This is Betelguese. It's so massive that if you placed it in the center of our solar system it would extend to the orbit of Jupiter. A bunch of astronomers used interferometry to create this image, revealing two striking 'white spots'.

that pic of betelguese is one of my favs. the very first object outside of the solar system to be imaged as a disk.

betelguese is easily visible as part of the most famous constellation: orion. it forms the right shoulder of orion.

this is a pic of the alpha centauri system. it is our closest neighbor at about 4.5 light years. it is a triple star system - A and B orbit around a mutual center of gravity and proxima (the tiny dot that the arrow points to) orbits around them.

not only is alpha centauri our closest neighbor, it is of great interest because alpha centauri A & B are very much like our own sun. A is a big larger and brighter and B is a bit smaller and dimmer.
