Hey, mighty zombie shooters!
If you dont mind i'd love to have an advice from you, your point of view on my question.
I'm planning on building a cottage in the village not far away from my homecity. I have big plans for it and in our dangerous times, i'm planning on making it abit like a fortress.:D
Actually i want to ask you what would you suggest, to make a cottage more safe and prepared (in our case for a zombie outbreak, who knows what will happen in 2012)?
My cottage will be:
- from bricks and concrete blocks
- it will me surrounded by a garden and a pretty massive and high brick fence.
- it will have 2 iron main doors, automatic iron shutters on windows.
- will have 2 regular floors and a 2.5 floor hight tower with medium sized windows in all directions.
- garage for 2 cars with automatic gate
- it will have an underground cellar with fridge -> tons of canned food, frozen vegetables, meat.
- i probably will dig my own well.
- power generators (some - where you have to push pedals to generate power).
- sattelite internet (will not go down so fast as the others).
- sattelite tv
- some headlights on the tower (to overlook the terrain if needed).
What else could you suggest?
I also can expect that a high threat will go from marauders, what could you suggest to defend a cottage from them? :annoyed:

I'm always one to try and be of service to a fellow survivor.
My cottage will be:
- from bricks and concrete blocks
Good start.
- it will me surrounded by a garden and a pretty massive and high brick fence.
Fence? Fence? Leave the fences for the outer perimeter and surround your castle with a moat and barbican.
- it will have 2 iron main doors, automatic iron shutters on windows.
A little nervous if these are 1st floor iron shutters large enough for man (or even child) size objects to get through.
- will have 2 regular floors and a 2.5 floor hight tower with medium sized windows in all directions.
Good. Good.
- garage for 2 cars with automatic gate
Don’t forget the subterranean gas reservoir/tank.
- it will have an underground cellar with fridge -> tons of canned food, frozen vegetables, meat.
Excellent. Don’t forget reasonable pallets of possible trade goods/commodities and toilet paper.
- i probably will dig my own well.
Probably??? You will if you want to be anything other than zombie-food. Potable water and the ability to have a well will be one of the key factors on where to build your home for the day after.
- power generators (some - where you have to push pedals to generate power).
And people said Gilligan’s Island was mindless entertainment.
- sattelite internet (will not go down so fast as the others).
Check!
- sattelite tv
Check!
- some headlights on the tower (to overlook the terrain if needed).
Never hurts to prepare—this must be your mantra!
What else could you suggest?
Adam needs an Eve. And in the classic post-apocalyptic survivalist mindset, redundancy would not look askance at a failsafe in the form of a blow up doll or synthetic woman.
I also can expect that a high threat will go from marauders, what could you suggest to defend a cottage from them?
Pet dragon or mounted hippogriff patrols.
Also, don’t forget your hockey mask and loudspeaker!

How could i forget, i'll probably get mine today.
Castle master must look impressive :)
Don’t forget the subterranean gas reservoir/tank.
And this one is helpfull, thanks!
and toilet paper.
Maaan, i suck at preparing for zombie invasion...would you mind being my personal "get prepared" manager? :D

go for solar power. it has lots of advantages over most other power systems - like the sun itself being your power source, no refueling. extra power can be stored in batteries.
i'd say that a horse or two would be more useful than a car in a post disaster/apoc world. aside from the obvious problem of feeding it (you'd have the same problem with a car in finding a supply of gas), a horse can go lots of places a car can't and can outrun any group of zombies, shamblers or otherwise.

 awesome idea. i would lean more towards a baelnorn guard but that's just me.

Actually thats a brilliant idea about solar power. Will definetly use it, thank you very much.
And a horse is a good idea too, but horses dont live forever, so i'll probably could go for a car and a horse.
That idea is probably not very realistic, but what would you say about an underground passage outside of a house perimeter?

you mean like an escape passage? that would be a nice touch. depending on the ground around where you plan to build that could be a real bitch to dig though.

There are no trees on the surrounding terrain, its on a field, so i guess its a good idea.
And how would you suggest to pest off the marauders?
I think that nothing could stop the living from climbing over the fence and attacking the house. Even if i would barricade up inside, bad guys could blow up the door or the wall, so the only way to overcome this i can think of is to always keep a watchman and fight the marauders.

Satellite Internet- because it is less likely to go down first.
Wrong
Satellite Internet is based or connected to every other type of isp. For example Wild Blue was using AT&T for a connection. I have had 2 different forms of satellite internet and both were total crap! I would look into getting a T1.
Unless you just like the dishes? I would also just consider a very tall tv tower and try to pick up OTA broadcast. It could also double as a radio tower for info.

To tell the truth, I wrote this half-seriously.
