View Full Version : What became of Dead Reckoning?

I recently took a trip to the west coast for the first time and stopped at the universal studios theme park. As those of you have been know, during the tram tour there is a part where you see different vehicles used in different movies ( Time machine delorean, lost world RV, Fast and furious cars ect..). I had almost forgotten that land was made by Universal and was waiting to see Kaufman's truck sitting next to Doc Browns car. Sadly it was absent. I was just wondering what ever became of the truck? Was it just disassembled? Or is it sitting in GAR garage and only driven on the weekends?

It's getting overhauled for the sequel to 'Land of the Dead'.

There....you heard it here first!

Actually Land was only distributed by Universal. The majority of the money was from private investors/other production companies. hence why there are so many names listed in the opening credits

Atmosphere Pictures MM
Ranger Kim
Romero-Grunwald
Wild Bunch
Exception

Universal put up the last $3,000,000 for the march and april 05 re-shoots when they needed to keep shooting because of running out of money back in 2004.

"let your children experience the magic of ET, the thrills of Back to the Future and the absolute terror of a world overrun by flesh eating zombies..."

This just a wild stab in the dark, but I'm guessing Universal don't see the zombie apocalypse as a family-friendly theme park entertainment experience!

Actually not true. in 2004 during the weekend of Horrors the built a DAWN 2004 set in Fla and LA parks

In the final scene we see DR driving away toward Canada. It ran out of gas about a half mile up the road and is still sitting there. The entire production crew was too cheap to spring for the gas.

They may find the zombies to be a bit much for a family park, but when I was a kid the King Kong, Jaws, and even the Ghostbusters show scared me...

As for Dead Reckoning....I'm guessing it probably doesn't exist any more. Something that big that didn't travel very well would've been a pain in the ass to hang on to. It's probably in thousands of pieces.

I wouldn't be so sure there, Bass.

They've been using and reusing the Landmasters (from that 70's version of Damnation Alley) for years.

The Dead Reckoning is probably in an auto museum or private collection. That would be my bet, anyhow.

Yeah...it's possible that someone out there has it, but I think it's most likely gone. Romero mentions in the commentary that they had trouble keeping it running and it was a pain to move around. And I could be wrong, but I believe there's some mention of "where is it now?" and they say it's probably destroyed...

On a semi-related subject....I was reading this morning that the three sharks used in Jaws were thrown onto the Universal backlot after filming and left to rot. But then someone supposedly found one in a car junk yard in the middle of the country. They took the creator of the original sharks to investigate and he confirmed it. Somehow an unused 4th shark was found in a junk yard...far away from any studios or where they filmed.

Honestly, it really bugs me that the final disposition of DR is not something GAR knows immediately. I mean, the first 3 films are horror film cult legend. How could anyone not realize the value in preserving DR? Or the potential value as a collector's item. It's probably destroyed? Wow. That's just wrong.

If I made Land I'd do my best to get out of it with as much of the set stuff as possible. Heck, I'd have DR in my garage and take it out on the weekends to drive around my neighborhood.

Or keep it handy for when the real zombies come. :shifty:

This is land your talking about... Dead reckoning along with every other setpeice, prop and actor should be crushed, burnt, destroyed then buried and never spoke of again.

I'm actually gobsmacked you were expecting to see dead reckoning on show next to doc browns delorean.. Seriously I slapped my forehead, that's like asking why you can't see puke stained worm infested turds on show next to a rare giant diamond.

You're suggesting that they crush, burn, destroy, and bury the actors for having been in Land? Wow. Even I don't dislike Land that much.

And even with my dislike of Land overall, I gotta admit, DR was cool!!

I feel that frustration as well.

It's not only that it's not a very good film, imo, it's that it failed to live up to it's potential and that's the most maddening thing of all.

After all these years GAr finally got backig from a major studion and that's the turd he churned out.

Utterly depressing. :(

Yeah, I have to say, my dislike of Land stems in part from knowing what it could have been. And, no, that does not mean I expected another Dawn. What I expected was to see the claustrophobic, scary, nightmare world of the first 3 movies taken to the next level. More survivors, more zombies, more struggle to survive. Humanity's do or die moment.

What I got was less of all those things, goofy plot, contrived message, and some weirdo zombie evolution theme. Off the screen I got my favorite director and franchise in decline and no hope of another studio backed blockbuster.

I'm not saying to discard the message. Just make it work in the story and make it a good reflection of the times. For example, take the fireworks. It added to the story. It added to what we know about zombies without contradicting previous zombie behavior. It really, really worked as a commentary on society. People being distracted by flashing lights and explosions so much that they miss what's happening all around them. That whole thing just worked. Why don't we see more of that?

Overall it was decent enough 2 watch and buy the DVD...and the fact that they had got Dennis Hopper (R.I.P.) thats was a bonus! For me the lead zombie should have not been there plus the fact they acted like humans that sucked! i dont want my zombies smart! lol especially when they penetrate the city and a zombie guns down that soldier on the ground instead of eating him....BULLSHIT! ;):skull::moon:

Smart zombies= Not scary period.

The ghouls are supposed to be like the terminator. Here's kyle Reese's quote:

"It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead."

That's what the ghouls are supposed to be. When they're making decisions on if they feel like eating you or to go find a place to settle down, those are not the ghouls that I fell in love with as a kid and that's the stop where I get off. :dead:

Actually I like the idea of that - maybe a zombie themed burger bar, have it made up to look like it's been ransacked, have the people serving dressed up to look like zombies and have food shaped to resemble body parts... :D

Yes. Yes I am, whoever decided to back romero with this project down at universal should be sacked aswell, any right minded person would of taken one look at that script, thought what the hell and phoned the saniturium to go for george.

Although I do agree that any idiot should've known that script was bad. Mind you, not as bad as 9/10 of the other zombie movies out there, but bad.

I know one of the sharks was at the Universal Park in Orlando back in November of '99.
I was in Orlando for a tradeshow and went to Universal before I left and they had one sitting kinda off to the side where they had a bunch of old rusted out military vehicles used in the old WWII movies of the 50's, 60's, 70's.
I actually got a guy to take a picture of me standing next to Jaws, but don't have it scanned on my computer. I should do that as it was a pretty big thrill for me, being the Jaws fan I am.
Also the best "Theme Park Ride" I've ever been on was the Jaws boat ride at Universal. I thought it was pretty cool. That's followed closely by the one they have/had concerning the movie "Twister." Pretty damn realistic if you ask me. I'm sure there's better now as special effects technology has come a long way in the last 10/11 years.
Too bad they didn't do something similar for "Land Of The Dead." :)

The most recent Jaws shark that was found was the one they had hanging by the tail in the CA studio tour section for tourists to take their photos with. They had it there for years. I remember seeing it back in the late 1970s on the tour.

It was molded from an original Bruce from the Jaws but wasn't used in the film. Only on the backlot for tourist photos.

Hello to all!

New here. Got here by coincidence, but thought you might like to know what I found.

I was watching a show called The weapond hunter. The flamethrower episode. While the host was visiting a weapon collectionner in the north of Toronto ON, I notice that behing them was a special semi truck that had to be armored real or fake.

So I began searching the web and found out that the truck looks a lot like the one you are looking for. Sorry, I have no frame pics from the show. It it is like in the first 10 min of the show.

Hope this help you guys in your quest. Hope it is the truck.

In case this thread is of interest to anyone, I thought I'd reply with an answer as to: what became of the Dead Reckoning.

Lucky j is correct.
The Dead Reckoning was shown in the background of the Weapons Hunter TV episode.
I have been in possession of the truck since we wrapped filming the movie LotD.

OK. I will start with the burning question.
... what life did the "Dead Reckoning" lead before becoming the quintessential armored zombie exterminating machine?

I was fortunate to be peripherally involved in the selection process.
A couple of offerings were made but ultimately this vehicle was chosen.
We walked outside the studio to view / discuss the rig and I took this pic. - see below
This is likely the only 'before' photo of DR prior to the transformation.

It is a 1992 Freightliner cab-over and a flatbed platform 40 ft trailer. pic taken Sept 9, 2004
The graphics on the tractor indicate that the it had been working in the film business already.

Thanks for the "before" pic - wow! A lot of work had to be done to turn it into DR! With a project like that - creating Dead Reckoning - what kind of things need to be taken into account/considered when choosing a vehicle and how to construct what will be seen on screen?
