It's bad enough to do a re-make... but even worse than re-makes are when they start re-re-making films. Damn, how sad has Hollywood gotten when they can't even do a re-make so they consign themselves to doing re-re-makes?

Oh yeah, and taking European films and re-doing them American style (which means subtracting all the entertaining story for unrealistic looking teenagers that all look like models from a GAP commercial, silly sex scenes, and over-the-top CGI gore that is just terrible).

Words just can't describe it...

This isn't really a re-remake. It's based off of the fourth film in the series, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Totally different film.

A single ape has the intelligence and leads an army to take over mankind. It's like a better version of Land of the Dead. :p

This sounds pretty cool actually, this is one of those franchises that shouldn't die, a new flick doesn't make the old ones worse and this is based of conquest so i think it might be cool to see.

In all honesty, during the theatrical run of the original APE series, we 70's kids would also have a primetime TV show .... and ... a Saturday Morning cartoon, both spinning the premise in different directions.

i've been a huge planet of the apes fan since i was a little kid. even though the tim burton version sucks all manner of goat balls, it didn't dim my desire to see more.

even though i'm very partial to the first flick, conquest is an awesome flick. bring on this film.

"Rise of the Apes" (http://www.joblo.com/the-apes-will-rise-again-planet-of-the-apes-prequel-date-set) - Coming June 24, 2011.

The prequel is set in San Francisco and will be a a cautionary tale in which "man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy".

It was finally decided that a prequel would be made. It was also decided that instead of having the usual costumed apes there would be CGI apes instead. Hmmm...

You can't call it a prequel to Planet of the Apes because the original series involved time travel - both directions - and the events of the series are a self-fulfilling cycle (which may or may not break off into a "happier" timeline at the end of Battle for the Planet of the Apes). There is no room for a prequel - the existing sequels are the prequels!

Exactly. I'm thinking that they're just using the word "prequel" to ease it onto people, but it will actually be the start of a new series. Basically starting at Escape/Conquest.

CGI apes, though? God I hope that doesn't happen. If they're starting at the beginning of the end, we won't be able to relate to CGI! The whole point of both Escape and Conquest is for the viewer to sympathise with the apes(Cornelious, Zira, Milo/Ceasar) rather than humans. You think that's going to work when they look like Alvin and the Chipmunks?

Really? I thought that was one of the few decent things about the film. That and the ape costume design. Otherwise it was wretched and I recall being quite, quite pissed after seeing it.

We don't need any more Monkey Business around here, thanks.

The original sequels were stupid, the remake was stupid, now a remake of a sequel...fuck that.

Now, if they wanted to do a legit remake (in other words, one that even halfassed resembles the original story) of the first one, and then STOP, that'd be okay with me.

Ricardo montablan and Roddy McDowell had great chemistry in that film.

It is also my fav after the first one.

"Ceasar!. This is not how it was to be!"

That exchange with McDonald to cap the film was among the greatest most profound end scenes to any film, imo.

Agreed. Me thinks i hve to give that series another propper viewing and intorduce the kids to it.

Conquest was a very powerful film and as in the old style had plenty of satire and political commentary about the times in which it was made. One has to atleast acknowledge that.

I took a very civil rightish message from it. I predict that nothing of the sort will be involved with this re-fake. It will cater to the popcorn audiences of today and any message contained therein will be much less overt than in the original.

You can basically just skip Beneath. When I recently purchased the entire series on BR I watched them all over the course of a week, but just kinda jumped around on Beneath. I've tried to like it, but they just fucked that sequel all up. Tried too hard to make the first film over again. Just skip straight to Escape and tell your kids that the "planet of the apes" blew up shortly after Taylor found the Statue of Liberty.

Phooey on them. Or some similar sentiment.

The first one was fine. Then "oh by the way" there's a whole bunch of other shit, with psychically-enhanced people and other pukeworthy items. Which lead directly into monkeys dying/oopswewantasequelso not dying (and going back in time to boot), which leads to more chicanery.

I don't like things like that. Not in ape movies, not in ANY movies. Which is probably why I'm not a fan of sequels in general.

Battle is the final sequel everyone always forgets about, because it was just kind of "okay" without being anything special.

You guys seen the new-ish edit of Conquest? It's even darker than the original. The ADR ending with the zoomed-in eyes is now replaced with the REAL uprising ending. More blood, more violence, and the mayor's life isn't spared at the end. Good stuff.

I still haven't seen the new edit of Battle, though. As mentioned before, that film is okay but feels like a made-for-tv flick. Hopefully this new edit improves on it...

"The silly one" as a description for Escape is perfect. You may not like the film, but you have to give them points for doing something original and bringing some originality back to the POTA series. The first half of that film is a romp, but then about three quarters of the way in it turns into a pretty dark tale of survival. Then of course you have the downer ending and it only makes it better. In several ways you could relate it to Dawn.

Then Conquest came along and brought the whole series full circle, but flipped the characters on their head. In that way you could relate it to Day....

Speaking of the Lawgiver.....there's a blu ray menu on EVERY disc of POTA where a CGI lawgiver tells you about the movie. It can be slightly amusing, but ugh....

Battle for the Planet of the Apes was alright too, it felt a bit cheap-and-nasty, but I enjoyed it. Beneath was crap, Escape was good and Conquest was my favourite of the whole series.

An explanation about this( for those who never saw the POTA documentary on AMC many years ago ) is typical studio politics. The first Ape movie was a rousing success, so let there be a sequel where we could only get Heston for a limited time so let we'll clone him and call his twin James Franciscus.

As the second film still makes decent money, the third film is green lighted, but with less money, but fortunately we get Roddy McDowell( absent from Beneath The POTAs ) and the script is still good(even without Rod Serling's sharp satire ) and low the public still can't get enough.

So we go on to the fourth and finally fifth movies, where ultimately the budget is no better than a made for TV film and several different cuts of Battle For POTAs appear on the small screen, after the original theatrical release.
Battle was good, restrictive in scope but good, and I enjoyed Paul Williams as Virgil, who reintroduced us to Prof Hasslein's (Eric Braeden )hypothesis Of Time with quiet humor. The sloppy edits, however, left alot of exposition on the cutting room floor.
