Pot legalization measure headed to California ballot, advocates say
Posted: March 24th, 2010 03:11 PM ET

(CNN) – California voters will be able to decide this fall whether their state will be the first in the nation to legalize the possession of marijuana for nonmedicinal uses, advocates claimed Wednesday, saying they have the needed signatures for a ballot initiative.

The proposed ballot initiative legalizing adults' possession of up to one ounce of marijuana has collected almost 700,000 signatures, according to a statement from the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington-based organization.

Roughly 434,000 signatures are required to place an initiative on statewide ballot in California this year, the statement said. State election officials are expected to validate the signatures Wednesday, it said.

City and county governments would be allowed to imposed a sales tax under the proposed statute. They also would be allowed to establish local ordinances relating to distribution.

California first enacted a law allowing for the medicinal use of marijuana in 1996, according Marijuana Policy Project spokesman Steve Fox. Fourteen states now allow medical marijuana, he said.

I've been waiting for this to happen. I speculate that we're not far off from a weed-legal country.

However, if this happened nation-wide I bet you what would happen would be the government allowing citizens to purchase gov't-grown herb, however citizens would still not be able to grow/sell weed on their own.

-and the stoners will be qeued up, blood shot eyed and cheeto fingered and rearing to vote.

-the day after the ballot.

if it gets in?, they'll pay the government and not there dealers. i predict no actual life ramifications from this. People who already smoke it will keep smokin' it. people who dont wont.

Hell, the government could tax the shit out of it and maybe get something out of the recession.

As much as I doubt it....I really hope you're right. I quit smoking years ago, but sometimes I wish it were legal so I could go back to it.:D

I think you can grow your own tobacco for personal use. If you're dealing massive quantities on it, they'd probably like to know so the IRS can tax the shit out of you.

-sigh-

Y'know, as much as I am all for this, I don't see it happening. Sure, California is 'weed central' for the US, and sure, they've legalized it for medical use on a state level (while still being raided by the goddamn feds) and since the current administration is completely against it, I don't see it happening.

That, and the government will have to retract all of it's outright LIES about marijuana that they've been propagating for decades.

Has anyone noticed the media slipping in lots of propaganda in their recent news stories & articles to sway the vote AGAINST this? It's popping up all over the place if you read carefully now that this is on the ballot. "A man was arrested today for robbing a bank. They found three handguns, one shotgun and 10 grams of marijuana in his getaway car." or "Today, three people were injured when a tree fell on top of them in the woods - while all three survived, one of the injured was found to have a small amount of marijuana on him and was arrested shortly after being released from the hospital" What the hell does one have to do with the other? Nothing, but they sure like to work in the fact that marijuana was found so they can "make the public aware of how dangerous is it" What a load of horseshit.

Excuse the language, but it's sad and fucking pathetic they stoop to this level, but it is not the least bit surprising.

Even if it passes on a state level, it really doesn't mean anything - the feds will still keep raiding homes, businesses that support & sell it, and they will continue to throw people in jail who are no more criminals than people who drink alcohol or smoke cigars & cigarettes.:mad::mad:

That'll become the new destination for the worlds stoners then! I heard the dutch are moving towards banning it as they are getting sick of ferry loads of English weed/booze tourists causing havoc in Amsterdam. Having been there myself I can see their point, all these weirdos absolutely mashed out of their brains on weed & mushrooms gabbling incoherently in the streets & generally acting like cheb ends, especially on a night around the red light district! The group I went with were bad enough, one of them completely lost the plot in a massive paranoia attack (it was mushrooms as well as skunk) & me being the only one not off my face had to try & calm him down which took hours

I love smoking a bowl every now and then, but this is the last thing I think California probably needs, more do-nothings and people who think they have the right to be 24/7 chemically retarded burdens on the state.

Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm open to thoughtful discussion to the contrary, but I think the social implications would be horrendous.

I don't know... think about it: everyone in CA is already smoking weed, so legalizing it isn't going to make the number of smokers skyrocket.

They're already all chemically retarded over there!

aye, im thinking the same. the 3 people i know who smoke weed, and i mean smoke it till they arent giggly or anything retarded, but now have a mental functional capacity that in the 1950's would be medically dubbed as "slow" and there reaction would probably be a blink. then another blink. then " Coo' " and they will not go mental and smoke themselves autisitc or something but just continue as they always have done, because- to badly paraphrase jurassic parks dr. ian malcome "stoners find a way, regardless"

And let it be known, that from this day forward all cross-country roadtrips have a definite final destination.

I hear Switzerland not too far from legalizing it either. From what I understand it's already pretty legal in Canada?

Hell....it's pretty much legal there already anyway. I've read stories about it being extremely easy to get the medical marijuana card. Certain doctors you can go to and say "I have anxiety"(or whatever) and they say "here's your card". That easy.:stunned:

Which it would actually be funny if someone claimed anxiety and wanted pot. I've seen some people that smoke and their anxiety goes through the roof. Paranoia is a bitch...

Paranoia is the by product of shitty weed. I have smoked great herb and felt relaxed and smoked some garbage that had me thinking ninjas were crawling up the lawn to fucking kill me.

You mean you saw them too !?! :hyper:

One thing:

It not being legal = not regulated. I'm sure there are any number of harmful foriegn substances in there just as I'm sure there was in alcohol during prohibition.

Perhaps that will change with gov't oversight.
