I'm putting this one tied first with season 1 personally.

The final scene between Dex and Arthur is given even more creepy depth when you re-watch it, realizing Arthur is just relishing in the fate that was about to befall Dex.

I posted just that on IMDB... I called foreshadowing what was to come. When They talk family and Arthur justs miles at Dexter you knew something was up, but what a shocker that was at the end at whom it was... honestly wasn't expecting that I was expecting another member.

I don't really buy the "born in blood" theory that Dexter is going on about. Watching what appears to be your mother fall asleep is a lot different on the psyche than watching your mother get chainsawed to death while alive. I'm no Freud, but I doubt the kid would have any memory of that event in the slightest.

I'm guessing that the two older kids will live with their grandparents, as their connection to Dexter is not one of "blood".

I'll agree with Lithgow again, I don't envy the writers of season 5.

14-Dec-2009, 09:58 PM
That was one hell of an ending.

I knew that something was up when Lithgow
went to Dexters apt and found what he did,
but I didnt think they would go that far.

And I think they are definitely setting up
a story arc with Dexters sister.

All in all this is becoming one of the best shows on
TV, cuz now they have suceeded in making it so
the viewer has no idea how far they will go and things u
thought wouldnt happen just might.

Just a bit. Looking back though, they do need to shake it up. The last few series have been about Dexter adjusting to normal life. We can't have that can we? The situation with his sister throughs this all up in the air. Especially what she found out and how she will look at him with the way this series ended.

I dunno if she looks at him different because during their conversation outside Arthurs house she says she loves him and without him she wouldn't be the person she is today.

I don't think her knowing who Dexter's mom was would change the dynamic of their relationship in the least.

I agree DJ, their relationship will be stronger than ever. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if she moved in with him.

Now that I reflect on the finale, some things begin to worry me.

-You've got Deb in the know, and she is a fucking detective. She is going to wonder if Dex has any of the traits that his brother did.

-The fact that Trinity killed Rita will force Angel to think of Dex and Trin in the same thought. Then he will remember that HE SAW TRINITY TALKING TO DEXTER IN THE STATION!

-We haven't heard the last from Quinn either. I have no idea if he will be sympathetic and buddy up with Dex, or if he will turn up the heat.

-A part of me hopes that they skip a few months on the timeline before season 5 begins.

There will be suspicion around Dexter when you bear in mind how he was found when he was little and how the series ended. Deb knows.

Such a great finale, and testament to that fact is that we're all rabidly going on about it, and that it has been thoroughly stuck in my head since I saw it.

THIS IS A POSSIBILITY

BATISTA (ANGEL) WAS FACING TOWARDS DEXTER HE DIDN'T SEE TRINITY's FACE

QUINN WILL MOST LIKELY BE THE NEXT DOAKES

Christ! Didn't realise there were 8 seasons!!

Yup.

Season 5 is pretty good, but can't compare to the high point of Season 4.

Season 6 wasn't much cop. Season 7 improved things a bit, but you could tell it was running out of steam as a show. Season 8 finally finishes things off, but limps to the finish line somewhat.

So call it a day after Season 5?

Wellll.... it depends. You might want to give 6 through 8 a go to finish it off, see how it goes from your own perspective. I'm a completionist so I just kept going with it, but in hindsight season 4 was the peak. 6 through 8 were very mixed affairs quality wise - good stuff and bad stuff.

Well... Finished... And season 8 was a bit of a wet fish compared to what came before - And the finale? Not befitting the character and rest of the season IMHO :(

Yeah, it was downhill for me during seasons 6 through 8. For me at least, the show ran out of ideas and became increasingly silly in its plotting and characterisation, and the ending was a bit duff. There were some interesting things about those last few episodes, but it all got a bit bungled. The show seemed to generally descend in quality from a cutting edge drama (on Showtime, no less) to something of the slapdash quality of made-by-committee network TV shows (yet still on Showtime).

IMHO season 5 was the last solid season, with seasons 1 and particularly 4 being some of the very best TV drama I've ever watched.
